Marriage Events

1. Marriage Fact: They were legally step-siblings.

Children

General Notes: Wife - Barbara Jennings

From Patsy Robertson-
Quote from page 138 of the "Springhill Cemetery Archives " book compiled by Patsy Robertson, "Wife of Dan (Daniel W.) McAdams who was a son of Obediah McAdams. She was the daughter of Thomas J Jennings and Mary Cobb Jennings. Barbara's husband, Dan, was legally her step-brother, but they didn't meet until they were grown. Dan was 8 days old when his mother died & he was reared by relatives in Mississippi. Dan's daddy, Obediah F McAdams, married Barbara Jennings' mother, Mary S Cobb Jennings. Barbara's daddy, Thomas J Jennings, was in the Confederate Army and died of pneumonia on December 13, 1862. Barbara's husband, Dan, (per McCadama Family book compiled by William Henry McAdams) states "Dan was buried along the road in Arkansas where he died while returning to Alabama from Texas by covered wagon. Barbara continued on to Alabama where she lived for the rest of her life." Barbara & Dan's children were Hilliard "Hix", Mary McAdams (Coleman) and Ida McAdams (Moore). All Barbara's children are buried in Springhill Cm. Per Ancestry.com: D. W. McAdams married Barbara Jennings July 22, 1883 in Lamar County by Justice of Peace, W B Atkins. She was a half sister to Samuel B McAdams (Row O22 Plot 14). See comments on Samuel B McAdams, Mary McAdams Coleman and Ida McAdams Moore. The 1900 census shows Barbara McAdams (head, b. Aug. 1850), Hilliard (son, b. Mar. 1885), Ida (dau. b. Oct. 1890) and Mary (dau. b. Mar. 1893).

Is listed on the Company Muster Rolls of Company G, 2nd Regiment of Arkansas Infantry as a Private. He was enlisted June 10, 1861 by Lt. Col. J. W. Bocage for the duration of the war at Helena, AR. The first roll showed him traveling 290 miles to "place of rendezvous" (probably Camp Hardee).

The second roll shows him sick at Camp Hardee during the period June 10 to August 31, 1861.

The third muster roll is for the period April 30 through June 30, 1862 shows him present and entitled to bounty. He was paid by Capt. Bradford. [Where was unit from 9/1/1861 - 4/30/1862?] He was paid by Capt. Bridewell.

Fourth roll shows him present and paid by Major Landis through June 30, 1862. Fifth, sixth and seventh roll shows him present and paid by Capt Haley through February 28, 1963. Eighth, ninth, and tenth rolls show him present and paid by Capt. Sullivan through August 31, 1863. Other roll listed a Capt. Bridewell and show Private Patton was absent on furlough February 10, 1864 [Was he ill? Did he return home?]. He was present on the roll ending April 30, 1864 but had been paid only through October 31, 1863.

The last muster roll is August 31, 1864. He was present but paid only through February 29, 1864.

Audrey Jennings Jones remembers hearing her grandfather James Carol Patton talk about the Civil War. He was in the Battles of Shiloh, Chattanooga, and Chickamanga. She could say these place names before she could walk. After war was over, he walked back to Bradley County, AR only to find that his parents, brother and sister had moved to Corinth, MS while he was away. It took him six months to return to his family after the war.

Food during the War was so scarce. One Sunday he and some of his friends saw some hogs across a creek. They swam the creek, ran down a hog, killed, skinned and ate it. He did not get a scratch during the War, but had not been home long when he was "fooling" aroung with a gun and shot himself in the heel.

Per Pherby Hayes (who was told by her sister Vera), James Carol was a heavy drinker

Far-removed relationship to Dennis Morgan Hydrick: brother's (Mike) wife's (Deborah) granduncle's wife's 1st cousin once removed *

Orie Lee Jennings was the eldest son of Melton Lamar and Mamie Carrie (Ferguson) Jennings. His name at birth was Travis Orie Lee, but he went simply by Orie Lee his entire life and even signed his name that way. His mother passed away just 17 days after the birth of his brother, Cecil, when Orie Lee was barely more than a year old. He married Ethel Ontee Johnson on March 27, 1942 in Yazoo County, Mississippi, 39 days after registering for the military draft. He enlisted in the US Army on September 23, 1942 at Camp Shelby, MS. His son, Travis Lamar Jennings, was born January 7, 1943.

Orie Lee served in Company C of the 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion and saw action in North Africa and Sicily. He was one of 483 American and British soldiers and sailors killed when the ship he was aboard, LST-422, struck a mine and sank off the coast of Anzio on January 26, 1944.

Orie Lee's name is inscribed as Orie L Jennings on the chapel wall of the Sicily - Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in Nettuno, Italy along with 3,094 other names of those who were Missing in Action or were lost or buried at sea. Inscribed above the altar in the chapel is the following: "Here are recorded the names of Americans who gave their lives in the service of their country and who sleep in unknown graves."

Johack Lyjnch came to Carolina and received a Land Grant of 600 acres, as ordered by the council, 30 April 1677. In May, 1679, a further grant was made of "one hundred acres of land marked and builded on by the said Lynch allready..." His name is spelled Jona and Jonah in early records. Other land transactions are shown in the records of the colony. The name of his first wife is not given but family records show that his second wife, Margaret Johnson, was the mother of his children.

If he (Nathaniel) was born in 1634, then he would have been 16 which is more probable; however if Lady Anne was born in 1638, then she was 12 which is possible, I suppose, but not very probable. Colonial Politician. Member of Parliament for Newcastle upon Tyne from 1680 until 1689. Governor of the Leeward Island (including St. Kitts, Montserrat and Antigua) in 1686. Appointed Governor of Carolina Province (later South Carolina) in 1702. He served in this capacity until 1709. During his tenure, he created the South Carolina parish system under which South Carolina was governed until it was abolished in 1865. He also directed the Apalachee expedition to Northern Florida in 1704 to "strike a blow" at Spanish interests in the New World. He introduced silk production for export at his plantation, "Silk Hope" and although this effort failed, he was one of the first plantation owners to cultivate rice, the crop that became synonymous with South Carolina.

(NOTE): Find A Grave lists his birth as 1644 which would have made him 6 years old when daughter, Margaret, was born. The plaque denoting his Silk Hope Plantation site also shows birth year as 1644. I suspect that Margaret's birthyear is wrong as he and Lady Anne didn't marry until 1670. Family Search shows his birthyear as 1634 ~~~DMH)

When Nathaniel Johnson left the Leeward Islands (where he had been governor) to move to South Carolina, his wife set out with her children to visit family in England. On the voyage they were captured by a French privateer. Mrs. Johnson was imprisoned for almost a year before she died in captivity. It is very improbable that she is buried at Silk Hope.

Proprietary Governor and Royal Governor of South Carolina. Robert Johnson earned a place in American history by being the Province of South Carolina's last Proprietary governor and the second appointed by the Crown. He was the son of Proprietary Governor Sir Nathaniel Johnson, who was Governor of Carolina from 1703 to 1709. The Carolinas were known as the Province of Carolina during America's early colonial period, from 1663 to 1712.

As the younger Johnson, he was first appointed Proprietary Governor of South Carolina in April of 1717. He came to South Carolina at a time when many coastal cities were being terrorized by pirates, including Charleston. One of his first official acts was to appoint William Rhett as commander of a naval force and order Rhett to locate the "gentleman pirate" Stede Bonnet, who was inhabiting, along with the notorious Blackbeard, along the coastline of North Carolina and South Carolina. Eventually, Rhett captured Bonnet and his crew near the outer banks of North Carolina, and after bringing them back to Charleston, the pirate and his crew were hung at high tide with their bodies dumped into the river.

When he was a child, Johnson's mother had been killed by pirates.

A bloody, rebellious uprising grew between the "Lord Proprietors" and Johnson with him being caught between them and the assembly. The assembly asked Johnson to take over the colony in the name of the king, disregarding the will of the proprietors and report directly to the king. He refused the assembly's plea because he already held the title through the proprietors. As a result, he was forced from office on December 21, 1719. The position was offered to James Moore Jr. who accepted it until Francis Nicholson was made the first royal governor, serving from 1721 to 1725. At that point, Arthur Middleton became acting governor until December 15, 1730.

Johnson returned to England to lobby for reinstatement as governor. Upon the passage of the act of Parliament accepting and confirming the abolition of the Proprietors' charter, and the final assumption by King George II of the immediate government of the province, Robert Johnson was again chosen as the second governor appointed by the king, serving December 15, 1730 to May 3, 1735. This was satisfying to Johnson because he refused to betray the interests of the Proprietors by whom he had been initially appointed. He had lost his office as Proprietary Governor of the province, which the people, recognizing his high character and remembering his bravery in their defense from the pirates were extremely satisfied with his selection as Royal Governor, and until his death, he was referred to as "the good Governor Robert Johnson".

His grandson was South Carolina Senator Ralph Izard. A close friend of General James Oglethorpe of Georgia, Johnson Square in Savannah was named in his honor.

 ~~~FindAGrave.com
(NOTE): Find A Grave lists his birth as 1644 which would have made him 6 years old when daughter, Margaret, was born. The plaque denoting his Silk Hope Plantation site also shows birth year as 1644. I suspect that Margaret's birthyear is wrong as he and Lady Anne didn't marry until 1670. Family Search shows his birthyear as 1634 ~~~DMH)
When Sir Nathaniel Johnson was born in 1634, in Durham, England, United Kingdom, his father, William Johnson, was 24 and his mother, Margaret Sherwood, was 14. He married Lady Joanna Anne Overton on 7 March 1670, in Little Casterton, Rutland, England. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 8 daughters. In 1702, his occupation is listed as governor of carolina in Carolina, British Colonial America. He died on 1 July 1712, in Berkeley, South Carolina, British Colonial America, at the age of 78, and was buried in Perquimans, Carolina, British Colonial America.
