General Notes: Husband - George Neverson Davidson Hydrick

BIRTH: No birth certificate ever found. Birth date listed on Social Security application, (April 9, 1937), and death certificate (13 May 1990) as 19 January, 1900. Birth date listed on military records (Parris Island July 6, 1919) as 19 January 1899.

OCCUPATION: Aviation Electrical Inspector.

SOCIAL SECURITY APPLICATION: April 9, 1937. Living at 1711 Airline Drive, Houston, Texas. Social Security# (on file)

PARENTS: On a Social Security Application, which George Neverson Hydrick filled out 4/9/1937, he listed his father as Charles C. Hydrick (deceased), and mother as Emma Butterfras (deceased). This is very confusing. While living, George always told his family that his father was Andrew Jackson "Jack" Hydrick, and his mother was Emma Butterfras Hydrick. Because of dates regarding the birth of George Neverson Hydrick, being 1899, or 1900, Andrew Jackson Hydrick was supposedly married to Belle Flint at this time, marrying Florence Patillo in June 1900, and Emma Butterfras in July 1901. (See notes of George's father, Andrew Jackson Hydrick.)

BTW: This is the first and only time I have found a Charles C. Hydrick listed as father of George. I am not sure where this came from, or who Charles C. Hydrick is? I have found records showing Andrew Jackson Hydrick to be married to Emma Butterfras, and Emma Butterfras was certainly the woman who raised George Hydrick.

MILITARY: Service Number 153498, July 11, 1919, Houston, Texas. Another Service Number 277446, November 17, 1939, Portsmouth, Virginia. Military Records requested by Jeanette Jackson (George's daughter) under the number of 153498 show that George Neverson Hydrick became a Private in the Marine Corps on July 11, 1919. Copies of his Service-Record Book were sent to Christi Hydrick at the request of Jeanette Hydrick Jackson, who sent them to Ora Smith, who holds those copies in file. As stated above, in these documents his birthdate is listed multiple times as January 19, 1899, and being born in Houston, Texas. He enlisted in the Marines for a term of 4 years. Embarked on USS Kittery at Charleston, S.C., Sept. 25, 1919. Sailed same date for foreign tropical shore service in Cuba. Arrived and disembarked at Nerwita (?) Cuba, Sept. 29, 1919 (signed Major Turner). Embarked on board USS Henderson at Guananamo Bay, Cuba, March 1, 1921, sailed same date, arrived at Hampton Roads, Virginia, March 1921, disembarked March 21 (?), 1921 (signed Capt. Maurice Holmes). Extra and Special Duty Details - Corral 11/16/19-2/29/20; Radio Mechanic 3/1/20-3/27/20; Orderly 4/1/20-5/10/20; Messman 12/31/20-1/20/21; Labor 5/21/21-11/12/21.

Feb. 24, 1931, Application for Certificate in Lieu of Discharge...showing George applying for a certificate in lieu of lost or destroyed discharge certificate, and request that it be sent to him at the following address (left blank). Lists his birthdate as 19 Jan 1899, with a personal description of his appearance. Goes on to state that he was discharged 31 December 1921 at the Marine Barracks, Navy Yard in Washington D.C.. His discharge certificate was lost or destroyed on or about December 12, 1930 under the following conditions - Misplaced or lost to Civil Service Commission.

March 1, 1935, An Honorable Discharge letter by special order of the Major General Commandant for his (George's) own convenience, December 31, 1921, at Washington, D.C., a Private, with character "excellent". (signed L. D. Hermle, Major, Asst. Adjutant and Inspector, U. S. Marine Corps.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: In military records - eyes gray; hair light brown; complexion ruddy; height 68 inches; weight 140 lbs.; mean circumference 34"; expansion 4"; vision in right eye 20-20; vision in left eye 20-20; indelible or permanent marks upon his person S.Vac. OBITUARY: George Neverson Hydrick, 90, of Anaheim, a retired quality-control electrical inspector, died Sunday of natural causes. General Notes: Wife - Lucille Thelma White

DEATH: Written by Lucille's daughter, Jeanette Hydrick Jackson. Jan 1995

It was Dec. 9th about 11:00 pm. Granny was in the emergency room and Cindy was back there sitting with her. She was laying in the bed and she looked to her right and held up her arm and said "Here I am, take me." She then turned her head to the left and looked at Cindy and said "I have to wait in line, because there's people ahead of me."

Then on Dec. 10th and 11th she was doing pretty good. On Dec. 12th she started feeling bad again. It was around 9:00 or 10:00 pm. She was talking about Jan's birthday. She said she was waiting for Jan's birthday. Her voice became really soft and sweet. The sweetest voice you could ever hear. She knew who Jan and Cindy were. (note from Ora Smith: up to this point for many years before Granny's death she did not recognize her family) She kept wanting her chest rubbed and not to be left alone. She said to pray for her. She told Jan and Cindy she loved them. She told Jan "Happy Birthday" on the 13th of Dec. and then she just rested up until 9:10 pm. She was very peaceful. She left this life in grace and peace, as she deserved. She is still a very sweet and beautiful lady and loved very much.

Per son Conrad ("Beau"), his dad left Alabama at age 16 to work as roughneck in Texas oil fields. He rode the rails like a hobo to reach oil fields around Baytown and Goose Creek. He worked on building the Humble Oil Company's Baytown Refinery. He became a constable and fire chief at Goose Creek. Moved to Ingleside to work on Humble's refinery there. In 1929 he sent for Joise who was teaching school in Alabama to join him and get married.

Walter was very active in the CIO labor union, serving as president of the local union. He was president in 1945 when a strike was called at Ingleside. Humble closed the refinery. The family then moved to Corpus Christi (about 25 miles away) where Walter opened a trucking business which folded after a year. Walter then moved to Columbus, MS where he operated a grocery and produce business.

General Notes: Child - William Homer HYDRICK

Relationship to Dennis Morgan Hydrick: Grandfather

William was in WW1 - US Marines. He and brother, Jimmy, left town together without telling anyone and went to Memphis where they enlisted on December 28, 1916. They called Graham (Buddy) and told him what they'd done. They were sent to Europe where they became separated.

He was a farmer and a Methodist. Per Jack Hydrick 8/21/94, Homer was robbed of $200 - 300 from his footlocker while in the military. The footlockers had to be kept unlocked for inspection at all times. With pay of only $5 per month, the robbery was a big deal. Later Homer found out who had stolen his money and beat him nearly to death. Homer was thrown in the brig and was never "quite right" after that.

Per Grandson, Mike Hydrick's recollection, he remembered being told that Homer was suffering from "shell-shock, or what today is known as PTSD

General Notes: Child - Ira C. HYDRICK

Relationship to Dennis Morgan Hydrick: Granduncle

This per conversation with Jack Hydrick 8/21/1994:

After October 1912 death of his mother, Ira Hydrick was supposed to have been farmed out to married children of G.W.H. However, he wound up at home of son Guy Ernest Hydrick for his wife Henrietta Huey Hydrick to take care of. At this time Henrietta already four children alive (out of six births). Ira required diapering and babying so he was sent to state institution where he later died of consumption (TB) almost 12 years to the day after his mother .
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aunt Dessie's story is somewhat different. From her book:
Ira C. Hydrick was the sixth child of Martha Marilda Pruitt and George Washington Hydrick. He was born July 3, 1903, at Bay Village, Arkansas. Ira was mentally retarded. When Mamma died on October 12, 1912, Beachie and Marel took care of Ira along with the rest of the family. At Beachie's death on January 5, 1917, the family became separated. Ern and Ett kept Ira in their home for a year, but he was growing up. It was therefore, quite a responsibility for anyone to keep him at home. Naturally, the wives of the other married brothers did not want to accept this responsibillty. The only alternative was for Pa to enter him in the State Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was age fourteen when he went to this hospitalon December 10, 1917.
I wrote the hospital for Ira's medical record. I received a copy of his clinical record showing his evaluation upon his entry into the hospital, also the results of the doctor's examination and diagnosis. The clinical record shows that upon his entry into the hospital that Ira's chest was thin, his breathing was free and easy, and his lungs were negative. His palate and pharynx were normal, also his body temperature and blood pressure, as well as smell, vision, taste, and hearing. There was no tenderness or pressure over the nerve trunks or muscles. However, the record did state that coordination tests were poorly performed. A form letter was attached, showing that Ira died of pulmonary tuberculosis on October 13, 1924. The evaluation leads me to believe that Ira contracted tuberculosis after he entered the hospital. There were no comments on the form letter as to how long he had tuberculosis or how it was treated. The following statement was on the bottom of this form letter: "The tremendous increase in number and variety of genealogical requests necessitates the submission of this form. We sincerely hope it meets your needs." The Director of Medical Record Services, Mrs. Elizabeth Mattinson, R.R.A., did type the following note to me: "Miss Hydrick, I am sending you a copy of the history on Mr. Hydrick. This is all the information we have on him. Hope this will be of help to you. "
So we can only hope that Ira was treated well during the years he was in this hospital and that the disease from which he died was not too prolonged. In any form, I feel that Ira's life was not an easy one, and that his situation was very tragic.
Letter to Minnie Lee and William Hydrick, December, 1975 (NOTE: my parents ~DMH)
"Dear Minnie Lee and William,
You probably think I am not going to send you a Christmas card, or message of any kind., but I have had to do some extra work for my part-time job boss, and that put me behind with everything. We were glad to hear from you. I remembered that we promised or said we would try to get to your house this year, but as Montie told you, we went to Pennsylvania to see Martha Jane, and the summer was gone.
Lately, I have had a renewed interest in the Hydrick genealogy. T.B. and Fannie took a big trip this summer and went to Orangeburg, S.C. and looked up the Hydricks. He told me two or three years ago when he retired he was going to do this, but of course I didn't know that he would. They came by to see Montie and I on their way back home; and gave me the address of "Ms. Rosa's" daughter, and her uncle. The information I have on the S.C. Hydricks came from Mrs. Rosa Hydrick Stabler's Family Bible, remember a copy of which I sent you with the chart comparing our line with Miss Rosa's line. So I have been corresponding with Mrs. Freda Myers, of St. Matthews, S.C., age 57, and her uncle, Brig. Gen. Onan A. Hydrick (ret) of Camden, S.C., age 87, who is Miss Rosa's younger brother. He has answered my questions about the Hydricks. I am sending you a copy of his first letter to me. It seems we have been on the right track. He thinks Old Big Grandma Polly (dad's great-grandmother) married one of the sons of Jacob Hydrick (1) and his (Gen Onan's) great (or great-great) grandfather was a brother, or another son of Jacob (1), who was the first generation in S.C. to be listed on the 1790 census. This would make us cousins from way back. Remember, Old Big Grandma Polly came from Orangeburg, S.C. to Arkansas, as a widow, with her sons, William and John, (my great-grandfather) and one girl. I was disappointed that he did not find our "Polly" listed in his family Bible, but you will note that he says in his letter that he has not read the 1820 or 1830 U.S. census, but he is sure some Hydricks would be listed on them. Maybe Old Big Grandma Polly and her husband, before she was widowed and came to Arkansas, would be listed in the 1820 or 1830 South Carolina census. So I have had the Librarian of the Sikeston Public Library to write to the State Historical Society of Missouri for the Cross and Poinsett Counties of Arkansas 1820 and 1870 ( sic) of the U.S. Census, and the Orangeburg County, S.C. 1820 and1830 census. I was advised by the Cape Girardeau, MO Librarian that the Historical Society would do this. They will come to this library on microfilm, and I can go to the newspaper office here, the only place in town who has a microfilm reader, and will attempt to read them. They have not come in yet. I answered Gen. Onan's letter outlining what I thought was correct from his letter and deductions, and he replied confirming that it was. He addressed his letter as Dear "Cousin" Dessie. Gen. Onan seems pretty sharp for his age, Freda Myers said he was very alert. She has written me two letters and sounds like a good old friendly southerner. She invited Montie and I to come to the Hydrick Family Reunion on July 4, 1976, so maybe they have a reunion every year. She also stated that she would send me one of Gen. Onan's books when they were published.
Well, I must write some more letters, but wanted you to know we'd found some "kinfolks" in South Carolina. If I find out anything from the census records, I will let you know
Maybe we can try to get to your house in 1976, and you all come here anytime that you can.
  Love, Dessie
P.S. I have just received a Christmas card from Freda Myers in the mail. She said, "You have made 1975 a wonderful year for us, and it is so nice to know that others are interested in their families. Hope some day to come to see all your families. Come to see us. Hope to get a letter off to you real soon." Doesn't she sound like a very nice lady?"
From Genevieve Goodpasture to Dessie Hydrick, written 1/1/60:
"The Hydricks were in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, in 1790.The first U.S. Census was taken that year and one Jacob Hydrick was listed as head of a family. There was one other male in this house over 16, 3 males under 16 and 2 females. It is my belief that the Hydricks came over with the other German settlers who came into South Carolina at Charles Town, as it was known, and settled in the forks of the Edisto River.
Back to the census of S.C., the first good census I have on Hydricks is 1850. The following were in Orangeburg Dist. Or county:
Jacob H. Hydrick 30 years old Born in S.C.
Margaret (probably his wife) 30 years old Born in S.C.
Jacob 2 years old Probably their son
Augustus 5 months old Probably their son
Kindred Hydrick 39 years old Born in S.C.
Jane 35 years old Probably wife of Kindred
Alexander 18 years old
Elizabeth 12 years old
William H. 10 years old
Jacob B. 8 years old All probably their children
John E 6 years old
Emmanuel P. 4 years old
Luther W. 2 years old
From Genevieve Goodpasture to Dessie Hydrick, written 2/29/60:
"I have written the Arkansas Department of History and Archives as I want the 1880 Cross County, Arkansas census read. The 1880 census gives more information than any other that we have to work with at this time. There is a chance that your ancestor, Jim Hydrick, will still living at that time. In his report he will give the place of his birth and that of his parents. Then we will know whether to look in South Carolina or elsewhere. You did not give me an idea of the date of his death so I'm just hoping. These are rough calculations but this is what I'm going on:
George Washington Hydrick, 2nd child of Jim's was born in 1859, so I would judge that his father was born circa 1830 and that means that Jim's father, John was born circa 1800 or 1805. In view of this, I am trusting your grandfather, James (Jim) lived to be past fifty. You see, he will be on that 1880 census report and will tell us where his father, JIM HYDRICK, and BESTY ( sic ) were born. I wonder how long your JOHN HYDRICK lived? I'll pick him up on the 1850 census one of these days.
Cemetery records will be a big help to us later on too. I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun chasing your ancestors.
I am sending for another book on S.C. marriages and deaths today. So far I have not picked up anything from the books I have read on the problems we have faced. However, many things are apparent: The Hydricks did not come from Switzerland with the Rev. Getzendanner bunch in 1735. I have covered this era very thoroughly. Nor do I think they came with the Rev. Adam Summer in 1745 but I am not positive of this yet. I have read several books that deal with these settlers and have not found a Hydrick. I'll keep looking though."
"I want you to please write a letter to an elderly lady over in South Carolina who knows a great deal about all the old families there. She is a Mrs. Frank C. Cain, St. Matthews, S.C. Point out the fact that there was one Jacob Hydrick in Orangeburg, S.C. in 1790 on the U.S. census. There were still Hydricks there in 1850. She is a wonderful person and I am sure you will get in interesting letter from her. She is past 80 but is one of the most active persons in South Carolina so I am anxious to see what she will tell you about the Hydricks."
From 1790 census of South Carolina: Jacob Hydrick, with son over 16, 3 sons under 16, one wife and one girl
From Family Bible of Hydricks:
 See enclosed pages from Bible loaned by Mrs. Rosa (Hydrick) Stabler of St. Matthews for copying, to whom we owe many thanks for sharing this record with us. It is from Kilmore's (illegible) New Analytical Reference Bible, published in New York 1896 - a huge book but in perfect state of preservation.
The census records indicate that Jacob Hydrick had a son over sixteen years in 1790, therefore born before 1774; Jacob II was probably one of the three sons under 16, since census was usually taken about June, and he was born in March.
"Miss Rosa" told me about hearing about her great uncle's visit to cousins in Arkansas, and his spending some months there. Hanford Augustus was his name, but he returned to Orangeburg, S.C., where he died. I don't know when, it wasn't in the book.
Miss Rosa is the one born in 1876, a wonderful person, she went up on Sunday to visit a dear friend, who is not well, now 93, and her husband, 95. She returned the same day, and was up and around yesterday, and phoned me of her trip, which she enjoyed very much - about 150 miles each way, and up the mountains. Wonderful endurance and strength, for a much younger person.
I enclose a chart of each of you - partial chart, which explains the connection a little perhaps.
Enjoyed your letter, which adds to our data on Hydrick family in our Historical Association of Calhoun County, S.C.
Best wishes and let me hear, please. Where did you get my name?
Cordially, Lillian M. Cain
From Genevieve Goodpasture to Dessie Hydrick, written 5/18/60 (her reply regarding Lillian M. Cain's letter, and other comments.)
"Mrs. Cain has proof or is reasonable sure that this Balthaser Hydrick's descendants came to South Carolina. But I am wondering, is Jacob Hydrick on the 1790 census a son of Balthaser or not?
Mrs. Cain is past 80 and sometimes she doesn't make things clear. I rush on to say that I hope I'm half as alert when I'm her age. We will have to remember this fact when reading her letter through. I have written out a chart of what I think Mrs. Cain was trying to tell you on her chart. [End of letter]
About Miss Rosa's great uncle who visited in Arkansas:
III. Hansford Augustus would be your John Hydrick's nephew; James Hydrick's first cousin, your father's second cousin, and your 3rd. Am I right?
As I see it: Miss Rosa's great uncles were brothers of her grandfather, Jacob, who married Hilderbrand. So, her first cousins are the children of generation IV, (or V on her chart). The way I figure, you and Miss Rosa are fifth cousins.
Brothers Jacob and John
Child Jacob 1st Cousins James
↖2nd Cousins↘
Child A. J. 3rd Cousins George W.
↖4th Cousins↘
Child Miss Rosa 5th Cousins Dessie
(One of my friends in Corpus Christi disagrees with me. She says "1st cousin once removed" for 2nd cousin and on)
In 1800 there was one Jacob Hydrick in Edgefield County, S.C. He was 26-45 years old. He had 3 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 female 10-16, and 1 female 26-45. He is the only one I found in all the S.C. census for 1800.
Now in 1810, Orangeburg, S.C. census we find one John (it is written "Jn") Hydrick, 16-26, 1 male under 10, 1 female 16+26 (He certainly could be yours, could he not)
Also in this same report there was a JO Hydrick, 16-26 (sp Hidick)
2 males under 10
1 female, 16-26
And then on this same 1810 census, we find:
JC Hydrick with these in his household (The enumerators could not spell any better than I. He seems to be the 1790-1800 Jacob Hydrick. He moved from OrangeBurg to Edgefield, and then back to Orangeburg, I guess)
1 male under 10
1 " 10-16
1 " over 45
1 female under 10
1 " 16-26ntbl
1 " 26-45
I read all the 1820 and 1830 U.S. census reports for the entire state of S.C. I did not take down any Hydricks. Surely if they had been there, I would have written their data in my xx notebook, maybe not? I will try to get back to Houston or Corpus real soon and run more of these reports.
The John C. Hydrick certainly could be your ancestor. Where is the rest of the family though? If your James was the youngest of his children, it is possible that he was married and living elsewhere - in Arkansas.
(Note to Madie from Dessie: Geneviere lists the 1850 census in this letter that you will see on page 1. She also continues with the 1850 census as follows)
A. J. Hydrick, 29, born in S.C.
Sarah Hydrick, 40, " "
Mary Lofly, 49, " "
Joseph Strenbel, 53, " "
Edward Hydrick, 21, " "
Charleston Hook, St. Andrews Parish
 John C. Hydrick, 44, R.R. employee, born in S.C.
 Mary E. Hydrick, 40, Born in S.C.
 John A. Wienger, 16, Born in S.C.
The John A. Wienger - 16, in above household is not a Hydrick. He just happened to be there the day the enumerator came to take the census. In those days, it was not uncommon for a family to keep a young boy around the place to do carpenter work, keep the garden, etc. No relationship was shown on the 1850 census report.
You asked about Miss Rosa's Bible. My guess is that Jacob H. Hydrick (1819-1903) bought the Bible and recorded the information we find. He surely knew his own father's birth, etc. The Bible was not printed until 1896 so it was purchased after that date.
The only way I can "see" Mrs. Cain's chart is as follows:
I. Jacob Hydrick, born about 1745-1750, whose widow, Polly,
came to Arkansas (your Big Grandma)
II. Jacob Hydrick, born March 3, 1790, married Elizabeth Evans,
and did not follow his mother to Arkansas
←Brothers→ John Hydrick (yours), married Betsy (Dessie note: Mary Pauline and was a R.R. employee)
III. Jacob Hydrick, married Hilderbrand ←Cousins→ James Hydrick, married ________ Perry
IV. 'A. J. Hydrick, married Viola Riley ←Cousins→ George Washington Hydrick, married Martha Marilda Pruitt
V. Miss Rosa ←Cousins→ Dessie
"I am enclosing a letter from Mrs. C. S. Woodward (of Arkansas Dept. of History and Archives, Little Rock, Arkansas). Just keep her letter for your file. When I hear from her, I'll let you know. I am so thankful that I did not just go on and tell her to send the tax reports on your ancestors. I do want to say that I think her fee is reasonable compared to those charged in other sections. I am paying a gentleman $20.00 a day to search court house records for me over in Mississippi.
We must keep these facts in mind as we do your Arkansas research:
 1.What is now Arkansas became part of the Missouri Territory in 1812
 2.Missouri applied for statehood in 1819 and Congress created the Arkansas Territory which included the present state of Oklahoma.
 3.Arkansas became the 25th state of the union June 15, 1836
 4.The panic of 1837 brought most of the settlers in the old southern and eastern states
Now, concerning CROSS COUNTY: This county was formed in 1862 out of Crittenden, Poinsett, and St. Francis counties. Crittenden was formed in 1825, Poinsett in 1838, and St. Francis in 1827.
We will definitely find your ancestors in Cross County in 1880. I am anxious to see this report.
Dear Mrs. Goodpasture,
Yes, the early tax records for each county from its formation until about 1865, are here.
The 1880 census report is not indexed, they are the original books, and some are on microfilm.
I do not know anyone in Cross County who does research, the Court House (county) might give you a name of a research worker. I presume your families came to Cross County, am I correct? It would be a monumental task to check tax records if you do not know the county in which your people came, but not difficult, if they came to Cross Co., or if you know the town in which they lived.
My charge for research is $1.50 an hour. It takes about 2 hours to read all of an 1880 census, but if the name you are seeking is found early in the census list, the time is less. This is for a county reading in full.
Sincerely,
(signed) Ruth W. Woodward
From Genevieve Goodpasture to Dessie Hydrick, written 10/23/60:
"Here is the report I received from Mrs. Woodward. Since you have not read an 1880 census report before, I will make a few comments to help you understand it a little better.
The enumerator went from door to door up one road and down the next, so as one looks at one of these reports, he can see the neighbors on each side of his family. Since we had Mrs. Woodward to read this report to us, we cannot see the neighbors. I did not ask her to take all this information since it would have taken more time and I wanted to keep this at a minimum. I am disappointed that she did not give us the entire household of the P.T. Greenwood family. As you see, I have asked her to send this to us. (on a separate letter to Mrs. Woodward). She should not charge anything for this. Whenever I read a census, I always take the whole family down when one member of my family is living with that family. Sometimes it is a clue as to the background of the family one is interested in chasing.
I will write out in full this report that Mrs. Woodward sent:(BELOW)
In Coldwater or Mitchell or on the road between these two towns on the 12th of June, 1880, the enumerator called at the home of James N. Heydrick who was a farmer, 49 years old, and born in Arkansas. J. N. Heydrick's father was born in South Carolina, and the enumerator left the space blank for the record of the place of birth of J. N.'s mother. Either J. N. did not know or the enumerator failed to ask him. Also, I have this type of a report where the enumerator would write in a dash which meant a ditto. In my own mind I would judge this J. N. Heydrick (this spelling is that of the enumerator and not your ancestors), is your grandfather, James N____ Hydrick. He was born in 1831 in Arkansas, so now I will read the 1850 census as soon as I can get back to Houston. He will be listed as a 19 year old boy in his father's household. The 33-37 indicated that this house was the 33rd one that the enumerator had visited in that BEAT or RANGE. This family was the 37th one he called on.
We next see P. E. Heydrick, 30 years of age, keeping house, born in Georgia. Her father was born in North Carolina and her mother in Georgia. Date of her birth was about 1840.
B. M. Heydrick, 24 years of age, daughter, born in Arkansas, as was her father, J. N. Heydrick. Her mother was born in Georgia. Since Jim Hydrick married the Henderson girl in 1865, we must presume this B. M. child was the daughter of J. N. and the Perry girl. The next daughter, F. A., 18 must be the Florie you told me about. Next, we see J. W., 12, son and this must be the child of the Henderson girl. Also, the J. D. Heydrick and D. L. A., 3-year-old girl.
Next we see your great-great-grandmother, M_____ Heydrick, 88 years old, living with her grandson, J. N. Heydrick. She was born in South Carolina and the grandson did not know where her parents were born.
Your father, George Washington Hydrick seems to be the next one on the list. Do you agree? He was 23 years of age, born in Ark. His father was born in Arkansas and Mrs. Woodward had a hard time figuring out what the report gave for the place of his mother's birth. When we look at his full sister's report, B. M. and F. A., we see that they said that their mother was born in Georgia so my opinion is that your Grandmother, _______ Perry, was born in Georgia. The next is Ella Summitt Hydrick, wouldn't you say? She was born in Indiana. Next is your half-brother, Ernest, who was just one year old. The C. W. Jellas, 27, was probably just working for your grandfather, J. N. Hydrick. He could be related, but probably was not.
It is evident your Hydricks were not in Cross County in 1865, 66, or 67. They were not listed on the tax rolls those years.
I am naturally wondering were JOHN HYDRICK and his wife, Betsy, were in 1850. They might have died before this time or they could have been in another county or state for that matter.
Dear Mrs. Goodpasture: -
I read the entire 1880 census, and it was very long, as you no doubt know, and found only these Hydricks, there are a lot of them. Do hope that they will fit, the grandmother, who was 88 yrs., was born in S.C., in 1792.
It took two hours to read this census, so my charge is $3.00.
From Genevieve Goodpasture to Dessie Hydrick, written Nov. 12, 1960:
"I received the enclosed census from Mrs. Woodward.
You will note that the P. T. Greenwood who was head of his house lived between Coldwater and Mitchell or in one or the other of these two towns. He was born in Alabama and his parents place of birth was not known to him or whoever gave all this information to the enumerator. There is something peculiar about this report in that the last four children "seem" to be the children of the widow, S. J. Greenwood but they are listed as children of P. T. Greenwood. I think that they were his grandchildren and that the enumerator was careless or did not realize how important it is to be accurate. The 1880 census must have tried the patience of the enumerators anyway. It is the most valuable one we have at our disposal because it does give the place of birth of the parents of each person listed. Since S. J. Greenwood was 25 years old, I would judge that the children that follow are hers. I guess you know that girls in those days married by the time they were 15. I rush on to say that all of these people were living under the same roof. This was the fourth house and fourth family the enumerator called on in this range or district.
Dessie, I thank you for identifying all these people on the census for me. I wonder if the grandmother, 88 years old, is not your Big Grandmother? She is the grandmother of J. N. Hydrick, so she must be the Arkansas immigrant, Polly Hydrick, if I have figured this out correctly.
From Genevieve Goodpasture to Dessie Hydrick, written 12/12/60:
I went over to Houston and checked the 1850 Poinsett County, Arkansas census report for myself. I want to rush on and tell you that this film was very light so it would be easy to make a mistake, however, I always use a magnifier when I locate the family I'm interested in so I am sure the enclosed report is accurate.(Note to Madie from Dessie: this 1850 census agrees with Mrs. Woodward's census on page 8)
From seeing this report I would judge that your Hydricks "MIGHT" have located in the state of Tennessee for a short duration. Or it is possible that the family had to stop over for William G. L. to be born in 1813. This very often happened. At any rate we see that Mary Hydrick was born in South Carolina, in 1792…her son, John, was born in S.C. in 1810…son William was born in Tennessee in 1813. It appears from the children of John Hydrick that the family came to Arkansas by 1830.
People have always given their children nicknames so it makes it very difficult to identify them on census records. Very often the enumerator would ask for another "first" name and the family were in the habit of calling that person by a second name or a nickname. Thank goodness, we can see your direct line from these 1850 and 1880 reports:
I. Mary Hydrick, b. 1792
II. John Hydrick, b. 1810
III. James Hydrick, b. 1832
IV. George Washington, b. 1857
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Letter from Dessie to Isham Price "Bill" Hydrick Jr and wife, Ruby

Sikeston, MO
March 1, 1969

"Dear Ruby and Bill,
At last I an enclosing photostatic copies of the Hydrick history, also copies of several other papers you will probably be interested in reading.
You stated In your last letter that Bill's father's father married a Hughey. Since writing you and becoming interested again, I have been studying the history again. I now see it as:
Gen Name Married Gen Name Married
I. _____ Hydrick Polly I. _____ Hydrick Polly
II. John Hydrick Betsy II. John Hydrick Betsy
III. James (Jim) Hydrick Perry girl III. William Hydrick Hughey girl
IV. George Washington Hydrick
(my Dad)
Martha Marilda Pruitt
(my Mother)
IV. Isom Hydrick your Mother
V. Dessie V. Bill Hydrick Ruby

You will see from the information that my Dad gave to me, that he stated that John Hydrick, our great-grandfather, married Betsy (Little Grandma) and their children were James (Jim) Hydrick who was my grandfather and William Hydrick who was your grandfather. Their other children were Jake, Isom, Sarah, Mary Jane and Katie.

You will also see that on my Dad's report he lists Jim, William and Isom as brothers, but he goes on to say that Isom was killed in the Civil War. Since you, Ruby, stated In your letter that Bill's grandfather married a Hughey, I believe that your grandfather's name was William. On the chart I had in my letter to you, I showed that your father's name was Isom, and also that your grandfather's name was Isom, but I had not thoroughly studied it out.

My dad's report shows that Isom and William are brothers, but that Isom was never married, and that he was killed in the Civil War.

Then, to William and the Hughey girl, your father, Isom, was born. Ruby, you stated that Isom (Bill's father)died in 1939. So did my father, George Washington Hydrick, die in 1939. Isom and George were of the same generation, as you and I, Bill, are of the same generation.

So, I conclude that since Mrs. Clyde Eldridge (who must be your cousin and she my cousin? - her report is also enclosed) stated that the Hydricks came from South Carolina in 1820 - when Andrew Jackson was President - that she must have meant that one of them was Old Big Grandma, Polly, who was a widow. Mrs. Eldridge did not tell me the name of Polly's husband. Either she did not know, or failed to tell me his name, or it could be that I failed to ask her that question.

Mrs. Goodpasture, who you will note gave me most of my information, believes that Polly is listed as Mary on the 1850 U. S. Federal census. See the copy of U.S. census 1850 of Poinsett County, Arkansas, which is enclosed. So, evidently her first name was Mary and her second name was Polly (or maybe Pauline), and she was listed on the census as "Mary Hydrick, age 58, born in South Carolina." This same census shows her son, "John Hydrick, age 40, born in South Carolina", or -grandfather. The second line from John, on this census page, shows "James Hydrick, age 18, born in Arkansas". He would be my grandfather. Further down on the page it shows, "William Hydrick, Jun., 20, born in Arkansas". I judge this is also John's son, and the William who was grandfather. Note that "Nancy J. Hydrick, age 20, born in Kentucky" is the next name listed under William's name on this same page of the census. As the census takers would usually list husband and then wife, and then their children, I judge Nancy J. to be William's wife. The next line shows, "John L. Hydrick, 1/12 (or one month old) born in Arkansas". This child, I imagine is William and Nancy's child. Was your grandmother Nancy J. or do you know? It appears that your grandfather William was two years older than my grandfather, James.

Look at page 2 of the "History" and you will see I received a letter from Mrs. Lillian M. Cain of St. Matthews, South Carolina about the Hydricks. I also received a long record of the South Carolina Hydricks from her which was taken from the old Jacob Hydrick family Bible. Mrs. Rosa Hydrick Stabler is the person who gave Mrs. Cain this information. Miss Rosa told Mrs. Cain about having cousins in Arkansas. I do not have but one copy of this record. Mrs. Cain also sent me a chart showing Miss Rosa's direct line of ancestors, and showing my direct line of ancestors. I will send you a copy of these papers later if you want them.

Now look at the last page of the "History" and you will see chart that I completed. You and I have shown Jacob Hydrick born about 1745 to 1750, and have shown Polly as his wife. After my recent study of the "History", and comparing with Mrs. Cain's chart, I do not believe this "man and wife" is correct. That would make about 42 years difference in Jacob's and Polly's ages, so she be his wife. Mrs. Cain shows the first Hydrick on her chart as Jacob; then after this first Jacob, she shows another Jacob Hydrick, the first generation in South Carolina, or that is, he was the first generation to be shown on the first census that was even taken - which was in 1790. Under this second Jacob, she shows Polly as his wife. However, she does show a question mark after Polly, like this "Polly?", as if she is not sure Polly is his wife. So when I completed chart, I evidently did not notice the question mark and did not figure the age difference. I sent a copy of Mrs. Cain's chart to Mrs. Goodpasture. You will see on page 5 of the "History" that Mrs. Goodpasture lists "I. as, Jacob Hydrick, born about 1745-1750, whose widow, Polly, came to Arkansas." However that was at the time Mrs. Goodpasture and I were corresponding regularly, and while we were both trying to gather up information and trying to figure things out. So I might have just noticed that contence ( sic ) of Mrs. Goodpasture's when I completed my chart and just wrote it down. Anyway, It appears we are still stumped there, and actually don't know Polly's husband's name. We do know she was married twice (and maybe 3 times). According to Mrs. Eldridge, she was first married to a Mr. Davis. She is the first generation of Hydricks of our direct line that we know of in Arkansas. And if she was born in 1792 and came to South Carolina in 1828, that would make her age 36 when she came to Orangeburg, South Carolina with her children, William and John.

One other thing: the military record of Isom Hydrick, which is enclosed, shows that Isom was furloughed home sick. My dad stated in his report that he was killed in the Civil War. So maybe my dad just remembered that Isom died, and my dad probably he was killed in the war instead of furloughed home sick.

Ruby, I believe I stated in my letter to you, that you were the only Hydrick who was interested enough in the Hydrick history to want to really work on it. Well, I didn't mean Mrs. Eldridge. She was a Hydrick, and I did get a lot of information from her but I meant of our generation.

You will also see when you have read the complete history, why I said it would be better for you to read the history than for me to try to tell or write you how to go about getting information. You see you have to read census records, ask relatives, look on old tombstones, and just dig out information any way that you can. It really is a job, but if ( sic) is very interesting and fancinating ( sic ) when you get into it.

I'm sure you noticed Mrs. Goodpasture started me off. Her husband is Burl Goodpasture. He used to live in Sikeston, and he went to school with me. His family moved to Texas when Burl and I were in high school. Burl married in Texas, and they have one daughter who married a Hydrick. Burl's wife, Genevieve, is very interested in genealogy and she was tracing this Hydrick line. Burl remembered my name was Hydrick, so Genevieve wrote me to see if there was any connection. From there on, I became interested, but as far as I know, her daughter's husband and I are of no connection. The Goodpastures live in Victoria, Texas. Is that town close to you?

Well Ruby, after reading everything over, please give me yours and Bill's comments. Do you know of any corrections? Or any information that I have not shown? If so, be sure to tell me, because I have tried very hard to get it all down correctly. You can see that there's a lot of studying to do on it. When it is all down in order, it looks more simple, but getting all the facts and information is the big job.

If you need any help - when trying to look up something on your own, Ruby, write me any time, and I will help you if I can.I haven't gone back to work yet from being off on account of my surgery, but the doctor said I could go back to work on March 10. So I just have another week to sleep late and loaf.

The cost of have the "history" photostated ( sic ) was $2.00. It was 10 per sheet.Write soon and let me know what you think of my "Hydrick History".

Love, Dessie"

Denny’s note: Saint Andrews Passengerlists)

The following information – the oldest and very valuable – was sent to Dessie Hydrick by Genevieve Goodpasture the year 1960:
From the book entitled A COLLECTION OF UPWARD OF THIRTY THOUSAND NAMES OF GERMAN, SWISS, DUTCH, FRENCH AND OTHER IMMIGRANTS IN PENNSYLVANIA, from 1727 to 1776 by Prof. I. Daniel Rupp, published in Philadelphia by IG. Kohler, 202 North Fourth Street, in 1776.
“Sept. 12, 1734. Palatines, - ship Saint Andrew, John Stedman, Master, from Rotterdam last from Plymouth – eighty-nine males above sixteen, forty-one males under sixteen, women and female children one-hundred and thirty-three – all 203.”
In another account it is stated that this boat was “freighted with Schwenckfelders”. These left their homes in April, 1734, embarked at Altoona, Denmark, May 14, arrived at Philadelphia September 22, and on the 23d they declared their fealty. On September 23d all male persons above the age of sixteen had to appear in the Court House, in order to swear allegiance to the ruler of the country, to wit: the King of Great Britain and his successors to the Crown of England.” Still in another account it is said that these were of all denominations and sects: Lutherans, Reformed, Episcopals, Presbyterians, Catholics, Quakers, Tunkers, Mennonites, Sabbatherians, Seventh-Day Baptists, Separatists, Bohmists, Schwenckfeldians, Tuchfeldtians, Eucthelists, Jews and Pagans, Etc.”

The following information was given to me (A. Odessa Hydrick) by Mrs. Clyde Eldridge of Memphis, Tenn.

Mrs. Eldridge’s first name is Clyde. She is now a widow. She had a sister and they are daughters of Bob Hydrick of Wynne, Ark. Bob Hydrick was the son of William Hydrick and the Hughey girl (see information from dad - George W. Hydrick). William Hydrick was the son of James N. (Jim) Hydrick, and James N. was the son of John Hydrick, who was the son of Polly Hydrick (Old Big Grandma).

Mrs. Eldridge stated that after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and when Andrew Jackson was President in 1828, the Hydricks, Hendersons, Hugheys, Ransays, Wheelers, and Fousts (and probably more) all in a group, came from Orangeburg, South Carolina to Arkansas and settled around Hydrick, Arkansas which is about 3 or 4 miles from Cherry Valley, Arkansas.

Mrs. Eldridge also confirmed that Old Big Grandma was Polly Hydrick, a widow from South Carolina, but said Polly had been married twice, first to a Mr. Davis. (However, in my notes I show “first to Davis then to Wyle”, and so it might be that she was the third wife of whichever Hydrick she married). Mrs. Eldridge said Polly’s sons were William and John. (There might have been more children, however, I was just asking about my direct line of John Hydrick and son James N. Hydrick.)

Mrs. Eldridge said the Hydricks were of Austrian descent (which agrees with the ‘Collection of Upward of 30,000 Names, etc’ who came to this country in 1734, consisting of Germans, Swiss, etc.) and that the Hydricks could not stand the Catholics. So in 1732 (which is two years difference in the record of 1734) the Hydricks who were settled in England and who also could not stand the Episcopal Church of England, came to the United States (with other immigrants) and settled in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and built a Baptist Church. Out of gratitude to William of Orange, who became King of England, the settlers named Orangeburg, South Carolina after him. (Now I have not read up on William of Orange, but I called the librarian here in Sikeston and she read me about him out of a book—over the telephone—and my notes say that William of Orange became William III, King of England, or (I could not tell exactly from my notes) William, the 3rd King of England, Scotland and Ireland. He was born in Holland, son of Prince of Orange, and Mary, daughter of Charles I of England. I will read up on William of Orange before I complete the final draft of the Hydrick history.

Mrs. Eldridge also said that the Perry girl, who was the second wife of grandfather James N., was a full-blooded French woman. The third wife of grandfather James N. was named Sarah Henderson, according to Mrs. Eldridge. Mrs. Eldridge said that quite a lot of this information would be in a book entitled, “The First Five Centuries – History of Arkansas”. I have not been able to find this book.

I, Annie Odessa Hydrick, was named after Aunt Mallie's daughter, Annie Cooper Greenwood. G. Ernest (Ern), my half-brother named me. He was the oldest child of dad. (I have heard, and have always been under the impression that Ern named me Odessa after a daughter of his who was named Odessa, and who died in infancy).

Montie Pearl Hydrick Sadler was named after Aunt Mary Ann Hick's daughter. The daughter's name was Montie Hick, and she was already deceased when Montie was born. Aunt Mary Ann was mama's sister. Her husband's name was Albert Hicks.

Mama had 13 sisters and one brother. Their names are as follows, but are probably not in order of their dates of birth:
	1.Mary Ann, who married Albert Hicks
	2.Dainty, who first married a Bolden and then married Tom Foust
	3.Cora. Cora also married a man named Bolden. (I do not know if he was a brother to the Bolden who married Dainty, or not)
	4.Abby, who married a Lane
	5.Minnie, who married a Gatlin. (She died at Hancock, Arkansas)
		The above sisters and their families all lived at Hydrick, Arkansas, and in the year 1902 all five families
		moved to Buffalo Island, which is now Leachville, Arkansas, Manila, Arkansas, Caraway, Arkansas and Black
		Oak, Arkansas)

	6.Nettie, who married John Foust. Nettie and Dainty married brothers, John and Tom Foust
	7.Geraldine, who married Hiram Hodges. They lived in Hydrick, Arkansas, and Aunt Geraldine died at Hydrick.
	8.Nancy, who married Richard Hodges, brother to Hiram. Aunt Nancy died at Wynne, Arkansas.
	She is the only aunt of all the sisters that I knew well.

Dad first lived in Hydrick, Arkansas - where he was born - then moved to Cherry Valley, Arkansas. His and mama's children are: (1) Minnie, (2) Beachie, (3) Homer, (4) Graham (who was called Buddy), and (5) Jimmie, who were all born at Cherry Valley. Dad moved to Bay Village, Arkansas around 1900-1902. (6) Ira, and (7) Montie, were born at Bay Village. Dad moved to Vanndale, Arkansas. I, (8) Dessie, was born at Vanndale on November 10, 1910.

The above information was given to me by my brother, Graham Clayton Hydrick, on 2/27/69 when he was 74 years of age. He died June 2, 1973 at age 78. He would have been age 79 on July 4, 1973.

The others who were Mama's sisters are as follows:
	9.Lawuna Pruitt, who died when a baby
	10.Esther Pruitt, who died when a baby
	11.Luvena, who married Perry Ramsey of Vanndale, Arkansas
	12.Lugenia Pruitt (twin to Luvena), died when a baby
	13.Nellie Pruitt, who died when 13 years of age of inflamatory ( sic ) rheumatism
(See the PRUITT FAMILY information which was given to me, A. Dessie Hydrick, in 1942)

Mama's only brother was Matthew Holcomb Pruitt. He married Alaina Phillips from near weiner, Arkansas. They lived in weiner. They had no children, and Uncle Matt died about 1920 or 1921

Mama, or Martha Marilda Pruitt, was born 10/16/1864, and died Oct. 12, 1912.

From the information gained from the "History of Cross County' published by Wynne Progress in 1955, it appears that:

Old Big Grandma, Mary Polly Hydrick, came to Cross County (or to the Arkansas Territory as it was called at that time) from South Carolina, with Charlie Shaver (as stated by my father, George Washington Hydrick) in 1824 and settled near Bay Village or Sugar Creek, or probably at the place that was later named Hydrick, Arkansas after her grandson, James N. Hydrick, my grandfather. This book also lists her name as among those of the census of 1830 of Mitchell Township, Arkansas Territory (later part of Cross County) as Mary Hydrick and four sisters, and this same list shows John Hydrick, who was her son. This list also includes the name of Charlie Shaver. For this reason, to show how early our ancestors came to Arkansas, I have copied the following information about "The History of Cross County" from this book, which I have recently read.

"Cross County was created by an act of the Arkansas General Assembly in November, 1862 while this state was under the dominion of the Southern Confederacy. When the Confederacy collapsed, Cross County was practically non-existent as far as the state was concerned officially. A new constitution had been formed in which Cross County was not mentioned, and in the making of which this county had not been represented or recognized, and the government under which it was formed was considered spurious and had perished. However, when the surrender had been completed and Governor Murphy had begun to reorganize the state government, he adopted Lincoln's plan of meeting emergencies by cutting all knots that he could not untie. He let the new county stand and issued commissions to the old officers on their taking the oath of allegiance. But when the members elected to the Legislature by Cross County in the biennial election of 1866, reached Little Rock, there was not a line in the Constitution or any legislative act that showed that any such county existed. However, the Legislature, acting on the theory that it was the judge of the election and qualification of its members, admitted them to seats. Subsequently, the Supreme Court rendered a decision to the effect that all acts of the rebel legislature, not in conflict with the Constitution of the United States, were valid, and therefore restored life to Cross County.

This was formed Cross County, out of parts of land from St. Francis County on the south, Crittenden County on the east, and Poinsett County on the North. The county was named in honor of Colonel David C. Cross, a prominent leader of this section of the state and by far the largest landholder in the locality at that time. He came to the locality about 1850 from West Tennessee, bought a large tract of land in what is now the present county of Cross, and became a large land speculator. At the outbreak of the Civil War he owned some 85,000 acres in Poinsett and what is now Cross County. When the muttering of war was heard he was elected Colonel of the 5 Arkansas regiment, but saw little service, and on account of ill health returned to Cross County. He offered to donate his residence for a court house, and his offer was accepted and sale of lots were advertised to take place on November 25, 1865. This was several years since the county was formed. The War between the States had so demoralized affairs generally in this region that official matters in regard to the county had been postponed. In the winter of 1862 an election was held to appoint commissioners to select a suitable site for the county seat. Because of the war, these commissioners made no report until July, 1865, but this report was recorded in the minutes of the county court, which read in part which follows: "said lands being donated to this county by one David C. Cross, and it further appearing that same commissioners have proceeded to lay off the site so selected by them into the form of a town, which town said commissioners have designed by the name of Clayburne."

The fond dream of building a town at Clayburne was never realized. The County Clerk had his office at the residence of Colonel Cross. The clerk was Dr. S. D. McClaren, who lived near a hamlet named Pineville, six miles northwest of Wittsburg. A term or two of the County Court was held at Pineville, near Dr. McClaren's residence and the records were kept at his house. No term of the circuit court was held while the county was under confederate jurisdiction. At the May term of the county court in 1868, a petition was signed by a majority of the taxable inhabitants of the county, seeking the removal of the seat of justice, and asking the court to order an election for the purpose of electing three commissioners to decide a suitable site. The election was held on Saturday, June 6, 1868 and J. M. Lavesque was one the the (sic) three commissioners.

At the end of the Civil War the old river town of Wittsburg was a deserted village. Not a single business house had been opened for more than three years, not more that a dozen families lived there. But Wittsburg was temporarily revived and clamored for the county seat, and that was when the new commissioners were elected. The report of these commissioners was given in August, 1868 "that the seat of justice, of the county of Cross, be at the town of Wittsburg". As stated by Goodspeed in the book, "Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Eastern Arkansas" published in 1890, the church and the school house served as public buildings during the entire time that Wittsburg was the county seat.

Upon completion of the Helena branch of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad through Cross County, Wittsburg began rapidly to decline as a place of importance. In September, 1884 Vanndale was chosen as the county seat, but did not officially become so until April 1886. The county seat remained at Vanndale until, after a special election, because the people of Wynne (the neighboring town) contested the election in the courts But when the county seat was officially located at Vanndale, actions were started to erect a court house, and this court house was completed May 24, 1886. The county seat remained at Vanndale until, after a special election it was moved to Wynne in September, 1903, where it has been located ever since. The present courthouse was erected in 1905 during the administration of County Judge Samuel A. Gooch.

As the county of Cross was not organized at the time of the beginning of the War Between the States, most of the soldiers from the county's present limits are credited to Poinsett County. However, this county raised five companies and sent some 500 men into the field. In 1861 the war sounded, and old Pineville became the assembly place, the old community then being in Poinsett county. It was in April of that year that David C. Cross and his neighbors gathered at the Camp Gound Spring. There was organized Company A of the 5h Arkansas Infantry and other units as well, with Cross as the Colonel. For the first year this company saw little fighting, but in the latter part of the struggle, was in many important battles and surrendered with General Joseph Johnston in North Carolina in 1865. Also, in the spring of 1861 Company C of the 13 Arkansas Regiment, was organized in Poinsett County, with a good many men from the limits of Cross County in the ranks. This company was immediately sent to the front and took part in the battles of Belmont, Shiloah and Corinth. After the latter battle, the regiment was re-organized and Lieut. J. M. Levesque was elected captain. The company then passed through the Kentucky campaign, participating in the battle of Perryville, Richmond and Murfreesboro. After a re-organization of the regiment, after the latter battle, Capt. Levesque was detached from this company, when he returned to Cross County and raised a company of calvary. This company operated in eastern Arkansas until 1864 when it joined Price on Missouri raid. On account of illness, Capt. Levesque did not accompany it on this campaign. The company surrendered at Wittsburg in May 1865. In 1862 Captain I. W. Deadrick was sent into the field. More than half of the men forming these five companies were either killed in battle or died from wounds or sickness. There were no engagements between troops in Cross County, yet the armies of both sides often passed up and down Crowley's Ridge, annoying the citizens and often interrupting their farming operations and other pursuits.

Wittsburg, a town of the past, was once the metropolis of Eastern Arkansas. Situated at the head of navigation of the St. Francis River, a short distance south of Levesque, its streets once hummed with the business of the traders who came to this newly opened wilderness of the great southwest. It was the county seat of Cross County from 1868 to 1884. Picturesque steamboats once tied up at Wittsburg.

Sketch of T. O. Fitzpatrick. This sketch of his life was written for the Wynne Progress' Centennial addition in 1936 by the late T. O. Fitzpatrick, who came to Cross County in 1855 and later move to Forrest City, Arkansas, leaving invaluable historical data. A part of this sketch reads as follows: "on October 31, 1855 when I was six years old, my father settled three miles west of the present site of Vanndale. In connection with our county centennial I sent to Washington and secured a photostatic copy of the census rolls of St. Francis country on the north, and the line between the two counties was approximately the same as the present line between Cross County and Poinsett. Two townships in St. Francis County as it then existed, Franklin and Mitchell, composed what is now Cross County. The list which I enclose gives the names of the heads of families who lived in the present limits of Cross County in 1830.

The census list of Franklin Township, St. Francis County, Arkansas Territory, in 1830, included George Allan, Michael Mitchell, Samuel Filingin and two slaves, Wright Tyer, Sarah Filingin, Robert Murphy, Jurdin Burrell, Joseph Curtner, Elizabeth Searcy, Robert Shaver, Lee Shaver and one slave, William Shelton, David Richardson and one slave, Mitchell Tyer, Stephen Tyer, John Crowson, (who married Old Big Grandma's daughter), William G. Cook, Warner Smith and a few others.

The Mitchell Township list included: Daniel Mitchell, William D. Robertson, Thomas Landers, Stephen Stacy, Samuel Mitchell and one slave, John Wright, Humphrey Hogan, George Dodson, Thomas Newell, James L. Ligon and eight slaves, William Deen, Lane Mullins and four slaves, Mary Hydrick and four slaves, John Hydrick, Charles Shaver and one slave, Elijah Cooper, Francis McAlister and a few others".

Bay Village, Cross County, Arkansas, was originally known as the Shaver settlement because the Shavers were the first settlers. settled on Sugar Creek, which runs through Bay Village, in 1824. This same Charles Shaver was the grandfather of Mrs. Rebecca Cooper, mother of Ed, Claude, and Gordon Cooper, who are well known in the county. (Ed Cooper married Annie Greenwood, the daughter of Ben F. and Rebecca Malvina (Aunt Mallei) Greenwood). Three other Shaver families settled near Bay Village and Sugar Creek, making a total of four Shaver families to settle there.

Cherry Valley is a town situated near the center of Mitchell Township, 15 miles north of Wynne. Among the earliest settlers were the Clampitts, Taylors, Mitchells, Mays, Hydricks, Dr. C. P. Jones, Dr. Wright, Stacys, Halks, Bowers and Jordans."

Hydrick Arkansas: The small settlement of Hydrick, Arkansas is located 3 miles north of Cherry Valley. In its thriving days, there was a church, schoolhouse, and post office, two stores, cotton gin, and grist mill, as well as several families in this settlement, and was named for my grandfather, James N. Hydrick, who worked for the railroad. The railroad went through Hydrick in 1888. Grandfather Hydrick owned one of the two stores, in which the post office was located, so he was appointed postmaster.

Among the other families who lived at Hydrick were the Hodges, Clemmons, and Fousts. Oliver Hodges was the father of Hiram, Richard and Sam. Hiram married my mother’s sister, Geraldine; Richard married my mother’s sister, Nancy. John Foust married my mother’s sister, Dainty. My mother’s name was Martha Marilda Pruitt before she married my father, G. W. Hydrick. I do not know at what time the Pruitt family moved to Hydrick, Arkansas.

Hydrick, Arkansas was shown on the Arkansas map until about 1950. At the present time, the “Hydrick Baptist Church” is still on the same olf corner, there are two places of business, to my knowledge, and several families still living in this community.

I recently read the book, “The History of Cross County”, which was published by the Wynne Progress in 1955, and I have copied the section indicated in this information that I have just written from the book.

The following information was given to me, A. Odessa Hydrick by my father, George Washington Hydrick, age 78 years on July 5, 1935, as far back as he remembered:

Old Big Grandma (my great-great grandmother, and dad’s great grandmother) whose name was Polly Hydrick, a widow, came from either North or South Carolina with a Charlie Shaver. She had three children, two boys, William and John Hydrick, and one girl (name unknown). The girl married A. Jack Tyer. Don’t know who William Hydrick married.
John Hydrick (my great grandfather) married a girl named Betsy and had five boys and three girls, the boys being Jim Hydrick (my grandfather Hydrick), William Hydrick, Jake Hydrick, Isom Hydrick, and Ben Hydrick; and the girls being Sarah Hydrick, Mary Jane Hydrick and Katie Hydrick, these people being dad’s uncles and aunts and my grand-uncles and aunts.
Dad’s Uncle William Hydrick married a Hughey. Their children are Tiny Hydrick, Mary Beck Hydrick, Isom Hydrick, and Bob Hydrick.
Dad’s Uncle Jake Hydrick married a Taylor. No children were born to this union. Great-Uncle Jake died.
Dad’s Uncle Isom Hydrick was killed in the Civil War. He never married.
Dad’s Uncle Ben Hydrick was killed in the Civil War. He never married. Those two great-uncles fought for the south, or the Confederate Army.
Dad remembers the soldiers of the Civil War as he was about seven years old. However, no fighting was done around his house.
Dad’s Aunt Sarah married a Henderson. This union had Florence Henderson, Jim Henderson, Tom Henderson, Arthur Henderson, and Elmos Henderson. Henderson died and    Aunt Sarah Hydrick Henderson married again, this time to Jake Roberts. They had one boy named Jodie Roberts.
Dad’s Aunt Mary Jane Hydrick, the oldest girl, married John Pink Greenwood. Their children were Mary Jane Greenwood, who married a Hughey, Sarah Jane Greenwood, one boy, John, who died and was never married; Nadie who married Bill Foust; Laura who married a Tom Liptrot; another girl (I failed to get her name) who married Bill Brown; a girl named Alice who married Charlie Greenwood (didn’t change her name). Alice died and her sister, Lily, married this same Charlie Greenwood; and another boy, Isom.
	(I might have the above paragraph incorrect, and I failed to ask my dad about it, as on my paper that I have written
	as follows: “Dad’s Aunt Mary Jane Hydrick, the oldest girl, married John Pink Greenwood. Their children Aunt Mary Jane,
	who married a Hughey; Sarah Jane Greenwood”, and so on as I have written above. In the next paragraph (below) I show
	that dad’s Aunt Kate Hydrick married Pink Greenwood, so I believe great-Aunt Mary Jane Hydrick married a Hughey and
	great-Aunt Kate Hydrick married John Pink Greenwood)
Dad’s Aunt Kate Hydrick married Pink Greenwood. They had two children, boys, John Greenwood and Jim Greenwood; both are now living in Oklahoma.

All these families lived around Hydrick, Arkansas or Sugar Creek (in Cross County) as it was then. It was later called Hydrick Creek, and Hydrick, Arkansas, and got its name from dad’s father, Jim Hydrick. He helped construct the railroad through there and he was elected railroad or depot agent.

My grandfather, Jim Hydrick, first married a Greenwood widow who had two children, Royal Greenwood, and a girl, Tilda Greenwood, who died when about grown. Then grandfather Hydrick married dad’s mother whose last name was Perry. Their children were Aunt Mallie Hydrick, born in 1856 and who married Uncle Benjamin Greenwood; dad (George Washington Hydrick) who was born March 6, 1857; and a girl, Florie Hydrick, also a baby that died, and I failed to find out if this baby was a boy or girl. Dad doesn’t even remember his mother’s first name as she died when he was very small. My great-grandmother, Betsy (wife of John Hydrick) and who dad called Little Grandma, too Aunt Mallie, dad and Aunt Florie to raise. Grandfather married again – (when dad was about 8 years of age and Aunt Mallie 9 yrs.) a young Henderson girl. They had two boys, John Hydrick and Jim Hydrick, half-brothers to dad, and one girl (Dad’s half-sister) Dovey Hydrick. This Henderson girl was the third wife of Grandfather Hydrick. (Handwritten note in the margin:“Sarah Henderson so Mrs. Clyde Eldridge said” )

John Hydrick (half-brother to dad) married a Lawrence

Jim Hydrick (half-brother to dad) married but dad doesn’t know her name. He and his wife separated and he died.

The half-sister, Dovey Hydrick, first married a Hitower (handwritten in margin: Geo. D. Hitower). They had two girls, Clara and Jewel. Hitower died and Aunt Dovey married Hermon Sifford. They had no children and he died. (handwritten notes in margin: [Hitower] “born 6/14/1862, died 2/5/1899. Found this data on his tombstone, Tyer Cemetery, Hydrick, Arkansas when we made it down…” rest illegible)

Dad’s sister, Florie, lived with Aunt Mallie and dad with their grandmother, Betsy Hydrick (Little Grandma) until grandfather married this Henderson girl, and then Aunt Florie, Aunt Mallie and dad lived with this step-mother until dad and Aunt Mallie married. Dad first married Ella Summitt on Jan. 10, 1878. This Ella Summitt died, and Aunt Florie kept house for dad and his three children by Ella Summitt and who were: G. Ernest Hydrick, Oliver S. Hydrick, and Ordie Hydrick, until when about twenty years of age, Aunt Florie married Tom Stafford. They had one boy, Clint. Aunt Florie died when Clint was about two years of age. Dad and my mother kept this Clint for about a year or so, and then he lived with some of the Staffords, his fathers’ people.

Aunt Mallie Hydrick married Benjamin Greenwood.

George Washington Hydrick (dad) at about 20 years of age, first married Ella Summitt on Jan. 10, 1878, as previously stated. They had three children, G. Ernest Hydrick, Oliver S. Hydrick and Ordie B. Hydrick. Ella Summitt died Aug. 30, 1886, and in about two years had married my mother, Martha Marilda Pruitt, who was born Oct. 16, 1864, and who died Oct. 12, 1912 at the age of 48 years. She was about 24 years of age when she married dad. They lived at Hydrick, Arkansas, then at Bay Village Arkansas, Cherry Valley, Arkansas, and Vanndale, Hydrick. Dad and mama had four boys and four girls. Their names in order as follows: Beachie E. Hydrick, Minnie Hydrick, William Homer Hydrick, Graham Clayton Hydrick, James Talmage Hydrick, Ira Hydrick, Montie Pearl Hydrick, and myself, Annie Odessa Hydrick.

George Washington Hydrick (dad) died December 26, 1939. He would have been 83 years of age on March 6, 1940.

Gideon was in the Civil War---Co. A 50th ALA Inf Confederate Private.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Overview of 50th AL Inf:
50th Infantry Regiment was organized in Corinth, Mississippi, in March, 1862, by consolidating the 2nd and 5th (Golladay's) Alabama Infantry Battalions which were recently recruited. Originally mustered into Confederate service as the 26th (Coltart's) Regiment, its designation was changed to 50th in June, 1863.
The men were raised in the counties of Calhoun, Jackson, Lauderdale, Blount, Limestone, Walker, Fayette, and Tuscaloosa. Ordered to Tennessee the unit fought at Shiloh, saw light action in Kentucky, then was placed in Deas', G.D. Johnston's and Brantley's Brigade, Army of Tennessee, and was active in North Carolina. At Shiloh the regiment had 440 effectives, but because of casualties, sickness,and exhaustion, the number was less than 150 by the second day. It lost 4 killed and 76 wounded at Murfreesboro, 16 killed and 81 wounded at Chickamauga, and totalled 289 men and 180 arms in December, 1863. The unit sustained 33 casualties in the Battle of Atlanta and was badly cut up at Franklin. Few surrendered in April, 1865. Its commanders were Colonel John C. Coltart, Lieutenant Colonels G.W. Arnold and William D. Cradick, and Majors T.H. Gilbert and John C. Hutto.
Jim Lindsey, gr.grandson, lists his birthdate as 1/27/1824
His grandson John E. Hydrick gives his name as Gideon Elson born 17 Sep 1827
~~~~~~~~~~~~
G. E. Hydrick left Orangburg, South Carolina heading towards Alabama. He met Mary Elizabeth Stubbs along the way. They were married in her hometown of Calhoun, Alabama.

The Register indexed the name as G. E. Hardwick married to Mary E. Stubbs. However, when G.E. signed his name on his license it was G. E. Hydrick. See sources.

By 1860 they moved to Radsfordsville, Perry, Alabama. G. E. was an overseer for a farm. As new lands were opening up in Alabama, he moved and bought his own farm in North Port, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They are both buried at Paynes Chapel in Millport, Alabama .

There are some date discrepancies:

I think that Evertte (Everette) and Eleanor were twins. The 1920 census shows a son and daughter, both aged 0. It was taken on 8th-9th of January, 1920 and Everett's death was on 16 January, 1920 after the census was taken and recorded. No information is found on Eleanor during that period...however,

Opal was born in 1922 thus is not enumerated on the 1920 census. She was enumerated on the 1930 census as being 8 years of age and also Elnor (Eleanor) was there as 10 years old.

The 1870 census states her given name was Sarah. (But the 1900 Census, the Marriage Index, and the death certificate for her son, William D. McGahey, and her cemetery monument all show her name as Sallie or Sally.) But it was common for people named Sarah to be given the nickname of Sallie. She was a fraternal twin to William Hydrick.

Buddy lived at Odenville ALA.
Per http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tracks/reaves/dat26.htm#42 his name is William Jackson Hydrick

I also talked to "Buddy Hydrick" he is the son of Herman H. Hydrick and Annis Keller Hydrick, brother to Mildred. His name is
Jackson William Hydrick; I asked because all I had ever heard was Buddy and his sister told me it was William Jackson. So now I know for sure that it is Jackson William Hydrick. He was named for his grandfathers, one Andrew Jackson and the other William Keller; Got that from the Horse's Mouth so maybe that is correct

Augusta, GA - On May 2, 2017 our mother, Mrs. Mildred E. Poole Hydrick, wife of the late Mr. Jack Cohen Hydrick, will forever be with our father. She missed him dearly for the past 24 years and was truly his sweetheart.

She was the daughter of the late Mr. John Braddy Poole and Florrie C. Poole of Louisville, GA, but leaves behind daughters: Barbara Davis (Walter) and Dorothy Mallory (David) to cherish her memory and the unconditional love she had for us all. She was blessed with many nieces and nephews, to be part of her life as well as several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

We wish to thank her special angels: Kathy Spencer, Dayle Lipski, Kim Rhoden, Katie Davis, Faith Stone and Iris Taylor for their wonderful care, but especially their love for our Mama. May the deep abiding faith which carried her throughout her life be with you all.

A funeral service was held May 5, 2017 at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors with Pastor Pennye C. Duncan officiating. Interment followed in Westover Memorial Park.

THIRTIETH ARKANSAS INFANTRY
The Thirtieth Arkansas Infantry was organized in the summer of 1862. At least two other regiments were sometimes unofficially known as the Thirtieth Arkansas Infantry, the Twenty-Fifth and Thirty-Ninth regiments.
Like almost all Civil War units the Thirtieth Arkansas Infantry was frequently known by an alternate designation derived from the name of its commanding officer. Names of this type used by or for the regiment appear below.
James W Rogan's Infantry
A J McNeill's Infantry
W A Cotter's Infantry
Robert A Hart's Infantry
Paul M Cobb's Infantry
Joseph C Martin's Infantry
In addition to these designations, the regiment was also sometimes known by its nickname, or local designation, of the Fifth
Trans-Mississippi Regiment.

The regiment served west of the Mississippi River throughout its career, in the Trans-Mississippi Department and the Army of the Trans-Mississippi. Listed below are the specific higher command assignments of the regiment.
Sept 28, 1862 McRae's Brigade, District of Arkansas, Trans-Mississippi Department
Dec 10, 1862 Second Brigade, Second Division, First Corps, Army of Trans-Mississippi
Aug 1, 1864 Unattached, Fagan's Division, Price's Command, Army of Trans-Mississippi
Sept 30, 186 First Arkansas Infantry Brigade, First Arkansas Infantry Division, Second Corps, Army of Trans-Mississippi
In the early summer of 1864 the regiment was mounted and it served as a mounted infantry regiment until after the close of Price's expedition into Missouri in late 1864. During this period it was sometimes referred to as the Thirtieth Arkansas Mounted Infantry and, less frequently, the Thirtieth Arkansas Cavalry.

The regiment took part in a number of engagements during its career. These are identified below.
Dec 7, 1862: Battle, Prairie Grove, Fayetteville (Illinois Creek), AR
Dec 27 - 29, 1862: Operations against the Expedition over the Boston Mountains, AR
Jul 4, 1863: Attack, Helena, AR
Aug 1 - Sep 14, 1863: Operations against Steele's Expedition to Little Rock, AR
Sep 10, 1863: Engagement, Bayou Fourche, AR

Oct 7, 1864: Action, Moreau Bottom, Jefferson City, MO
Oct 9, 1864: Skirmish and Engagement, Booneville, MO

Oct 25, 1864: Engagement, Westport, Big Blue, MO
Oct 25, 1864: Battle, Marmiton, Charlot, MO
Oct 25, 1864: Engagement, Mine Creek, Little Osage River, Marias des Cygnes, KS
June 2, 1865: The Thirtieth Arkansas Infantry was included among the Confederate Trans-Mississippi units that surrendered at Galveston
According to unofficial sources, the regiment disbanded near Marshall, Texas, in mid-May, 1865, once the news of the collapse of the eastern part of the Confederate reached the Trans-Mississippi region.

In the book "Sacred to the Memory of the Ancestors of Russell County, Alabama", compiled by Phyllis W. East, FHL US/CAN 976.1485 V3e, there is record of _________(first name unreadable on headstone) Hydrick, born 1902,

Excerpt from email of Willie Mae Bunt <wbunt@hiwaay.net> Oct. 9, 2002:
Luther Whitfield Hydrick lived in Al. in 1900 and I had already found him and his wife Eula, living in Pike Co. in 1900. Now I want to look in 1910 and see if I can find them with their kids. They had a boarder living with them by the name of George Williams, he was the same age as Eula and was from S. C. as was Luther. That name stuck out at me since my mother had a brother named Luther and I have a brother named Luther (Reaves).
