General Notes: Child - James W. CRAWFORD

JAMES W. CRAWFORD, treasurer of Henry county, was born in Barbour county in 1844. He was the eldest in a family of twelve children born to Nicholas W. and Lindsey W. (Hays) Crawford, and is a brother of A. C. Crawford, present mayor of
Dothen, whose memoir appears elsewhere in this work.

James W. Crawford grew to manhood on his father's farm. At the age of eighteen years in 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate service as a private in company H, Fifteenth Alabama infantry, commanded by Col. William C. Oates. He was assigned to the eastern army, and participated in numerous skirmishes, and fought at the battle of Gettysburg, being taken prisoner July 30, 1863. He was at first taken to Fortress Monroe and shortly after to Fort Delaware, where he spent the remainder of the war, not being released until June 15, 1865. During his prison days he managed to collect some money, which upon his liberation served a good purpose.

He in company with a number of others had to work his way home as best he could. After experiencing many hardships and a long circuitous route he reached Eufaula, July 2, 1865. Here he bought a good suit of clothes and made his way home. He was now in his twenty-first year and decided to attend school, which he did for three months. He then engaged to manage his fathers farm and did so for seven years. At the end of this time he began farming for himself and thus continued, till January, 1891, when he moved to Abbeville and bought a choice lot, on which he erected a large and commodious residence, and is now engaged in educating his children.

In 1876 Mr. Crawford was elected county commissioner, serving seven years. In 1888 he was elected county treasurer, which office he has filled up to the present time, to the general satisfaction of the public. He also filled the office of township superintendent for a number of years. He owns and manages a farm of 1,000 acres, upon which he has the best improvements, including a number of tenant houses.

In 1880 he embarked in the mercantile business at Lawrenceville, with a large stock of general merchandise, continuing
thus engaged two years. He then moved his stock of goods to his store building on his plantation, and has continued it there up to the present time. He has on his farm a steam saw-mill, grist-mill and cotton gin, which are valuable
adjuncts to his farming operations. Beside all this he has invested in property at Dothen.

In 1890 he bought out a fine business and erected for its accommodation a fine brick block. He also owns a number of residence lots. Mr.Crawford was married December 7, 1869, to Miss Anna Hays, daughter of Calvin and
Mahala C. (Whitehurst) Hays; who was born in Henry county, and is the mother of eleven children, nine of whom survive: Everett C, single and living at home Lou E, Lindsey J, Albert N, Curtiss W, James W, John L, Coda A, and Jessie O.

The mother of these children died February 1, 1892, at the age of forty-three years. Mr. Crawford, by careful management and by following correct business principles, has made his way to wealth, and, is a representative business man of
the community, in which he has risen to the top.

Agnes Hydrick Bonnette of Orangeburg died on Friday, June 21, 2013.

She was born in the Trinity community near North on Feb. 8, 1919, to John Brown and Daisy Crim Hydrick. She spent her childhood years in North and was valedictorian of her graduating class at North High School. She attended Columbia College and graduated from Columbia Business School.

Mrs. Bonnette lived in the Bolentown-Pine Hill area for 70 years following her marriage to John H. Bonnette Sr. As well as keeping books for the family farm, she was a bookkeeper for several businesses in Orangeburg County. She was very active in the community, serving as Cub Scout Den Mother, PTA president, grade mother, leader of the 4-H club and a member of FCLA. She was involved in many other civic and community organizations promoting education, history and music, always including the involvement of children and youth. At Pine Hill United Methodist Church, she was a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, pianist, choir director, UMW president, Lay Speaker and held various other offices. She frequently planned and directed programs in her church and community that were enjoyed by all.

Her recent hobbies included reading, playing the piano, and working crossword puzzles (in ink!). She enjoyed having her family near her and took great pleasure watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sports. She especially enjoyed baseball and softball and always recorded the statistics of the game in her scorebook. Her all-time favorite baseball player was Chipper Jones, and Clemson Tiger football game days found her garbed in orange from head to toe.

Mrs. Bonnette was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Stanley (Foots) Hydrick; her husband of 54 years, John H. Bonnette Sr.; their daughter, Jeanne Bonnette Wilson; and son-in-law, Robert L. Smoak. She leaves a legacy to family and friends of an unwavering faith and trust in God and her Savior.

Mrs. Bonnette will be missed by her children, Johnny and Deborah Bonnette, Bonnie and Melton Livingston, and Debbie Smoak; her grandchildren, Mike (Amy) Bonnette, Matt (Fran) Bonnette, Jay (Brandi) Livingston, Alissa (Chris) Furtick, Tate (Andi) Jameson, Tara (Greg) Livingston, Jeanna (Billy) Reynolds and David (Julianna) Smoak; 18 great-grandchildren; and her caregiver and special friend, Marie Irick.

A celebration of her life will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 24, at Pine Hill United Methodist Church; 4002 Neeses Highway, Orangeburg, followed by a time of fellowship, with the Rev. Brandon Fulmer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Mike Bonnette, Jay Livingston, Tate Jameson, Matt Bonnette, Chris Furtick, Greg Livingston, Billy Reynolds and David Smoak.

Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North (www.mcalhanyfh.com) is in charge of arrangements.

    LEXINGTON FARMER KILLED BY NEIGHBOR

L N Jeffcoat Shot to Death by M C Kirkland at Home of Latter

Lexington, Feb 3 - Leonard N Jeffcoat, a well known farmer of the Edisto section of Lexington County, was shot and mortally wounded by M Cordie Kirkland, also a farmer, about 7 o'clock Friday night. The shooting took place within 30 yards of the home of Kirkland. Jeffcoat, with five buckshot wounds in the arm and back, was rushed to the Baptist Hospital in Columbia at 3 o'clock Saturday morning. Kirkland was brought to the county jail by Sheriff Miiller Saturday afternoon.

According to statements, Jeffcoat had been visiting the home of Kirkland without Kirkland's knowledge, two nights a week for a year or longer. Friday night Kirkland lay in wait for Jeffcoat, who soon appeared in the darkness at or near a hay stack some 30 yards from the home of Kirkland. Seeing Kirkland coming, Jeffcoat began to move in the darkness and Kirkland raised his gun and fired. The gun was emptied but only the second discharge seems to have taken effect. Jeffcoat screamed in agony and went to the home of a negro some 200 yards distant, where he remained until the arrival of relatives and friends.

When seen at the county jail today and asked for a statement, Kirkland declared that he had nothing to give out at this time, that he had not employed counsel and until he had done so he would not say anything. He expressed regret over the necessity, as he said, of protecting his own home. Kirkland is 49 years of age and is one of the largest and most successful planters in the county. He has a wife and eight children, five sons and three daughters. He stands well in the community where he resides.

The dead man was about 55 years of age and leaves a widow and several children. He also had a great many friends. Since Jeffcoat died in Richland County, Sheriff Miller was immediately notified of Jeffcoat's death and left for Columbia to be present at the inquest.

This is the first homicide in Lexington County in several years in which all the parties are prominent.

General Notes: Husband - Jonathan Gay Crowder

Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Jonathan Jay Crowder, 88, of Auburn died Tuesday, July 20, 2010.

His first wife, Margaret Hodge Crowder; his parents, Joseph Jacob and Grace Gay Crowder of Wadley; and his brother, Robert Gay Crowder, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Bailey Crowder; daughters Paula Crowder Alford and husband Bill, Marsha Gay Crowder and husband Paul Wooten, all of Tampa, Fla., Jim and Melissa Lineberger of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Leigh and Douglas Sallas of Jacksonville, Fla. He was blessed with four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Jay was born in Valley on Jan. 28, 1922. He attended Columbus, Ga., schools until his family moved to Wadley. He graduated from Wadley High School at age 16 and attended Southern Union College until his senatorial appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., class of 1944. After graduation he joined the battleship Massachusetts in the Pacific theater. During World War II, he attended flight training earning the 'Gold Wings' of a Naval Aviator. His flying career led him to heavy attack, as well as air-to-air missile research and development. He was a pioneer in photoreconnaissance and mapping. As commander of the VCP-61 on Guam, his mission included flying the first A3D jet across the Pacific Ocean and updating maps of Vietnam, New Zealand and China. He continued his career becoming executive officer of the aircraft carrier Oriskany. After being promoted to captain, he became the commander of the Naval Photographic Center in Washington, D.C., where one of his duties was to oversee the official photography of the White House and Lyndon B. Johnson Library. He had the opportunity to meet presidents, their families, astronauts, and other dignitaries. After leaving Washington, he became the commander of the Naval Support Activity in New Orleans, where he became a leader in the community. Not only was he awarded the 'Keys to the City of New Orleans,' but also in recognition of service to the city, Crowder Boulevard was named in his honor. Capt. Crowder's medals include the Meritorious Service Medal (which was awarded for his service to the White House), World War II Victory Medal, American Service (one Star), American Defense, Korean Service, Asia and Pacific theater (four stars), Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign, National Defense (one star), Naval Aviator Insignia and Command at Sea Insignia. After retirement Jay and his wife Margaret traveled for a year before returning to Wadley, their hometown, where Jay served as mayor. He found great enjoyment in remodeling and restoring old homes. One home in Lafayette was placed on the Historic Registry of Homes. After moving to Auburn, he found time to earn his master's degree and began work toward his Ph.D. at Auburn University. He enjoyed bridge, tennis, golf, gardening and painting at different times in his life. Always curious, he traveled the world interested in all modes of transportation from planes, trains, and mopeds to aircraft carriers. Jay was a dedicated Rotarian and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He had perfect attendance until his illness. The Auburn Chamber of Commerce honored him with a great tribute, the Eagle Award. He was asked by Mayor Bill Ham to gather a committee to raise funds to build the Veterans Memorial on the corner of Ross and Glenn Avenues. After many mayor's breakfasts and selling memorial bricks, the Veterans Memorial became a source of pride for all veterans and all of Auburn. Capt. Crowder was a member of Auburn United Methodist Church, Saugahatchee Country Club, Military Officers Association of America, The Men's Camellia Club and the Georgia-Alabama Men's Golf Association, all of which he enjoyed to the utmost. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Academy and the Auburn University Alumni Associations.

A celebration of his life will be at 9 a.m. Friday, July 23, at Auburn United Methodist Church with 8:30 a.m. visitation in Hamil Court. Interment will be at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery at 1 p.m.

Pallbearers are Dan Christiansen, William Dillard, Jack Johnson, George Kenan, James Lineberger III, William Neville and Richard Phelan. Honorary pallbearers are the Auburn Rotary Club.
