GRIMM - COATES. A Brilliant Marriage at the Home of Mr. and Mrs. John Shook, On Thursday morning, December 17, guests to the number of about fifty assembled at Mr. and Mrs. John Shook's beautiful new residence at Spring Mills, to witness the marriage of Mr. Charles L. Grimm, of Madisonburg and Miss Minnie J. Coates, of Tyrone.

When the old family clock pealed forth the first note of twelve, the bride and groom gracefully marched into the parlor, upon a beautiful new rug purchased by Mr. Shook for the occasion, where Rev. J. M. Reariek pronounced them husband and wife.

After congratulations were extended to the happy couple, Mr. and Mrs. Shook, who so genially entertained the guests, swung open the door leading to the dining room and invited all to the elaborately prepared table, turkies, ducks, cakes, fruits, candies, etc., in abundance. Mr. and Mrs. Shook deserve much praise for the fine taste displayed.

At three o'clock the bridal party, accompanied by a large number of the guests went to the depot, where amidst a thick shower of rice they boarded the train for Lloysville, where a short time will be spent in visiting. In the spring Mr. and Mrs. Grimm will engage in farming near Madisonburg, on the farm belonging to the groom's father.

From Patsy Robertson-
Quote from page 138 of the "Springhill Cemetery Archives" book compiled by Patsy Robertson, "Wife of Dan (Daniel W.) McAdams who was a son of Obediah McAdams. She was the daughter of Thomas J Jennings and Mary Cobb Jennings. Barbara's husband, Dan, was legally her step-brother, but they didn't meet until they were grown. Dan was 8 days old when his mother died & he was reared by relatives in Mississippi. Dan's daddy, Obediah F McAdams, married Barbara Jennings' mother, Mary S Cobb Jennings. Barbara's daddy, Thomas J Jennings, was in the Confederate Army and died of pneumonia on December 13, 1862. Barbara's husband, Dan, (per McCadama Family book compiled by William Henry McAdams) states "Dan was buried along the road in Arkansas where he died while returning to Alabama from Texas by covered wagon. Barbara continued on to Alabama where she lived for the rest of her life." Barbara & Dan's children were Hilliard "Hix", Mary McAdams (Coleman) and Ida McAdams (Moore). All Barbara's children are buried in Springhill Cm. Per Ancestry.com: D. W. McAdams married Barbara Jennings July 22, 1883 in Lamar County by Justice of Peace, W B Atkins. She was a half sister to Samuel B McAdams (Row O22 Plot 14). See comments on Samuel B McAdams, Mary McAdams Coleman and Ida McAdams Moore. The 1900 census shows Barbara McAdams (head, b. Aug. 1850), Hilliard (son, b. Mar. 1885), Ida (dau. b. Oct. 1890) and Mary (dau. b. Mar. 1893).

General Notes: Child - John Wilson JENNINGS

Information told to me, Patsy Robertson, by Nannie McAdams Vails, daughter of Samuel Bennett McAdams: John "Wilson" Jennings married Lillian Phillips the first time and Sallie Coleman the second time. Lillian passsed away around 1900. Wilson's full siblings were Sarah "Jane" Jennings whose first marriage was to her cousin, Bartus McAdams, and whose second marriage was to Jim Stokes; Martha "Ann" E. Jennings who married James "Jack" Phillips; and Barbara E Jennings who met her step-brother, Dan McAdams, after she was grown; and, she and Dan married.

General Notes: Husband - Alvin Jacob Summitt

Alvin J. Summitt Was born in Greenburg, Ind. His family lived on a farm and he didn't like it. He wanted to work on the railroad so he left home when he was 16. His family were very unhappy about his leaving.,

He was a big man 6ft 2in and weighted 220 pounds when he got married. He was blond, blue eyed broad shouldered and good looking. He loved boxing and was a good friend of the famous boxer, John L. Sullivan, who often came to his house.

He met Mamie Cochron while he was a brakeman on the Old Cotton Belt Railroad, in Mattoon, Il. Her parents ran a restaurant and inn for railroaders. It was called the Dole House. Alvin and Mamie married and moved around a lot. He always worked and made good money but he drank a lot when he was young and it made life hard for Mamie and the children .

After he was about fifty he stopped drinking. Alvin died in 1945 from throat cancer. Alvin and Mamie had six children.

General Notes: Husband - Albert Lee Sutherland Jr

Albert Lee Sutherland Jr., 84, from Terry Mississippi passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 in Fort Worth Texas after declining health issues.

He was born the oldest son of Albert Lee Sutherland Sr. and Claudine Coleman Sutherland on November 30, 1933.

He loved to tell how he met his wife Carlene Coley Sutherland on his way to weekend duty with National Guard and would sing the cadence of how he marched his men. They were married October 17th, 1956. He started his career with Goodyear in 1956 where he remained until he retired in 1986. After Carlene passed in 1986, he met and married Verlyn Johnson Felts. They spent 30 years together fishing at Eagle Lake, traveling the Smokey Mountains and working in their garden. He loved to hunt and fish and brightened up telling us stories about the camp and his buddies. He was a member of Crystal Springs United Methodist Church and Wahabi Shriner.

He is survived by his oldest son Mitchell (Tammy) Sutherland of Arlington, Texas; youngest son, Mark Sutherland of Vicksburg, Mississippi; Brother Kimball (Glenda) Sutherland of Madison, MS; Sisters Dianne Still of Clinton Mississippi and Jerri (Larry) Stevens of Crystal Springs, Mississippi; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and one on the way. He is preceded in death by his parents, wives Carlene and Verlyn, his son, David Carr Sutherland and brother Claude Sutherland.

Visitation will be 2-5pm Sunday, January 28, 2018 and 9am until the 10am funeral service Monday, January 29, all at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram.

Chancellor Funeral Home handled arrangements.
