~~~~~~~~~~~~
The immigrant ancestor of most of the Blackwelder families in America was John Blackwelder, who was born Johannes Schwarzwalder on 29 January 1684 in Monchweiler, Wurttemberg, Germany. His parents were Jacobus Schwarzwalder and Margaretha -----. Monchweiler was in Germany's Schwarzwald (or Black Forest). On 27 November 1708, in Durrn (a town in Wurttemberg, about 60 miles north-northeast of Monchweiler), Johannes Schwarzwalder (a wheelwright) married Elisabetha Maushardt. Elisabetha, a daughter of Andreas Maushardt and Barbara -----, was born in 1688 (possibly in Lienzingen, a few miles to the east of Durrn).
Johannes and Elisabetha had at least six children, three of whom survived infancy: Johann Adam (born 30 September 1719), Gottlieb (born 8 November 1722), and Anna Margaretha (born 29 Oct 1725). The Schwarzwalder family were members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Durrn. Elisabetha died in Durrn on 27 March 1734. Johannes remarried there on 7 May 1737 to Christina, widow of Johannes Keller.
Not longer after his marriage to Christina, they applied to leave Germany for America and, on 29 March 1738, were granted a permit to do so. They sailed in the ship Friendship, which arrived in Philadelphia on 20 September 1738. Not long after arriving, they anglicized the surname from Schwarzwalder to Blackwelder. According to the declaration of importation found in Brunswick County, Virginia Order Book 3, p. 27, dated 3 April 1746, "John [Johannes] Blackwelder made oath that he imported himself, his sons, John [Johann Adam] and Caleb [Gottlieb] and daughters Elisabeth and Margaret [Anna Margaretha], and his sister Catherine Blackwelder directly from the Marquisite of Durlach of Germany into the Province of Pennsylvania . . ." There was no mention of his wife Christina and it is not known if she made the trip to America or if she died after their arrival. No record of a daughter Elisabetha has been found in the Durrn church records nor is anything else known about her.
On 25 August 1742, in Williams Township, Bucks County (the part of which became Northampton County in 1752), a Johannes Schwarzwalder married Elizabeth Bernhardt, daughter of William Bernhardt. It is not known whether this Johannes Schwarzwalder is of the same family that immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1738.
The Blackwelder family next appeared in Brunswick County, Virginia in 1744. A patent of land granted to Martin Phifer dated 16 June 1744 described the land as "adjoining Blackwelders". Martin Phifer (son of Caspar Pfeiffer) married to John Blackwelder's daughter Margaret on 1 October 1745. According to Virginia Land Patent Book 26, pp. 159-160, John Blackwelder was granted 290 acres of land on 12 January 1747 "in the County of Lunenburg on both sides of Horsepen Branch of Allen's Creek". (Lunenburg County was formed from Brunswick County in 1746. The part of that county in which the Blackwelders lived was subsequently divided into present-day Mecklenburg County, Virginia in 1764.) John Blackwelder, Caleb Blackwelder, and Martin Phifer appeared in tax lists of Lunenburg County from 1748 to 1752. (John Adam Blackwelder's name did not appear in these tax lists.)
On 7 September 1756 (see Lunenburg County, Virginia Deed Book 4, p. 313), John Blackwelder conveyed his 290 acres of land on Horsepen Branch of Allen's Creek to Caleb Blackwelder. The deed was signed by John and Margaret M. Blackwelder. The date of John's marriage to Margaret M.is not known. Nor is the date of John's death. There was a marriage of a Margaret Blackwelder in Cumberland County, Virginia on 26 November 1763 to Thomas Wilks, so presumably John died in southern Virginia between 1756 and 1763.
Margaret (Blackwelder) Phifer and her husband Martin moved from Lunenberg County, Virginia to Anson (now Cabarrus) County, North Carolina around 1757. Martin Phifer was living on Cold Water Creek as early as 1758. On 29 October 1760, he was granted 278 acres of land on Cold Water Creek (see Mecklenburg County, North Carolina Deed Book 1, p. 152). (Meckleburg County was formed in 1762 from Anson County. Then, in 1792, Cabarrus County was formed from the part of Mecklenburg County where Martin Phifer lived.) Martin died in 1791; his wife Margaret in 1803. They had at least four children.
Caleb Blackwelder deeded the land received from his father to William Philps on 19 January 1760 (see Lunenburg County, Virginia Fiduciary Book 4, p. 41). He then moved with his wife Betsey Phifer to Anson County, North Carolina around 1760. Caleb and his family belonged to the Dutch Buffalo Creek Lutheran Church, formed in 1745. This was later known as St. John's Lutheran Church, now located near Mount Pleasant in Cabarrus County, a few miles east of Concord. Caleb died 1794. He and his wife Betsey are buried at St. John's Lutheran Church. They had at least eight children. Most of the Blackwelders of Cabarrus County are descended from Caleb Blackwelder and Betsey Phifer.
The name Blackwelder is an Americanized form of the German surname Schwarzwälder, which means "one from the Black Forest" (Schwarzwald). The German name combines Schwarz ("black") and Wald ("forest"). It can also be interpreted as an English name meaning "black forest," from the Old English words blæc ("black") and weald ("forest").
NOTE: The name, Schwarzwelter was Americanized into Blackwelder...
All census & land records are under Blackwelder, but headstone has the german form of the name.
His wife and children are buried under the name Blackwelder.
A headstone was found in St. John's graveyard that was placed at the head of the grave of one Gottlieb Schwartzwelder just ninetyfive years ago. He is the great ancestor of the Blackwelders in this country. He was born in Germany in 1722 and died in 1794. He came to this country about 1750, settled, also lived and died at the place where Mr. Adam Blackwelder now lives. The house in which he died is still standing, and is occupied by the said Blackwelder. We are informed that Mr. M. L. Blackwelder is preparing sketches of the history of the Blackwelders in this country. The ancestral lines are all diagrammed, showing the families
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jess Stokes' first wife was Bedie McAdams. He and she married 3 January 1897, Pickens County, AL. Jess and Bedie were first cousins; Bedie was the daughter of James Milton McAdams and Susan Ollie McAdams. Jess's mother, Mary Aseltine McAdams Stokes, and Bedie's father, James Milton McAdams, were siblings; they were both children of Samuel Lacy McAdams.

After Bedie's death, Jess married Josephine "Jo" McAdams, the widow of Tom Stokes, and the daughter of Obidiah McAdams. Jo was a half-sister to Susan Ollie McAdams, mother of his first wife, Bedie. Both Jo and Susan Ollie were the daughters of Obidiah McAdams. But Jo was the daughter of Obidiah's second wife, Mary Cobb Jennings, and Susan Ollie McAdams was the daughter of Obidiah's first wife, Temperance Earp McAdams. Jess's mother, Mary Aseltine McAdams Stokes, as stated above, was the daughter of Samuel L McAdams. Samuel L and Josephine's daddy, Obidiah McAdams, were brothers, both sons of John McAdams. So, Jess's mother, Mary Aseltine and Josephine were first cousins; and Jess and Josephine were first-cousins-once-removed.

General Notes: Husband - James Milton "Jim Mit" McAdams

Married Susan Ollie McAdams who was his first cousin. Their children were Bedie McAdams (married Jess A Stokes who was her first cousin), Emmer McAdams (married C Wesley Butts), Lee McAdams (married Belle Z Stokes who was his first cousin), Mittie McAdams (married John W Cork), Dee McAdams (died young, wasn't married), Lena McAdams ((born Jan 1888, Al, died after 1900), Clemmie McAdams (married Vance "Vancie" Alexander Kyles), Glow Beatrice McAdams (married Robert "Bob" Cork) and Crecie McAdams (married Edward Preston Pate).

While it is certain that Samuel Lacy McAdams was his father, it isn't known with certainty if his mother was Samuel's first wife, Clara Amanda Dowdle, of if his mother was Samuel's second wife Sarah Pickens Dowdle.

Per quote from page 178 of William Henry McAdams book "A History of Thomas McCadam Family", "Of the nine children known to have been born to Samuel, the first three were certainly born to his wife Clara Amanda Dowdle, and the next two were probably also born to her. The census record of the McAdams family in 1860 shows that no children had been born in the household between 1855 and 1860. These circumstances imply that Clara died after Mary's birth around 1854 and that Samuel and Sarah were then married sometime before 1860 since their daughter Elizabeth A. McAdams was born in June 1860.

The children born to Samuel and Clara Dowdle McAdams were
(1) Sarah Jane b. Apr 1843, d. 28 Apr 1928; married Elious John Kelly; book states Sarah is buried in Pickens County, AL, but doesn't state where in Pickens County.
(2) Samantha Catherine "Mant" b. 3 Feb 1847 AL, d. 30 Aug 1918 Millport, AL, married William E. "Bill" Stokes; see F.A.G. Mem 107752484
(3) John Robert b. Sep 1849, AL, d. after 1910, Clay Co., MS; married Nancy Melvinie "Nan" Atkins; John & wife are buried w/o markers in a plot w/their son, William Samuel McAdams & his wife in a cemetery at West Point, Clay Co., MS.

Children "probably" born to Samuel & Clara Amanda Dowdle were
(4) James Milton McAdams b. 9 Jan 1852 Fayette Col, AL, d. 18 Mar 1935 AL. Married his first cousin, Susan Ollie McAdams. See F.A.G. Mem. 207090429
(5) Mary Aseltine b. 14 Mar 1858, AL, d. 6 Feb 1908, AL; married John D. Stokes; Mary's birth yr from the 1860, 1870 & 1880 census implies she was born abaout 1854.

Children born to Samuel & Sarah Pickens Dowdle McAdams:
(6) Elizabeth A. "Betsy Ann" b. Jun 1860 Al., d. 26 Mar 1939; married Thomas A. "Tom" Phillips. See F.A.G. Mem 76912078.
(7) Amanda Victoria "Toad" b. 1864 Al., married John A. "Doc" McGahey. They moved to Fulton Co., Ar, btw 1891 & 1894; then moved to TX btw 1901 & 1910 where they were enumerated in Rockwall County in 1910.
(8) William Alexander, b. Feb 1866 AL d. aft 1900 having moved to AR no later than 1895. Married Arlie Lohimore abt 1895 in Fulton Co., AR.
(9) Nancy J. McAdams b. 1869, AL. Married Wytt P. Atkins.

All the information about the children of Samuel L McAdams is quoted from William Henry McAdams' book pages 178, 179, 180 and 182. William "Bill" Henry McAdams passed away in September 2022 per his son, Dale. If you want to purchase the book "A History of Thomas McCadam Family", contact William's son, Dale, at (505) 299-0608 or send an email to "whmca@comcast.net". It is a wonderful book with a treasure trove of information.

General Notes: Wife - Susan Ollie McAdams

Susan was the daughter of Obidiah F. McAdams who is buried in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery between Millport and Kennedy, AL (Lamar County). Her mother was Temperance "Tempy" Earp McAdams (pronounced like Arp per Mrs Nannie McAdams Vail, daughter of Samuel Bennett McAdams); Temp was born in 1827, South Carolina or Alabama, and died about 1861 in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi.

Susan married her first cousin, James Milton "Jim Mit" McAdams, son of Samuel L and Clara Amanda (Dowdle) McAdams. They were married at the home of John McAdams by W. F. Prater, JP. John was probably their grandfather. See list of her children on "James Milton McAdams, Memorial 207090429.
