As a young man he was an avid basketball player, an award-winning pole vaulter, and he led his chapter of Future Farmers of America to a state championship in parliamentary procedure. He attended Harding College and Arkansas State College, receiving a BS degree in Agriculture specializing in engineering. He also completed two years of graduate work at the University of Arkansas before returning to Beedeville to farm with his family.

A self-employed farmer, he farmed alongside his brothers for 35 years. A duck hunter for years, Madden also raised and trained Labrador retrievers. Madden enjoyed going to auction sales and restoring old cars and farm equipment.

Active in county government and civic affairs, Madden served as a Justice of the Peace and member of the Jackson Country Quorum Court for 21 years, chairing the Budget Committee for the last four years. He was Jackson County's representative on the Association of Arkansas Counties and Quorum Courts, a 75-member governing body, for which he served his last three terms on the 12-member executive board. As a Justice of the Peace, he officiated at 49 weddings. Madden was also a member of the North Central Arkansas District Council for Riceland Foods.

Madden was a member of the Beedeville Church of Christ, where he served as an elder. Much of the energy and passion of his life in recent years was focused on his work at the local prisons, where he touched many lives. Earlier this year, as he was drafting notes for his 50th high school class reunion, Madden said that his most rewarding experience was serving as a volunteer at both prisons in Newport and working with the prison ministries, where he helped to baptize 159 women and 18 men. As he said, "I can tell some good stories about changed lives." Madden worked diligently as chairman of the board seeking to build a chapel at the McPherson women's prison, which has raised over $100,000 toward the chapel construction.

Earlier this year he retired from farming, hoping, as he said, that he could enjoy his grandchildren more. Madden's favorite Bible verse was Joshua 24:15, "Choose you this day whom ye will serve; . . . but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

He was preceded in death by his father, Roy E. Madden on June 3, 1987; his mother, Lola Iris (McFadden) Madden on March 18, 1984; four brothers, Ralph E. Madden on Jan. 11, 2002, Dale Madden, Sr. on March 6, 2000, Joe E. Madden, Sr. on Sept. 29, 1995, and Harold Alton Madden, Sr. on Nov. 29, 1968; two sisters, Etta Reid on Sept. 5, 1990 and Royslen Madden on June 24, 1934; one nephew, Roy Thomas on Sept 24, 1992; and one niece, Cherri Jean Madden King on Sept. 27, 2002.

Mr. Madden is survived by his wife of 49 years, Eileen (Lowery) Madden of Remmel; his children, Ed Madden of Columbia, SC, and Jeff and Raeann Hayes Madden of Jonesboro; three grandchildren, Dillon Madden, Kyle Madden, and Keely Eileen Madden of Jonesboro; three brothers, Stanley Madden, Kenneth Madden, and
Hervey Madden, all of Beedeville; and one sister, Elaine Thomas, also of Beedeville.

Interment was in Walker Cemetery in Cow Lake Community, Jackson County, AR.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were: Steve Reid; Harold Madden, Jr.; Mike Reid; Mitch Reid; Joe Madden, Jr.; Tony Madden; John Paul Madden; Kenneth Madden, Jr.; John Kevin Madden; Keith Madden; Danny Thomas, Jr.; Dale Madden, Jr.; and Mac Madden.

Honorary pallbearers included: elders and deacons from the Beedeville Church of Christ, Larry Dabbs, Wayne Foushee, Bart Gaskin, and Jim Peacock; members of the Jackson County Quorum Court; and Chad O'Dell, Jim Eskew, Ronnie Nance, Joey Rennicke, Alvin "Curly" Cheshier, Bob Penix, Alvin Mullins, and Jim Reynolds.

was he really 12 y.o. when marrying Ruby?

General Notes: Wife - Ruby Margaret Ryles

Almost 100% positive Ryles was her maiden name. She married Allen T. Lucas first and they had a son, Charles Thomas Lucas. The Marriage License article in the Indian Citizen newspaper of Atoka, OK dated Thursday, March 19, 1925 stated "Allen Lucas, 12, Stringtown and Miss Ruby Ryles, 18, Stringtown". Don't know if Allen's age (12) was accurate or a misprint. Later records, i.e. Charles Thomas' draft card and his FindAGrave page, lists his mom as Ruby Margaret Crawford.

After finding all three on FindAGrave with proper birthdates, I think both ages on the Marriage License article were incorrect. -DMH

Lynch History Hopsewee Plantation was originally part of the lands owned by Thomas Lynch, I (deceased 1738). He owned most of the property on the North Santee from Hopsewee to the intercoastal waterway, with seven plantations in production. Hopsewee was built by the Lynch family between 1733 and 1740. This beautiful site was chosen of all the Lynch property for the family home of Thomas Lynch, Sr. (1726-1776) Hopsewee overlooks the beautiful Santee River and the rice ?elds which were its source of income until the Civil War. Lynch was married to Elizabeth Allston, of Brookgreen Plantation, another prominent Georgetown family, and they had two daughters Sabina (b. 1747) and Esther (b. 1748) and one son, Thomas Lynch, Jr. (b. 1749)

After Elizabeth Allston died (c. 1755), Mr. Lynch married. Hannah Motte, and they had a daughter, Elizabeth (b. 1755). The Senior Lynch was a distinguished public servant and one of the most important Santee River planters. As a prominent Indigo planter, he was the ?rst President of the Winyah Indigo Society founded in 1755. In 1751 he was the delegate elected to the Commons House of Assembly from Prince George, Winyah Parish where he served with the exception of one term until his death. He served on the 1765 Stamp Act Congress and in 1774 was elected to the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia. Lynch was highly esteemed by the founding fathers and in October, 1775, Lynch was appointed with Benjamin Franklin, and Colonel Benjamin Harrison as advisors to General Washington. However, in February 1776 he was paralyzed when he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while in Philadelphia. His son, Thomas Lynch, Jr, was serving in the South Carolina militia and requested leave of his commanding of?cer, Christopher Gadsden, to join his ailing father. The request was denied but the South Carolina Second Provincial Congress selected the son as a delegate to join his father in Philadelphia. Thus Thomas Lynch Sr. and Thomas Lynch Jr. were the only father and son team to serve the Continental Congress. Thomas Lynch Jr. was the ?fty-second signer of the Declaration of Independence at 26 years of age and thus gave his birthplace, Hopsewee Plantation, a place in American History.

The elder Lynch remained a member of the South Carolina delegation but was physically unable to sign the Declaration of Independence in the space left between the names of Edward Rutledge and Thomas Heyward, Jr. In December, 1776, while returning to South Carolina, the senior Lynch died and is buried in Annapolis, Maryland.

Thomas Lynch, Jr. returned to South Carolina and retired from public life due to a malingering fever contracted during his service with the South Carolina militia in 1775. He and his wife, Elizabeth Shubrick, resided at Peachtree Plantation on the South Santee River. In 1779 he and his wife left for France by way of the West Indies to improve his health. Their ship was lost at sea with all passengers. He and his wife had no children.

U.S. Continental Congressman. As a planter, he was very successful in the management of extensive rice plantations, on the Santee River. Entering politics, he served as a member of the South Carolina House of Assembly, (1751-57, 61-63, 65, 68, 72). He also was a member of the First and Second Continental Congresses, (1774-76) and a member of the first South Carolina State General Assembly in 1776. He was unable to sign the Declaration of Independence because of illness (his son signed it) and while en route to his home, died from a stroke. U.S. Congressman Thomas Lynch Jr. was his son.

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from South Carolina.

Born near Georgetown, South Carolina, Thomas Lynch, Junior, graduated from Cambridge University and studied law in London. He returned home and married Elizabeth Shubrick, and settled down to life as a lawmaker and wealthy planter.

At the start of the American Revolution, he volunteered for the Army, and while in North Carolina, he became severely ill, possibly from malaria, which left him a semi-invalid for the rest of his life.

While representing South Carolina in the Second Continental Congress, his father, Thomas Lynch Senior suffered a stroke on February 20, 1776, and in March the SC Legislature elected Thomas Jr. to go to Congress to care for his father and to take over his father's duties as an additional delegate. Although in poor health himself, Thomas Jr. found his father too ill to continue, and remained just long enough in Philadelphia to vote for independence and to sign the Declaration of Independence.

Thomas Lynch Sr. eventually improved, but not enough to sign the Declaration of Independence himself. In late 1776, father and son headed home together. While stopping in Annapolis, Maryland, in December 1776, Thomas Senior suffered a second stroke and died. Thomas Jr. reached home, but his own health was failing. Hoping that an ocean voyage and a change in climate would help him recover, he and his wife, Elizabeth, embarked on an ocean voyage in late 1779. The ship was lost at sea with all aboard. The couple had no children.

Mr. Norman E. Madden, Sr., 68, of the Remmel Community, outside Newport, died Saturday, June 18, 2011 at his home in Remmel, in an area known locally as Coon Island.

He was born Jan. 9, 1943 in Cow Lake Community, Beedeville, the son of Roy E. and Lola Iris (McFadden) Madden.

Mr. Madden grew up with nine siblings in the Cow Lake Community, attending school in Beedeville.

General Notes: Husband - LTC Milton “Milt” Maness

Lt. Col. Milton "Milt" Maness (Ret.), 102, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at his home, a victim of Covid-19.

Widower of Jo' Ellen (Reed) Maness, whom he met at Limestone College, and the son of the late Jesse Middleton Maness and Julia Edna Brown Maness.

We lost a stalwart member of the Greatest Generation: born and reared in the Victor Mill community of Greer; a scholarship athlete at Wofford College; defender of his nation as a B-29 bomber pilot flying sorties over Japan from Guam; a Christian and member of First Baptist Spartanburg for more than 75 years; a father to five in Duncan Park; a businessman and entrepreneur; a salesman. He kept his mind sharp with daily rounds of "Words with Friends" and the Herald Journal's "Cryptoquote".

Milt was a standout athlete at Greer High School and Wofford College, where he earned letters in all four sports. He was the last Wofford athlete to earn 14 letters, three each for football and basketball (freshmen were not eligible to play varsity in those sports), and four letters each in baseball and track-and-field.

Among his other sports achievements: he was a scout for the Boston Red Sox and discovered Jim Rice, who played for Boston. He rejected a minor league baseball contract when he returned from the Army Air Corps in 1946 because he didn't feel it would adequately support his family. Instead, he joined Crutchfield's Sporting Goods as a salesman, and then began his own sporting goods store, Maness Sporting Goods. For many years he was a manufacturer's rep selling educational supplies to schools throughout South Carolina. When he was 72, he helped found Spartan Alarm, which he later sold.

He joined the Army after he left Wofford and earned a spot in the Army Air Corps. He flew bombing raids over Japan from Guam. He was later in the Air Force Reserves, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He was the "Voice of the Spartanburg High School Vikings" football team as public address announcer for 46 years, ending in 2007.

A supportive father, he helped son Binky found a youth basketball squad, The Junior Trotters, which entertained at halftime shows from Rochester, NY, to Florida for many Atlantic Coast Conference and SEC schools and tournaments. Along with his late friend Bob Tallant, he sponsored and coached Pony League teams in Spartanburg for a dozen years.

He and Jo' were members of First Baptist Spartanburg since making their home here in 1946; a member of the Early Fellowship Class at First Baptist; and a member of Downtown Sertoma for many years.

Survivors are his sons, Milton Brown "Binky" Maness Jr. (Eileen), Mark Reed Maness; daughters, Melinda M. Gray (Clifford "Chip"), Molly Jo' Maness Horton (Mike Small), and Mia Lauren Maness; two special sisters-in-law, Patsy Reed Turner and Mattie "Midget" Reed Turner; ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a beloved friend, Margie Johnson.

Predeceased by a granddaughter, Hayley Maness Fust (25 Dec 1970 - 19 Jun 2016).

A memorial service was held later.
