Orie Lee Jennings was the eldest son of Melton Lamar and Mamie Carrie (Ferguson) Jennings. His name at birth was Travis Orie Lee, but he went simply by Orie Lee his entire life and even signed his name that way. His mother passed away just 17 days after the birth of his brother, Cecil, when Orie Lee was barely more than a year old. He married Ethel Ontee Johnson on March 27, 1942 in Yazoo County, Mississippi, 39 days after registering for the military draft. He enlisted in the US Army on September 23, 1942 at Camp Shelby, MS. His son, Travis Lamar Jennings, was born January 7, 1943.

Orie Lee served in Company C of the 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion and saw action in North Africa and Sicily. He was one of 483 American and British soldiers and sailors killed when the ship he was aboard, LST-422, struck a mine and sank off the coast of Anzio on January 26, 1944.

Orie Lee's name is inscribed as Orie L Jennings on the chapel wall of the Sicily - Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in Nettuno, Italy along with 3,094 other names of those who were Missing in Action or were lost or buried at sea. Inscribed above the altar in the chapel is the following: "Here are recorded the names of Americans who gave their lives in the service of their country and who sleep in unknown graves."

General Notes: Husband - George Neverson Davidson Hydrick

BIRTH: No birth certificate ever found. Birth date listed on Social Security application, (April 9, 1937), and death certificate (13 May 1990) as 19 January, 1900. Birth date listed on military records (Parris Island July 6, 1919) as 19 January 1899.

OCCUPATION: Aviation Electrical Inspector.

SOCIAL SECURITY APPLICATION: April 9, 1937. Living at 1711 Airline Drive, Houston, Texas. Social Security# (on file)

PARENTS: On a Social Security Application, which George Neverson Hydrick filled out 4/9/1937, he listed his father as Charles C. Hydrick (deceased), and mother as Emma Butterfras (deceased). This is very confusing. While living, George always told his family that his father was Andrew Jackson "Jack" Hydrick, and his mother was Emma Butterfras Hydrick. Because of dates regarding the birth of George Neverson Hydrick, being 1899, or 1900, Andrew Jackson Hydrick was supposedly married to Belle Flint at this time, marrying Florence Patillo in June 1900, and Emma Butterfras in July 1901. (See notes of George's father, Andrew Jackson Hydrick.)

BTW: This is the first and only time I have found a Charles C. Hydrick listed as father of George. I am not sure where this came from, or who Charles C. Hydrick is? I have found records showing Andrew Jackson Hydrick to be married to Emma Butterfras, and Emma Butterfras was certainly the woman who raised George Hydrick.

MILITARY: Service Number 153498, July 11, 1919, Houston, Texas. Another Service Number 277446, November 17, 1939, Portsmouth, Virginia. Military Records requested by Jeanette Jackson (George's daughter) under the number of 153498 show that George Neverson Hydrick became a Private in the Marine Corps on July 11, 1919. Copies of his Service-Record Book were sent to Christi Hydrick at the request of Jeanette Hydrick Jackson, who sent them to Ora Smith, who holds those copies in file. As stated above, in these documents his birthdate is listed multiple times as January 19, 1899, and being born in Houston, Texas. He enlisted in the Marines for a term of 4 years. Embarked on USS Kittery at Charleston, S.C., Sept. 25, 1919. Sailed same date for foreign tropical shore service in Cuba. Arrived and disembarked at Nerwita (?) Cuba, Sept. 29, 1919 (signed Major Turner). Embarked on board USS Henderson at Guananamo Bay, Cuba, March 1, 1921, sailed same date, arrived at Hampton Roads, Virginia, March 1921, disembarked March 21 (?), 1921 (signed Capt. Maurice Holmes). Extra and Special Duty Details - Corral 11/16/19-2/29/20; Radio Mechanic 3/1/20-3/27/20; Orderly 4/1/20-5/10/20; Messman 12/31/20-1/20/21; Labor 5/21/21-11/12/21.

Feb. 24, 1931, Application for Certificate in Lieu of Discharge...showing George applying for a certificate in lieu of lost or destroyed discharge certificate, and request that it be sent to him at the following address (left blank). Lists his birthdate as 19 Jan 1899, with a personal description of his appearance. Goes on to state that he was discharged 31 December 1921 at the Marine Barracks, Navy Yard in Washington D.C.. His discharge certificate was lost or destroyed on or about December 12, 1930 under the following conditions - Misplaced or lost to Civil Service Commission.

March 1, 1935, An Honorable Discharge letter by special order of the Major General Commandant for his (George's) own convenience, December 31, 1921, at Washington, D.C., a Private, with character "excellent". (signed L. D. Hermle, Major, Asst. Adjutant and Inspector, U. S. Marine Corps.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: In military records - eyes gray; hair light brown; complexion ruddy; height 68 inches; weight 140 lbs.; mean circumference 34"; expansion 4"; vision in right eye 20-20; vision in left eye 20-20; indelible or permanent marks upon his person S.Vac. S. 3/4" R. dorsum, S. 1/2" D. R. lower leg, S. 3/4" R. Lumbar R.M. 1/2" D. Scapular, S. 1/2" D. Left dorsum. (picture was included in military records).

OBITUARY: George Neverson Hydrick, 90, of Anaheim, a retired quality-control electrical inspector, died Sunday of natural causes. Memorial services 11 a.m. Thursday at Pierce Brothers Daly-Bartel-Spencer Mortuary, Anaheim. Private burial. Survived by his wife, Alice; sons; George, of El Cajon, Owen, of Imperial Beach, Plympton, of Lake Tahoe, Donald, of Henderson, Nev., William, of San Diego, Paul, of Huntington Beach, and Laurence, of San Diego; daughters, Lucille Evans of Kamiah, Idaho, and Jeanette Jackson of Modesto; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren.
   ~~~(Name of newspaper not recorded on copy this was typed from)
(NOTE: born in Jan, passed in May, so had he been born in 1899, he would have been 91 instead of the printed "90" in obituary -DMH)
supposedly buried in an old, unknown-location cemetary just west of Levesque, AR that contained about 100 graves of the earliest settlers of Cross County
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wright Tyer took great interest in his children and taught them to read, write, and spell and how to solve any ordinary problem in arithmetic. His children all wrote spendid hands, as shown by a copy book still kept by their descendants. They made their pens from goose quills. The old machine used for making the pens is still preserved and makes a fair pen. They have an arithmetic made with pen and ink, still in the family.

Several Indians lived in the country at the time but no trouble between the whites and Indians. Tyer also taught the children to keep a record of their family history, and it is due to this fact that I am able to give half the facts written in this history. They have a family record that gives the birth of Wright Tyer in Dec.3, 1784, he was married to Elizabeth Filligan, and died in 1831, Thomas Tyer in 1805, and the births, marriages and deaths of all the Tyers down to the present. They have an old family Bible published in 1756 at Edinburg, Scotland, in which the letter F is used in every place where S is now used. He also taught them to love their church and association, and to preserve all important records of the same.

At the time Wright Tyer came to Arkansas, it was part of Missouri Territory. It was formed into Arkansas Territory in 1819. Most of the Indians left in 1828. Wright Tyer died Jan.8,1831. He did not live to see the fruits of his labor on his children. For fourteen years, he labored and waited but no messenger came to preach the Gospel of Peace. During all this time, if he ever heard a sermon we have no record of it, but he taught his children to trust in Christ for Salvation, and when a preacher did come, he found the children believers and ready for Baptism.

Per son Conrad ("Beau"), his dad left Alabama at age 16 to work as roughneck in Texas oil fields. He rode the rails like a hobo to reach oil fields around Baytown and Goose Creek. He worked on building the Humble Oil Company's Baytown Refinery. He became a constable and fire chief at Goose Creek. Moved to Ingleside to work on Humble's refinery there. In 1929 he sent for Joise who was teaching school in Alabama to join him and get married.

Walter was very active in the CIO labor union, serving as president of the local union. He was president in 1945 when a strike was called at Ingleside. Humble closed the refinery. The family then moved to Corpus Christi (about 25 miles away) where Walter opened a trucking business which folded after a year. Walter then moved to Columbus, MS where he operated a grocery and produce business.

Per letter to me from Conrad L. Hydrick dated August 17, 1993, he is a pharmacist and artist/sculptor in Corpus Christi, TX. His father, Walter N. Hydrick came to Texas as a hobo riding the rails just after World War I. Made his way to oil fields working as rough neck, became town constable / fire chief of Goose Greek, TX. Began work for Humble Oil and sent for his wife in 1929.

Conrad repeated the above story in greater detail in a November 28,1995 letter. in 1949 Conrad moved from Columbus, MS (where the family had moved after a 1945 labor strike at the Ingleside Humble Oil refinery) back to Texas. He attended college at the University of Texas at Austin culminating in a BS in Pharmacy in 1957. He returned to Corpus Christi after graduating and has lived in the area ever since.
