General Notes: Child - John Franklin KELSO

John Franklin Kelso was born in 1822 in Maury County, Tennessee, his father, Joseph Garrison Kelso, was 38 and his mother, Anna Rose Collins Kelso, was 31.

He married Henrietta Etheridge 1828-1871 and their children are James Joseph Kelso 1850-1928, Ophelia D. Kelso 1852 - 1932, Alice Collins Kelso 1855 - 1896, Martha Lenora (Mattie) Kelso 1857 - 1937, Richard Hill (Dick) Kelso 1860 - 1929, Annie A. Kelso 1863 - 1910, John Franklin Kelso 1866 - 1888, and Margaret (Maggie) C. Kelso 1871 - 1920.

Henrietta Etheridge Kelso died in 1871 and he married the Widow Margueritte A. Simmons Thompson 1843-1927. He died on November 1, 1877 in Haywood County, Tennessee, at the age of 55, and was buried in Hillville, Tennessee.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Moved to Haywood County from Maury County at age eleven with a deed filed in his name (Haywood County, Deed Book R, Page 91, Land Grant #307, October 18, 1833). He was a farmer and owned adjoining his brother William Stephen Kelso whose daughter Annie Sydney Kelso's 1881 diary recorded a complete description of the life of these two families.
The Harmony Baptist Church gave John and Henrietta a "church letter" (Church Minute Book I) in October 1860 and reinstated it in 1866. On the same day in 1866, the Etheridge and Powell families were given letters too. According to Virginia Naylor Smith, these families were in Texas during the missing six year period. This would buttress my assumption that the "Bomont" mentioned in Henrietta's letter is actually Beaumont,Texas.
John's service in Texas during the Civil War has no official record. However, his second wife's pension application (#6252) was rejected until Margaret Etheridge Powell (Henriett's sister) gave testimony of John's service in the same company with her husband. His grandson, John F. Kelso, tells of his grandfather being a spy and carrying a money belt full of gold, buying cotton and hiding it in a ditch from the Yankees.
General Notes: Child - MAJ George Washington KELSO
George had one half sister Nancy and two half brothers Charles and James M., five brothers Milton Garrison, Oliver H. William Joseph Martin Hydrick, age 71, of St. Simons Island, Georgia, passed away Thursday, June 24, 2021 at Southeast Georgia Health Systems Brunswick Campus.
W.J. as he was affectionately known was born and raised as a young boy in Aiken, South Carolina, later moving to Atlanta. Upon completion of high school, W.J. enlisted in the United States Army and fought in the Vietnam War. W.J. was honored in his service to include National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, 2 Overseas Bars, and Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar M-14, just to name a few of his remarkable honors. Upon his Honorable Discharge, W.J. started his career at his family business in Atlanta.
W.J. was a man of deep faith in his Lord with an undying love for his family. Life was a celebration and his life was one well lived. With his many worldly possessions he always held tight to his family and his faith, always putting this first. He appreciated the simple things in everyday life…his love for fishing, golf, morning coffee and grits while bird watching on his porch, and being in nature as he and his wife, LIBBY, loved to camp! They loved their life together, always with their dog Lucie, whether riding their horses, boating, playing golf, and living the "beach life". Leaving their Atlanta home they moved to be closer to family in Charleston for many years; then onto Florida to soak in the warm weather, enjoy their close friends, and lots of golf. Then later, they moved to St. Simons Island to once again be closer to family. His grandchildren called him both, Papa and Professor Pops while his wife loved to call him, ROOSTER. W.J. was a dearly devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who was Proud and Happy with his life.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Conner Hydrick of St. Simons Island; his daughter, Kelly Hydrick and her children, Malachi and Scarlett, all of Atlanta; his sons and daughters-in-law, Marshall and Jane Beckham and their children, Liz and Ben, all of St. Simons Island also Matt and Jenny Beckham and their children, Conner and Taylor, all of Charleston, SC; and his sister-in-law, Cathy McIntire and her husband, Steve of Signal Mountain, Tennessee; also W.J.'s beloved dog, Lucie.
Family and friends are invited to meet at Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, TN on Tuesday, June 29th at 12:00 pm. The procession will leave the funeral home at 12:30 for the funeral service with full military honors at Chattanooga National Cemetery, 1200 Bailey Avenue, Chattanooga, TN. The Reverend Ann Brightwell McCord will officiate. Immediately following the ceremony, all are invited to the home of Cathy and Steve McIntire, 2208 Fairmount Road West, Signal Mountain, TN for refreshments and fellowship.
Molly and Milton married in Alabama or Mississippi. They moved from around Reform, Alabama during the depression. Their family moved to Cross Lake outside of Shreveport, LA. They ran a boat landing and fishing store. Milton R. built all the boats they rented at their dock. They raised their kids in a house on the lake. As a child, J. Milton Harper remembers rowing people out to go bass fishing and receiving 25 cents. Molly loved fishing and would wear overalls all the time. Milton R. worked as a bus driver when his kids where in school. He quit when his kids were no longer in school. He also work as a tool maker for a glass factory (Libeo and Ford Glass?) .
Memories of Pete Hydrick (son of Ed Hydrick) as told to his wife Joyce 4-15-2015
Letter to Cheryl Haynie
Clara Mae married Rufus Brown. After his death, she married William Bartholomew. She would come to Alabama for a couple of weeks to visit during the summer. Pete's mother said, while she was staying at Vardy's, she would walk down to their house for just a "haf-a-cup" of coffee and she'd drink the whole pot. Ed's farm was right next to Vardy's (Uncle Carlos Hydrick).
Given in a letter to Cheryl Haynie on 4-15-2015 (from Joyce Hydrick)
Joyce Hydrick is the wife of Pete and daughter in law to Ed Hydrick.
I had the privilege of knowing Aunt Clara when I was living at home while Pete was stationed in Germany. Loved talking with her. I was visiting with her on Aunt Mabel's front porch one afternoon after work. Aunt Clara explained how her son's divorce from his ex-wife was scriptural. "The Bible says what God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. Well, God didn't join them. The devil did." So that is my Aunt Clara story. Haaa Ha.
