Dau of Sam & Henrietta Johnson House Wilson

The following letter was found by Jane Orth in the personal effects of her mother Theda Vivian Wilson:
Nevers, France December 2, 1918
My Dear Cousin,
Received your letter about a week ago - was so surprised to hear from you but was glad to hear from you and to learn that you was well and getting along so nicely.
Well, the old War is over and all the boys are longing to get home. I am for one. I have been over here for eight months and I am tired of France. I will have something to tell about France.
I have been in the Service of Supply ever since I have been in France. I am with the 19th Regimental Transportation Company Band. We have a very good band - about thirty men in it. I was with an Infantry Band in the States but was trasnferred to the 19th Engineers in France. I have been well all of the time and didn' have to go to the Front. I guess I was luckey, but I wanted to see the Front so I would have something to tell - something exciting. I will have lots to tell anyway.
This is a very beautiful country. I have been all most all over France except around the Front. I guess the Lord was with me or I would have had to go in the trenches. I have talked with many boys from the Front and from what they say it was awful. And that I was lucky to do my bit behind the lines.
I received a letter from home today and all was well. Ruth's baby is large enough to talk a little; she talks about Uncle Earl all the time. I surely would like to see you. Is Annie still in St. Louis? Give me her address and I will try to see her when I get back and you also. Give my love to all you see and write to them. Tell them you heard from me and I want to see all of Dear Cousins when I get back. I am well and hoping to leave for home soon.
I'm yours Truly,
from your Cousin,T. E. House
Hdq Company, 19th Regt TC, US Army
*************************************************
Jane Orth did not know who T. E. House was. The first assumption is, of course, that the letter is addressed to Theda Vivian Wilson. Since Aunt Vivian's mother (Henrietta) was a House, the author was probably the son of Henrietta's brother. The problem of this reasoning is that Henrietta's only brother Robert B. House died at age twenty of a fever in1893. Robert was not likely to have had a son and a daughter (theafore mentioned Ruth) before age twenty.
The most likely assumption is that T. E. House was a second cousin. We may never find out, but I'll bet T. E.'s descenents would die for this letter.

General Notes: Husband - James Levesque

James M. Levesque was born in TN, and given the dates of siblings William and Elizabeth, about 1790ish.He married twice, noting in Divorces- Acts of State 1831-1832 that he divorced Sarah Levesque.This Sarah is most probably the single woman with her young daughter (5 or under) seen in the Limestone, AL 1830 Federal Census as living near the Martindales and William Levesque.

James seems to have married Elizabeth Arnett (b. Mississippi, d. 1847 ) soon after his divorce.I've seen it written that she was born in Mississippi, but I can't find any early Arnett families there, but do note several in 1820 & 30 in both Overton, TN and Giles Co., TN, which is where the Levesque siblings lived.James died in 1839. 2

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Capt. J. M. Levesque, the worthy and esteemed county clerk of Cross County, enlisted at the outbreak of the Civil War, in Company C of the Thirteenth Arkansas Infantry, the first regiment organized in that part of the State, Cross County, and was immediately elected orderly-sergeant of his company.
The regiment was sent to Fort Pillow, and thence to Kentucky, and was also in the battle of Belmont, Mo., November 7,1861 evacuating at Columbus, Ky, in March 1862. At the battle of Shiloh, April 6, 1862, Lieut. Joe Hall was wounded and Mr. Levesque was chosen to fill his place as second lieutenant. Shortly after this the first lieutenant was wounded and discharged, and our subject was elected to his position, and at the reorganization of the regiment at Cornith, in April 1862, he was elected captain, and served through the Alabama and Kentucky campaign, also participating in the battles of Richmond, KY, under Kirby Smith at Perryville, KY, and Murfreesboro, Tenn. At the reorganization of the army, he was sent to the Trans-Mississippi Department, and there engaged in recruiting a company of cavalry, mostly from Cross County; was in a number of skirmishes, but not any important battles, his company going on the Missouri raid under Gen. Price.
At the close of the war, he took up farming as an occupation; but in 1866 he was elected circuit and county clerk of Cross County, which office he held until the reconstruction of the county, when he was disfranchised for having held office at the beginning of the war, and in participating in the Rebellion. He then again engaged in farming In 1874 he was elected sheriff of Cross County and was re- elected in 1876 and 1878. In 1880 he was elected circuit and county clerk and was also re-elected in 1881, 1884, 1886 and 1888.
Mr. Levesque was born in Fayette County, Tenn., in 1834 (December 28), and was the son of James and Elizabeth (Arnett) Levesque. In 1854 he was married to Miss Nannie Willis and in the fall of that year he removed to Arkansas, settling in Cross County, in what was then a part of Poinsett County. The result of this marriage are five children, three of whom are still living: Elizabeth; Fannie; Willlie T.; James Cheathan and John Phillip.
J. M. Levesque died 26 August 1917 and was buried in the Vanndale Cemetery, Vanndale. Arkansas.
The child of James M. Levesque & Elizabeth Arnett was James M. Levesque.His father died when he was 5 and his mother when he was 13.He then went and lived with his uncle and aunt, Rev. William & Rachel Levesque.There is a lot of documentation for James on several sites/postings and there is a nice write up by Richard Levesque in the Winter 2006 Association Levesque Inc.'s "Levesque Info" - a bulletin pretty much devoted to the French Canadian Levesque lines.I'll just be very brief:
Captain James M. Levesque
   b. 28 Dec 1834, Fayette co TN
   d. 27 Aug 1917
& Nancy/Nannie A. Willis
   b. 1832, TN
   d. 23 Aug 1915, Cross Co., AR
They married about 1854-5 and went to Arkansas, where they joined his cousin Susan [Levesque] Taylor's family and Nancy's brother N. J. Willis.He bought 40 acres mid July 1859 and started farming. 2
October 2003 Grants Creek Cemetery Foster, Alabama Old Part Section 3 Surveyed by Jim Foster, March 29, 2001 Fosters, AL, Tuscaloosa County.
Fosters is 9 miles south of the city of Tuscaloosa from I20 and I59 take the Fosters Exit, you will come to old US 11, go straight across, go past the post office and school and when you come to a right curve you will see Grants Creek Road, turn right and go up the hill and you will see the church and cemetery on your right. If you are coming from the west on US 82 you would want to take the toll road around to old US 11 and 43 go south about 6 miles.
This Church and the cemetery is still active and had there 175th Homecoming this past June 2003. This is a peaceful and pleasant Church and cemetery.
In trying to transcribe these names from the stones, it was often very difficult due to the fact that a lot of the old stones were broken into sometimes three or four pieces. Sometimes they would fit together so that you could make out the names and dates, but often times there was enough missing that it couldn't be done. It was truly a wonderful experience and hopefully it will help many people in the future.
Oscar died in the eighties.
He was doing farm work in Carrolton, AL, but wanted his own land. He knew people in Tuscaloosa who wanted to sell to him. So he bought some land out in Fosters about 16 miles from Tuscaloosa. He went to work for Bryce Mental Hospital as a farmer. He farmed to institutions land with the inmates.
His son, Frank still owns the land. As per his son, Frank Hydrick
Oscar worked by the family farm in Millport, AL but wasn't able to buy any land of his own. He rented land. At that time they called it farming on the 4th: this was a sharecropper who paid his landlord 25% of his earning of corn and cotton. If they grew anything else then it was't part of the payment.
