~~~~~~~~~~~~
VICTORIA - On June 13, 2015, at the age of 101, the world lost a true Renaissance Woman, Genevieve Sturgis Goodpasture. She was born on October 14, 1913, to Benjamin and Ammie Evandice Sturgis in El Paso, Texas, and was reared in Houston, Texas.
There she met and married the love of her life, Burl Erwin Goodpasture, and there was born their only child, Charlotte. They moved to Corpus Christi where as an ardent music lover she taught piano. After moving to Victoria in the early 1960s, she followed her love of music to join the Victoria Music Club where she served as president for two terms. In 1974, she joined the Victoria Symphony as a founding board member, followed by membership in the Victoria Symphony Guild. She joined the Bronte Club in 1967 where she served as president for two terms, and currently held Emeritus Membership. Genevieve was an active member of the Victoria County Historical Society. As an accredited genealogist, she taught genealogy research at University of Houston at Victoria. She was immersed in countless community endeavors and gave graciously of her time, energy, and talents. In 1995, she was elected South Texas Woman of the Year, and was photographed with then Governor George W. Bush.
Genevieve loved to swim, travel, cook and entertain and always served her guests stylishly and elegantly in the manner of Emily Post. She exuded kindness, love and generosity to all who knew her. Many fondly referred to her as Mama G, Aunt G, and GG.
Following a long bout with Alzheimer's, Genevieve leaves us to celebrate her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Burl Erwin Goodpasture, her daughter, Charlotte Hydrick, and her sister, Madeline Butler.
A celebration of Genevieve Goodpasture's life will be held Monday, July, 6, 2015, at Grace Presbyterian Church in Victoria, at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be private.
Genevieve, as stated in her obituary, was an accredited genealogist. Thru several communications (before email and texting), she collaborated with "Aunt" Odessa Hydrick on her book, "Old Big Grandma and Her Hydrick Family". ~DMH
She married Conrad Lynell Hydrick ("Beau") on 24 December 1956 in Travis County, Texas, USA.
On April 27, 2012, this earth lost a beautiful blue-eyed angel, when Charlotte Goodpasture Hydrick, 76, joined the heavenly host. Charlotte was born in Houston, Texas in 1935, and reared in Corpus Christi, Texas.
She courageously fought the effects of a massive stroke suffered in 2008. In her earth stay, she was loving, caring, sincere, thoughtful and patient. Charlotte was a lady in every sense of the word. She dedicated her life to her church, family, school and friends. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Portland, Texas, she was a Stephen's minister, Sunday school teacher and director of the children's Sunday school.
She was a 1958 graduate of The University of Texas in Austin, with a B.S. in elementary education. It was at UT, where she met pharmacy student Beau Hydrick, who became her husband of 55 years. The couple moved to Corpus Christi, Texas and later relocated to nearby Portland, Texas, where the couple resided for 42 years. Per letter to me from Conrad L. Hydrick dated August 17, 1993, he is a pharmacist and artist/sculptor in Corpus Christi, TX. His father, Walter N. Hydrick came to Texas as a hobo riding the rails just after World War I. Made his way to oil fields working as rough neck, became town constable / fire chief of Goose Greek, TX. Began work for Humble Oil and sent for his wife in 1929.
Conrad repeated the above story in greater detail in a November 28,1995 letter. in 1949 Conrad moved from Columbus, MS (where the family had moved after a 1945 labor strike at the Ingleside Humble Oil refinery) back to Texas. He attended college at the University of Texas at Austin culminating in a BS in Pharmacy in 1957. He returned to Corpus Christi after graduating and has lived in the area ever since. Portland in about 10 miles away.
(NOTE: Referenced letter was not sent to me;
also, his address is on file ~DMH)
On April 27, 2012, this earth lost a beautiful blue-eyed angel, when Charlotte Goodpasture Hydrick, 76, joined the heavenly host. Charlotte was born in Houston, Texas in 1935, and reared in Corpus Christi, Texas.
She courageously fought the effects of a massive stroke suffered in 2008. In her earth stay, she was loving, caring, sincere, thoughtful and patient. Charlotte was a lady in every sense of the word. She dedicated her life to her church, family, school and friends. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Portland, Texas, she was a Stephen's minister, Sunday school teacher and director of the children's Sunday school.
Navy Cross Citation
AWARDED FOR ACTIONS
DURING World War II
Service: Navy
Rank: Captain
Division: U.S.S. Newcomb (DD-586)
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander Amphibious Forces Pacific Fleet: Serial 1945 (April 13, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Captain [then Commander] Ira Ellis McMillian (NSN: 0-63149), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. NEWCOMB (DD-586), Flagship of the Screen Commander in Task Force FIFTY-FOUR (TF-54), during action against enemy Japanese forces in support of our amphibious operations at Okinawa, on 6 April 1945. With his destroyer subjected to a series of suicide attacks by seven enemy planes, Captain McMillian conducted skilled evasive maneuvers and coolly directed his guns against the plunging aircraft, blasting three of them out of the sky as the other four crashed at intervals into the gallant NEWCOMB. Instantly organizing fire fighting and repair parties to quell the flames raging in the spaces from the bridge aft to Number 3 gun and to control the flooding, violent internal explosions and extensive damage in many vital parts of the ship, Captain McMillian fought off continuing attacks by hostile planes and directed his men in utilizing every means of saving the stouthearted destroyer. When one attacking plane was on a course headed directly for the bridge structure, he unhesitatingly manned the helm and, initiating a radical maneuver, succeeded in avoiding the enemy aircraft. With the assistance of two destroyers ranging alongside his vessel, Captain McMillian led his crew in extinguishing all fires and in effecting emergency repairs, enabling the NEWCOMB to be towed to port. Maintaining a high standard of fighting efficiency throughout the long and terrific attack, Captain McMillian, by his fearless leadership and courage in the face of grave personal danger, contributed to the destruction of three Japanese planes and to the preservation of his severely damaged destroyer. His heroic conduct and unwavering devotion to duty were inspiring to the NEWCOMB's Officers and men and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
