The below information is found on [both] Samuel and Harriett's Find A Grave pages. I have taken the liberty to both re-format for easier reading and assimilated some of Harriett's data onto Samuel's (birth and death dates). At the very bottom, I've included more of Harriett's data from FAG. I would have set up a separate record for her on this database but do not know her maiden surname and do not like using "Unknown" if possible. ~DMH

Their youngest was born in 1866, but dad was also missing by the 1866 state of Mississippi census. He's not on the 1870 federal census. The 1870 census wasn't that refined yet. It does not ask if Harriett is married or widowed at all. In his wife's 1875 newspaper obit, though, he is listed by name as having widowed her already.]

*Seven HARPER SIBLINGS were all BORN in Mississippi, but NOT all on the same farm or county.
First sibs LIZZIE [1848-9] & WILLIAM [1850] were born right at the first full family federal census [1850] listed by county & state only - Simpson Co, Mississippi, which is where their parents Samuel Sr & Harriett had just wed, so those two babies birthplace there is clear.
Sixth of seven siblings, MARY was also born on a census year [1860]. So, again, her birthplace is clear as marked on that count sheet: (farm outside town) "nearest post office Brandon," Rankin County, Mississippi. It's the kids born when we don't know on which farm in MISSISSIPPI the HARPER FAMILY resided -- DeWITT [1852], LAURA [1854], SAMUEL [1857] & HENRY [1866] -- we're left to guess until (if) we find more documents. Because they moved away & back again: 1850 census - Simpson County 1860 census - (farm outside) nearest post office (town) Brandon, Rankin County 1870 census - (farm outside) nearest post office (town) Westville, Simpson County

**Here are exerpts from Harriett's FAG page:
Born more likely in 1832, this grave record uses 1829 because of the newspaper's estimate of her age as 46 upon her Oct-1875 death. She was actually probably 43. Four or no less than three years younger than her late husband, Samuel born about 1828.

Obituary in The Weekly Mississippi Pilot, printed, about 40 miles northwest as the crow flies, in the state capital of Jackson, Mississippi on Saturday, 16-October-1875 records Harriett as: "DIED: At Westville, on Oct. 7, 1875, Mrs. Harriet Harper, widow of the late Samuel Harper aged 46 years."

Harriett née L(something) Harper & her family lived on their farm in a rural area of Simpson County, Mississippi, listed simply as section "Beat 3" on 1850, 1860, 1870 US Census, with the nearest post office (which used to be listed on the census) in the town of Westville (now defunct, a ghost town). Before 1850, federal census only named adult land owning men. Under him, families were counted by age groups, genders, and White, and/or subset age and gender counts of Black persons enslaved by the Head of Household. The 1850 federal census is significant for Harriet(t) because it records for history's sake of her existence as wife and mother in 1850 and 1860, then widow in 1870 with two more of her seven children that we know of, who were born after the 1860 count, before her own death, thankfully recorded in the newspaper. Because other major life documents like her own birth and death certificates, her marriage, or birth certificates of their children, have not been found. This is what we know from those three federal US census & an 1866 Mississippi state census, as well as found graves of some of her children:

*Lee? Loflin? Laird? or something else completely; Lee was used to name a grandson which could be honor of grandma's maiden name, but could just as importantly have been in honor of Gen Robert E Lee, which was popular; Loflin & Laird are local surnames beginning w L that make them a possibility for Harriett's maiden name as well. We may never know. Harriett as a girl did not have the worth to be listed by her own name before she was already a married woman in 1850. We only know she was born in Mississippi and middle initial L as a married woman indicated a maiden name.

Harriett & Sam Sr's son Houston & his wife Ginnie had at least six children 1879-1900, five sons and one daughter, that include using family names Samuel & Harriett. Their son called Lee could indicate Houston's mother's "L" maiden name could indeed have been "Lee." However, the baby may have been named in honor of Col Robert E Lee, just as another of their son's was given the honorific Thomas Jefferson Harper.

3/22/2026: More information from his Find A Grave page... Information provided below by previous Findagrave Manager (Unknown) and a great-great granddaughter who contributed to the biographical information after years of research and gathering documentation. I am the manager of George-Siddy memorials.

They are my 3rd Great Grandparents on Donie Elizabeth Harper-Lane 's side. The candle has now passed down to me 29 July 2025.

George Poindexter Harper was born on the 9th of July in 1833 in Pike County, Mississippi to Parents : Jesse Harper and Sarah Allston Bacot of Pike County. ( No graves found as of 2025 ). There is no evidence to prove he was born in Simpson County and his supposed father, Jesse Harper, lived in nearby Pike County as stated in U.S. censuses and the document mentioned in the next paragraph.

George was named after his father's friend and lawyer, George Poindexter, a prominent and controversial official in MS. and U.S. government. Proof that Jesse Harper knew Mr. Poindexter and held him in high esteem is Doc. No. 467 of the 23rd Congress of the MS. 1st Session of the House of Reperesentatives, found on the website Gov info.gov. I am George's great-great granddaughter through his son, Taylor Harper and have done extensive research on him. I have been researching my family history for over 40 years.

He Married Sidney Elizabeth "Siddy" Jones on 15th May 1850 in Copiah Co, Mississippi. They had 8 children according to the 1870 and 1880 U.S. censuses of Simpson Co, MS. Occupation was farming. He was also a civic leader and a Mason as shown on his grave monument.

General Notes: Husband - John Daniel Bagwell

Buried in Sweet Baptist Church Cemetery. From a paper filed in the"Bagwell" folder at the Gwinnett Historical Society by Jewel Davis Nelson of Boaz, AL comes the following:

John Daniel, son of Daniel and Elizabeth Bagwell was soldier in the Revolutionary War, fighting with Carter's Company. Some of his children were: Kitty, Warren, Larkin, Redmon, Polly, and James William Bagwell. In 1853, the Bagwell family migrated to Gwinnett County, GA. Nancy Bagwell came with her children, grandchildren Mattie and Dool, her father-in-law John Daniel Bagwell, his old maid daughter, Aunt Kitty, and four of his grandchildren whose father was Warren Bagwell, James William's brother, who had died and has remarried and moved to Georgia leaving the rearing of the four children to their elderly grandfather and old maid aunt.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Old John D. insisted on riding his pony instead of a carriage on the move to Georgia; he was 92 years old. Nancy rode in a wagon with her household goods; some of the heavier goods were shipped separately. She kept this old mare hidden during the Civil War for fear that the Yankees would steal her. When crossing the Savanah River on a ferry, the cows got frightened and jumped overboard, but they swam to the Georgia side anyway.
Another paper in the Bagwell folder (author unknown) reads:
I am John Daniel Bagwell and I was born in the Halifax district of the Colony of North Carolina in 1761. My father, who had been born in Ireland, had come to the American colonies with no love for the English, and this was instilled in my brothers and myself when we were small children. Our response was to enlist when the War for American Independence began.
I was 17 when I was first called in the service of the fight against the British and I was living in Butte County of North Carolina Colony which is now Warren County. I was drafted into the war twice and enlisted once.
I served 4 or 5 months in 1778, three months in 1780, and 18 months in 1781 and 1782. All the time I served I was a private. When the war ended I was never furloughed or discharged; we just went home and began our lives anew.
I was married to my first wife in 1782 when I was 20. We had four sons before my first wife died. Here I was in my twenties with four children under age six. Fortunately my wife's younger sister, Rachel Chamblee, consented to come to help me with the children.
At that time in North Carolina there lived some persons who loved to gossip. I don't know if you have this type of folks today or not. It seems that my kind sister-in-law was the source of lots of gossip for her living in a house with a man she was not married to. On January 27,1791, I married my sister, Miss Rachel Chamblee, and we eventually became the parents of thirteen more children.
In 1800 the census taker found my family in the Pendleton District, SC near Greenville, 1830 found us in the Spartanburg District, and 1840 found us in Anderson County. Once we moved to SC we stayed in the same place, but the district and county lines moved all around us. I became a prosperous farmer with a large plantation over 2,500 acres which was needed for the support of such a large family. When my second wife died, I was in better circumstances than I was the first time I lost a wife. My daughter Clara was unmarried and helped me to raise the younger children; the older children had married and moved away. Two of my sons had moved to Gwinnett County. GA.
In 1842, my son Warren died and his wife married another man who did not want Warren's children so they came to live with me. My granddaughter Barbara lost her husband at about the same time and she and her two young daughters moved in with her father James William. Before long, James William was also dead and his widow, their children including Barbara and her two children all came to live with me as I was the only adult male in the family. When I became 90 years old, I determined that the only way my family could surive was for us to leave our home of many pleasant years and move to Gwinnett County to be near male relatives who could take care of the widows and orphans now in my charge.
The move to Gwinnett in 1853 was an eventful one. All of our furniture, farm tools, and other possessions was loaded into wagons and carts. The cattle and other animals were herded, and I rode a horse all the way to oversee the move. When we reached the Savannah River, we were barged across but the cattle feared the boat and leapt overboard. Fortunately they swam to the Georgia side of the river where they were herded into a group and behaved for the remainder of the trip.
I lived in Gwinnett for two years before my death in 1855. I am buried in Sweetwater Cemetery on Pleasant Road and my grave was marked by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1934. One of my grandsons and his son were both Gwinnett County School Superintendents and a great-grandson, Judge Robinson, once lived in the big white house with columns around the corner from us. Hiram N. Rainey was the husband of one of my granddaughters and he co-founded the Perry-Rainey College in AUburn where many of my descendants were educated. Many of my descendants still make Gwinnett their home.
John Daniel was the son of Daniel Bagwell and Elizabeth Johnson. He did three tours of service during the Revolutionary War. He married Rachel Chamblee (1771-1837) on Jan 27, 1791 in North Carolina and they had many children. He moved to Georgia after 1850. Rachel was his second wife.
His grave marker reads "Beloved Father, farewell. He was just and upright in all his ways." In 1860 census was in Gwinnett County, GA listed as a farmer. By 1891, family had moved to Talladega County, AL where he purchased 40 acres (NW 1/4 Section, Township 17, Range 6) from Jennifer Iron Company. Sold land February 5, 1897 to John WIlson for $237.75 (Talladega County Record Book Volume VV, Page 555). William had received $200 from the death of his aunt Sarah Bagwell in February 1888. Was this money used to purchase the land? On February 16, 1901, William purchased a 39.97 acre farm in Morgan County (Certificate #6819, NW 1/4 of NW 1/4 of Township 8 South, Range 2 West).
General Notes: Husband - Jonathan Gay Crowder
Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Jonathan Jay Crowder, 88, of Auburn died Tuesday, July 20, 2010.
His first wife, Margaret Hodge Crowder; his parents, Joseph Jacob and Grace Gay Crowder of Wadley; and his brother, Robert Gay Crowder, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Bailey Crowder; daughters Paula Crowder Alford and husband Bill, Marsha Gay Crowder and husband Paul Wooten, all of Tampa, Fla., Jim and Melissa Lineberger of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Leigh and Douglas Sallas of Jacksonville, Fla. He was blessed with four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Jay was born in Valley on Jan. 28, 1922. He attended Columbus, Ga., schools until his family moved to Wadley. He graduated from Wadley High School at age 16 and attended Southern Union College until his senatorial appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., class of 1944.
After graduation he joined the battleship Massachusetts in the Pacific theater. During World War II, he attended flight training earning the 'Gold Wings' of a Naval Aviator. His flying career led him to heavy attack, as well as air-to-air missile research and development. He was a pioneer in photoreconnaissance and mapping. As commander of the VCP-61 on Guam, his mission included flying the first A3D jet across the Pacific Ocean and updating maps of Vietnam, New Zealand and China. He continued his career becoming executive officer of the aircraft carrier Oriskany. After being promoted to captain, he became the commander of the Naval Photographic Center in Washington, D.C., where one of his duties was to oversee the official photography of the White House and Lyndon B. Johnson Library. He had the opportunity to meet presidents, their families, astronauts, and other dignitaries.
After leaving Washington, he became the commander of the Naval Support Activity in New Orleans, where he became a leader in the community. Not only was he awarded the 'Keys to the City of New Orleans,' but also in recognition of service to the city, Crowder Boulevard was named in his honor. Capt. Crowder's medals include the Meritorious Service Medal (which was awarded for his service to the White House), World War II Victory Medal, American Service (one Star), American Defense, Korean Service, Asia and Pacific theater (four stars), Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign, National Defense (one star), Naval Aviator Insignia and Command at Sea Insignia.
After retirement Jay and his wife Margaret traveled for a year before returning to Wadley, their hometown, where Jay served as mayor.
He found great enjoyment in remodeling and restoring old homes. One home in Lafayette was placed on the Historic Registry of Homes.
After moving to Auburn, he found time to earn his master's degree and began work toward his Ph.D. at Auburn University. He enjoyed bridge, tennis, golf, gardening and painting at different times in his life.
Always curious, he traveled the world interested in all modes of transportation from planes, trains, and mopeds to aircraft carriers. Jay was a dedicated Rotarian and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He had perfect attendance until his illness. The Auburn Chamber of Commerce honored him with a great tribute, the Eagle Award. He was asked by Mayor Bill Ham to gather a committee to raise funds to build the Veterans Memorial on the corner of Ross and Glenn Avenues. After many mayor's breakfasts and selling memorial bricks, the Veterans Memorial became a source of pride for all veterans and all of Auburn.
Capt. Crowder was a member of Auburn United Methodist Church, Saugahatchee Country Club, Military Officers Association of America, The Men's Camellia Club and the Georgia-Alabama Men's Golf Association, all of which he enjoyed to the utmost. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Academy and the Auburn University Alumni Associations.
A celebration of his life will be at 9 a.m. Friday, July 23, at Auburn United Methodist Church with 8:30 a.m. visitation in Hamil Court. Interment will be at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery at 1 p.m.
Pallbearers are Dan Christiansen, William Dillard, Jack Johnson, George Kenan, James Lineberger III, William Neville and Richard Phelan. Honorary pallbearers are the Auburn Rotary Club.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gideon was in the Civil War---Co. A 50th ALA Inf Confederate Private.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Overview of 50th AL Inf:
50th Infantry Regiment was organized in Corinth, Mississippi, in March, 1862, by consolidating the 2nd and 5th (Golladay's) Alabama Infantry Battalions which were recently recruited. Originally mustered into Confederate service as the 26th (Coltart's) Regiment, its designation was changed to 50th in June, 1863.
The men were raised in the counties of Calhoun, Jackson, Lauderdale, Blount, Limestone, Walker, Fayette, and Tuscaloosa. Ordered to Tennessee the unit fought at Shiloh, saw light action in Kentucky, then was placed in Deas', G.D. Johnston's and Brantley's Brigade, Army of Tennessee, and was active in North Carolina. At Shiloh the regiment had 440 effectives, but because of casualties, sickness,and exhaustion, the number was less than 150 by the second day. It lost 4 killed and 76 wounded at Murfreesboro, 16 killed and 81 wounded at Chickamauga, and totalled 289 men and 180 arms in December, 1863. The unit sustained 33 casualties in the Battle of Atlanta and was badly cut up at Franklin. Few surrendered in April, 1865. Its commanders were Colonel John C. Coltart, Lieutenant Colonels G.W. Arnold and William D. Cradick, and Majors T.H. Gilbert and John C. Hutto.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jim Lindsey, gr.grandson, lists his birthdate as 1/27/1824
His grandson John E. Hydrick gives his name as Gideon Elson born 17 Sep 1827
~~~~~~~~~~~~
G. E. Hydrick left Orangburg, South Carolina heading towards Alabama. He met Mary Elizabeth Stubbs along the way. They were married in her hometown of Calhoun, Alabama.
The Register indexed the name as G. E. Hardwick married to Mary E. Stubbs. However, when G.E. signed his name on his license it was G. E. Hydrick. See sources.
By 1860 they moved to Radsfordsville, Perry, Alabama. G. E. was an overseer for a farm. As new lands were opening up in Alabama, he moved and bought his own farm in North Port, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They are both buried at Paynes Chapel in Millport, Alabama .
(PERSONAL NOTE: Penna is another of the ladies who is deep into the Hydrick genealogy research. She doesn't claim it, but I consider her our "DNA Guru". She tries to explain it to me but my brain seems to reject anything containing "DNA"!! She has been a tremendous help to our research.) -DMH
email from Penna 6/30/2021:
Hi Denny. Hope all is well.
The Hydrick origins came back as Russia, Sweden, England, Spain, Ireland, Barbados and Argentina. Typing from memory so I hope I didn't forget any.
The Hydrick line originated from the area around the Black Sea. Family Tree DNA group Armenians was matched to us. I joined but the admin is Russian so we had difficulty communicating. Lol
I know this is difficult to believe. I had quite a surprise myself.
The Gittens (and there are various spellings in the U.S.) are the Barbados match. Our closest match through the origins.
I can't help but think that Mary Polly was the Hydrick.
Our land in Arkansas where present day Hydrick, Arkansas is located begins with a Choctaw Land Script.
A Choctaw widow with 3 children...sound familiar? I thought so. Her name is Ha To Na. I found her listed in the treaty, I believe through Google Books.
My father told me back in the 70s that our line has Choctaw, Chickasaw and Cherokee. I've always kept that in mind.
I downloaded my raw DNA from Ancestry and uploaded to My Heritage (free) and noticed a change in ethnicity. My Heritage is associated with Family Tree DNA.
But they have a world map on there that's shaded where you match someone. This has been very helpful. I've noticed some very strange areas shadowed that was before Europeans were there. I suggest you do it.
My father also told me about my mother's line and the Native American blood. I can confirm through my mitochondrial DNA (full sequence) that it's true.
I've discovered that an ancestor's family was stolen by the Cherokees in early Tennessee at Fort Gillespie. It was this ancestor, Thomas Glass, known as 'The Glass' signed the Treaty giving the last of the Cherokee's land in Tennessee to the United States. It took months of research to discover this. In the first generation of the Glass line outside of the control of the Cherokee's, was a son born given the name of a president. I think about George Washington Hydrick and how this may be a similar situation. The year corresponds when Hydrick land was cleared from the Choctaws.
See land documents through BLM. Here's the link:
There were Gittens that were Choctaw sent to Oklahoma.
Their name has some far-fetched spellings but they were in Mississippi and Arkansas. Extremely hard to find them. Also Tennessee and North Carolina with ties to South Carolina.
That's about where I'm at in research.
I do have World Ancestry so I'm able to search records overseas.
PS....the Johann Peter Heydrick lines have a group on Family Tree DNA. We do not match. They used an alternative spelling of Hedrick. I confirmed this through paperwork when he first arrived in Philadelphia.
Per Ancestry.com for Edmond M.. Baker, he had a daughter named Edwina Marion Baker who is shown as wife of William Francis Robinson. Her FAG record lists her as Elizabeth Marie Baker. It's possible she changed her name (maybe not legally-perhaps a nickname?) to Elizabeth. On her marriage record and the 1930 census, she is Marie; but on the birth certificate (attached) of her daughter, she is Edwin Marian Baker. ~DMH
