MILITARY SERVICE: Prior to the Civil War he served as Major of Infantry in the Militia and was familiarly known as "Major" throughout his life. "It may be noted that the date of enlistment year is not given, but a reasonable assumption would be that Major Hydrick enlisted just after the passage of the Ordinance of Secession which was December 20 1860" at Orangeburg (also shown at Columbia). Served as 2nd Lieutenant and as 1st Lieutenant of Capt. R.V. Dannelly's Company, subsequently Company D, 20th SC Infantry, C.S.A. Major of the 15th Regiment SC Militia November 30, 1960.

Jacob served one term in the House of Representatives of SC. He was a Methodist and Superintendant of the Sunday School of Trinity United Meth. for many years. A horse kicked him in the head causing his death.
HISTORY: He was educated in the schools of Orangeburg County, SC. He served one term in the House of Representatives of S.C. He was a strong advocate of Governor Benjamin Ryan Tillman, who espoused the cause of the farmer. A devout Methodist, he was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and Superintendent of its Sunday School for many years.
DEATH: He met a tragic death while returning from a speaking engagement at a Sunday School gathering at Ebenezer Methodist Church, in the lower part of Lexington County. A driver lost control of a runaway horse, hitched to a buggy, which jumped into the back of the buggy in which Jacob was riding. He was struck on his head by a hoof of the horse, causing a concussion from which he died two days later at the home of his sister, Rachel Ellen Livingston, near the scene of the accident, only 2 miles from Ebenezer Church. The driver of the runaway horse was arrested and put in jail at Orangeburg, upon the theory that he was guilty of criminal negligence for not directing his horse around the Hydrick buggy. A mob of irate citizens of the community formedand marched on the jail at Orangeburg, presumably to inflict harm on the driver, but the sheriff having custody, had taken the precaution to speed him to the Penitentiary at Columbia for safe keeping. The mob dispersed. However, upon trial for manslaughter by a white jury, the driver was acquitted.

Washington, Jan 15 [1921] - Judge Daniel Edward Hydrick, associate justice of the supreme court of South Carolina, died of pneumonia at the Raleigh hotel this morning at 1:15 o'clock. With him at the time of death was his son, Dr J L Hydrick. Mrs J M Wallace of Spartanburg, a daughter, was on her way to Washington when the end came. The remains left Washington tonight at 10:45 o'clock and interment will be at Spartanburg Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
Judge Hydrick came to Washington December 31 [1920]. He became ill on the first day of the year. His illness in the beginning was diagnosed as la grippe in severe form. Pneumonia developed.
In addition to the children in Washington, Judge Hydrick is survived by another son, Daniel Hydrick of Spartanburg, and a daughter, Miss Ellie Lee Hydrick of Phoenix, Arizona.
The first news of the death of Justice Hydrick was received at the supreme court rooms here from Dr John Hydrick of Washington, a son of the associate justice. The telegram contained no details, merely saying that Judge Hydrick had died in a hospital.
News of the death of the associate justice came as a great shock to his many friends and admirers here. State officials, attorneys, and many there friends expressed regret at the loss of Justice Hydrick. Many expressions of sorrow were heard on all sides yesterday afternoon and last night.
Daniel Edward Hydrick was the youngest son of Major Jacob H Hydrick and his wife, Margaret Hildebrand, a daughter of Jacob Hildebrand. He was born in Orangeburg County August 6, 1860.
Early Life on Farm
The early life of Associate Justice Hydrick was spent on the farm of his father and in attending the neighborhood schools. Opportunities were limited, but Major Hydrick sent his son to the Columbia Male Academy for a few months. This school was conducted by Captain Hugh S Thompson, who was later elected governor.
At the age of 16, Justice Hydrick entered the preparatory department of Wofford College, but did not remain in school long, being called home on account of the illness of his mother. his mother died in June of 1877 and in the fall of the same year he went back to school, entering the freshman class of Wofford College. He went through the junior class, having entered in 1877 and leaving in 1880. He was awarded the alumni medal for the highest proficiency in general scholarship in his junior year.
After leaving Wofford, Mr Hydrick went to Vanderbilt University, graduating there with the degree of A B in 1882. At Vanderbilt he was given a scholarship in Greek for proficiency in this language. He graduated with honor. He was offered a post-graduate fellowship in English and literature, but declined the fellowship.
In the fall of 1882, he was elected principal of the Darlington Male Academy, holding this position until 1885. He was admitted to the bar in the spring of 1886.
Married in Spartanburg
October 24, 1882, Justice Hydrick was married to Miss Rosa Lee, the eldest daughter of John A Lee of Spartanburg. Justice Hydrick began the practice of law in Spartanburg in the fall of 1887, soon thereafter forming a partnership with John W Carlisle. The firm of Hydrick & Carlisle continued from 1887 until 1894. In the fall of 1894 Justice Hydrick went to Union and the firm of Hydrick & Sawyer was formed, only existing for a short time, however. In 1895 Justice Hydrick and Stanyarne Wilson formed the firm of Hydrick & Wilson of Spartanburg, remaining in partnership until 1900.
From 1895 to 1900 Justice Hydrick was county attorney for Spartanburg County. In 1897 he was elected to the legislature, serving until 1905, when he was elected judge of the Seventh judicial circuit. He held the circuit judgeship until 1909 when he was elected associate justice of the supreme court by the general assembly, succeeding Ira B Jones, who had been made chief justice.
Judge Hydrick's first election to the legislature was in 1887, to fill out an unexpired term. His election as associate justice in 1909 was marked by a long fight for the position on the part of his friends.

5/28/2020, Sue Walker Griffin emailed me that "Suzanne died suddenly at her home in Virginia on Sunday. No one knows exactly what happened, but her Dad died at the age of 68 of a massive heart attack, so I am assuming……She is being cremated and will be buried at a later date (July 24, 2021) in Stateburg next to Rusty. Her daughter Jennifer is totally quarantined and doesn't want Rusty's daughter in Washington State to have to fly, etc. etc. So don't know when."
