Washington, Jan 15 [1921] - Judge Daniel Edward Hydrick, associate justice of the supreme court of South Carolina, died of pneumonia at the Raleigh hotel this morning at 1:15 o'clock. With him at the time of death was his son, Dr J L Hydrick. Mrs J M Wallace of Spartanburg, a daughter, was on her way to Washington when the end came. The remains left Washington tonight at 10:45 o'clock and interment will be at Spartanburg Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock.

Judge Hydrick came to Washington December 31 [1920]. He became ill on the first day of the year. His illness in the beginning was diagnosed as la grippe in severe form. Pneumonia developed.

In addition to the children in Washington, Judge Hydrick is survived by another son, Daniel Hydrick of Spartanburg, and a daughter, Miss Ellie Lee Hydrick of Phoenix, Arizona.

The first news of the death of Justice Hydrick was received at the supreme court rooms here from Dr John Hydrick of Washington, a son of the associate justice. The telegram contained no details, merely saying that Judge Hydrick had died in a hospital.

News of the death of the associate justice came as a great shock to his many friends and admirers here. State officials, attorneys, and many there friends expressed regret at the loss of Justice Hydrick. Many expressions of sorrow were heard on all sides yesterday afternoon and last night.

Daniel Edward Hydrick was the youngest son of Major Jacob H Hydrick and his wife, Margaret Hildebrand, a daughter of Jacob Hildebrand. He was born in Orangeburg County August 6, 1860.

Early Life on Farm
The early life of Associate Justice Hydrick was spent on the farm of his father and in attending the neighborhood schools. Opportunities were limited, but Major Hydrick sent his son to the Columbia Male Academy for a few months. This school was conducted by Captain Hugh S Thompson, who was later elected governor.

At the age of 16, Justice Hydrick entered the preparatory department of Wofford College, but did not remain in school long, being called home on account of the illness of his mother. his mother died in June of 1877 and in the fall of the same year he went back to school, entering the freshman class of Wofford College. He went through the junior class, having entered in 1877 and leaving in 1880. He was awarded the alumni medal for the highest proficiency in general scholarship in his junior year.

After leaving Wofford, Mr Hydrick went to Vanderbilt University, graduating there with the degree of A B in 1882. At Vanderbilt he was given a scholarship in Greek for proficiency in this language. He graduated with honor. He was offered a post-graduate fellowship in English and literature, but declined the fellowship.

In the fall of 1882, he was elected principal of the Darlington Male Academy, holding this position until 1885. He was admitted to the bar in the spring of 1886.

Married in Spartanburg
October 24, 1882, Justice Hydrick was married to Miss Rosa Lee, the eldest daughter of John A Lee of Spartanburg. Justice Hydrick began the practice of law in Spartanburg in the fall of 1887, soon thereafter forming a partnership with John W Carlisle. The firm of Hydrick & Carlisle continued from 1887 until 1894. In the fall of 1894 Justice Hydrick went to Union and the firm of Hydrick & Sawyer was formed, only existing for a short time, however. In 1895 Justice Hydrick and Stanyarne Wilson formed the firm of Hydrick & Wilson of Spartanburg, remaining in partnership until 1900.

From 1895 to 1900 Justice Hydrick was county attorney for Spartanburg County. In 1897 he was elected to the legislature, serving until 1905, when he was elected judge of the Seventh judicial circuit. He held the circuit judgeship until 1909 when he was elected associate justice of the supreme court by the general assembly, succeeding Ira B Jones, who had been made chief justice.

Judge Hydrick's first election to the legislature was in 1887, to fill out an unexpired term. His election as associate justice in 1909 was marked by a long fight for the position on the part of his friends.

Wife of Associate Justice Suecumbs to Illness Funeral Saturday. Spartanburg, Oct. 6.

Mrs. Rosa Lee Hydrick, aged fifty, wife of Associate Justice Daniel E. Hydrick, died at her home, corner of West Lee and Spring streets, this morning at 12.45 o'clock. While Mrs. Hydrick had been in failing health for some time past, her condition was not considered serious until last Wednesday afternoon, when she suddenly became much worse. She continued to grow weaker throughout the day Thursday and the end came early this morning.

Mrs. Hydrick was the daughter of Major and Mrs. John A. Lee, who were pioneer citizens of Spartanburg. Mrs. Lee, before her marriage, was Miss Rosanna Briggs, of Union county. Major Lee died about, ten years ago, and Mrs. Lee died when Mrs. Hydrick was but a girl.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Hydrick is survived by one brother, Mayor J. B. Lee, and four children: Mrs. Monroe Wallace, Miss Ellie Lee Hydrick, John Lee Hydrick and Daniel E. Hydrick, Jr.

The death of Mrs. Hydrick occasioned great sorrow among her many friends in Spartanburg and throughout the State. Perhaps the chief characteristics of Mrs. Hydrick was her devotion to her home life and her untiring efforts to care for the wants of others. She was a woman noted for her unselfishness and was always eager to aid those in distress or to extend a kind word to those in trouble.

The funeral services will be held at the residence, on West Lee street, tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock and will be conducted by the Rey. R. S. Truesdale, pastor of Central Methodist church, of which Mrs. Hydrick was a devoted member.

Started Converse College in 1902, earned B.A. in 1904 and M.A. in 1905. She then moved to Arizona for the dry climate to help with the cure of tuberculosis. She was a graduate nurse and taught in the schools of Arizona for 50 years, earning the prestigious Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1957 from the General Federation of Women's Clubs. She received recognition in both Arizona and her home state of SC when the Associated Press in a Spartanburg, S.C. newspaper wrote this article:

"A Spartanburg native, who has taught from Physics to Russian, was named Thursday as teacher of the year by the General Federation of Women's Club...Mrs. Ellie Lee Kahl, who speaks 11 languages, also won a trip to Scandinovia, a land whose language she does not know.

A registered nurse, Mrs. Kahl is the former Ellie Lee Hydrick.

Mrs. Kahl, whose husband, Carl, is a sculptor and artist, started out as a physical chemist, but turned to teaching other subjects when she had to go out west, because she had contracted tuberculosis. She had no children of her own. "My children died," she said.

At 69, she still teaches six hours a day, has about 280 students a year, takes on a summer session and is organizing adult classes now."

Excerpts from the Arizona Republic, Phoenix, of 7 Mar 1959:
"Her straight A days in college days was followed by study at the University of Havana, and the Sarbonne in Paris. Then Columbia University, the University of Nevada, and Arizona State, all long after she had received her master's degree.

"Mrs. Kahl speaks 11 languages, holds credentials in Chemistry, physics, Latin, French, Spanish, English, and History and was a registered nurse"

Obituary below is incorrect, I believe, if Onan's Book on Major Jacob Haysmith Hydrick's descendants is accurate which it should be as he was "closer" to the actual history. If we believe this obit is really D.E.III, then how could D.E.IV have been born in 1947? So, I believe this obit fits Daniel Edward IV. Per the book, it was D.E. IV who started the carriage company. Also remember that Onan only went up to 1975 -DMH

Follow the Leader
By Stacey Hydrick
After the birth of our sixth child, as they put her in my arms and my entire being flooded with post-delivery euphoria, people in the room began saying, "OK, that's it, three boys, three girls, y'all are done." Just as they had been doing since our first two children were born (14 months apart), others were trying to plan, or more correctly, limit, the size of our family. It didn't work very well. We now have six children and our oldest is eight years old.

You see, my husband and I believe in the teachings of the Catholic Church. We see children as blessings, gifts. You may say, well, so do I, but I just don't want that many gifts. It isn't a numbers game, though. Whether you have none or 10, it is about letting the Creator be in charge of creation. God sent His Son that we would follow Him, not lead. He sent Jesus to show us that love is exemplified through self-sacrifice and servitude and by complete abandonment to God's will.

Many times people have said to us, "Oh, I wanted another one, but my husband wouldn't let me," or "I wanted six, but my wife said no more after three." I believe this stems from the birth control mentality seeping into the marriage vocation. For in marriage we are supposed to give ourselves completely to one another, through God. We must examine our consciences, especially when one spouse desires a child and the other does not. We must ask, why does the Church teach this? What does the Gospel say? What are my true reservations, finances, emotional capabilities, health, fear, selfishness, etc.? (Yes, my husband and I have actually done this, believe it or not.) When we are honest with ourselves, giving God our worries and fears, He will lead us to the truth. If that truth you fear is that God does want you to have one or two more children, it may be a struggle. It may be extremely difficult. But one thing is certain; God always promises rewards that far outweigh the sacrifice. There would have been no resurrection without the crucifixion.

On a lighter note, often we simply limit ourselves and God. Most people say to us, "I could never do it. You and David are so patient and calm." First of all, we're not. We just try not to lose it in public. Secondly, we constantly learn to have more patience as we have more children. Otherwise, we would be nuts. God doesn't require perfection BEFORE you have children. If that were so, no one would have any. God gives you your children to help you become better people.
Another issue is timing. We can all see things our children cannot, due to their age, height, etc. It is the same with us and God. We only see right in front of, or behind us. God sees everything. Birth control's focus is on me or us in the here and now. Yes, maybe it is a really inconvenient time for you, even horrible, financially. But we cannot see the future. What if your father is going to die in two years? You may be cheating him, and your son, out of fishing together.

Perhaps you are debating having that third child. Think about child number three, Fred Smith. How many people would be affected without this one person? Strange to think, isn't it, that FedEx would not exist? Or maybe a large family sounds neat, butΠPonder Fr. Vincent Capodonno, a priest who rescued numerous soldiers in Vietnam before losing his own life, trying to protect and aid a wounded Marine. He was the tenth child, born into a poor, immigrant family. Thus, when we take the lead in planning our families, we have no idea what we may alter in the future. We cannot foresee how many lives may be impacted by our decision. Yet, God knows, and that is why He must lead.

As a poor man in Louisiana once said, "One more child, it's just another bowl of gumbo and when you got a big pot of gumbo, it ain't no big thing." In other words, trust that God you believe in! God will not give you children and then abandon you. You will sacrifice, and He will bless your marriage more than you can know. You will suffer to bring them into the world, and your children will bring immeasurable joy. You will be sleepy and stressed, then you will find a toy otter or a chicken drummie bone in your shoe. You will be bored from staying home and then get spontaneous, live entertainment. You will lose your temper and learn humility. You will have a horrible day, and someone will put his arms around your neck and tell you that he loves you, and you are the best in the world. And when we all get to heaven, some special souls will be there because you and your spouse said "yes" to God.

- Stacey and her husband, David, parishioners at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Cordova, are the happy and proud parents of their six children, Hawken, Jude, Caleb, Susie, Josie and Lily. This article was originally printed in the Diocese of Memphis Natural Family Planning newsletter.

General Notes: Husband - Dennis Morgan Hydrick

Denny's career skill was that of electrician which began in 1970 as an apprentice with the IBEW in Jackson, MS. He became a journeyman electrician in 1975 after finishing apprenticeship school as Apprentice of the Year.

He and an uncle, Robert Hawkins, formed H & H Electric during the worst economic times of the late 1970s. When work got slow, they became superintendents for Bechtel Construction first in Colombia, South America. When back in the USA, Denny had superintendent jobs in Nevada, California, Florida and finally, Pennsylvania where he met his second wife, Bernadette. He had to work as an electrician again in order to remain in PA as Bechtel wanted him to travel.

He was hired by General Electric Aerospace in 1988 on their construction team. Denny applied for two reasons: 1) an opportunity for advancement and 2) to go back to college...he was able to attain both.

Denny enrolled in the Electrical Engineering program at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA because he was working second shift with the construction crew. After two quarters (Drexel did not use semesters), he was promoted to project coordinator which was a day job. He went back to Drexel in the Fall, 1989 in their Evening College. He also changed his major to Construction Managment as this was more in line with what he wanted to do rather than engineering. He graduated cum laude in 1994 as President of his Senior Class.

Promotion opportunities came at work as he was quickly promoted to supervisor over maintenance and custodial in a special program/facility on the Valley Forge campus. Soon after he became maintenance supervisor over all facilities in the Valley Forge/King of Prussia area for GE Aerospace which was soon sold to Martin-Marietta (later becoming Lockheed-Martin Aerospace). While supervisor, he instituted the first comprehensive preventive maintenance program and purchased an upgraded, state-of-the-art Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for which he did the majority of setup and data population, even assisting other Facility departments in Colorado, DC/Virginia, California and Arizona. He also instructed company-wide classes on Microsoft Excel and Access. He was promoted to Maintenance Manager in 1999. Force included 45 employees and a budget of about $6 million.

He was a member of the International Facility Manager Association (IFMA) earning their Certified Facility Manager (CFM) designation.

He was also a member of The Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE) earning their Certified Professional Maintenance Manager (CPMM) and Certified Plant Engineer (CPE) designations. Denny was also an instructor for exam preparation classes for each certification. He was instrumental in re-activating the AFE Greater Philadelphia Chapter in 2010 serving as President until 2023. He also held several national board postions including Region I Vice-President, National President, Immediate Past President and Finance Chair.

Denny also served on his township's Municipal Authority for over 10 years and, after moving to an over-55 development, served on the Recreation Board and finally the HOA Board of Directors.

Opinion's on prospects.
This is a section devoted to comments on players looking at UA. SO if you have a comment on some player or anything about recruiting send it to me and I will put it on here.

Just to let you know of an OL (center) from Copiah-Lincoln CC being looked at by Ole Miss and MSU -- Joey Hydrick, 6'2", 275# with 5.2 speed but with incredible quickness and strength. He gets off the ball and is in the defensive backfield as quickly as the quarterback on sneaks. He wasn't recruited out of HS heavily because he lettered in four sports all four years and played every down on football -- he even punted and handled the placekicking. Now that he is a one-way player and committed to one sport to make or break, his potential is starting to be realized. He just might be worth a look at-- as Gene Swindoll said on his Ole Miss All Sports Recruiting page ... "this kid's been a secret until now, but look for more teams to get into the hunt..." Denny

10/14/97 - Co-Lin CC's outstanding center Joey Hydrick is being recruited by Ole Miss (leader, more playing time the first year), Miss State (feels they may want to redshirt him) and now Wake Forest. He will be taking an official visit to Wake Forest. From what I was told, Wake Forest is going to offer him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
At my home in PA, I received a call from a Villanova Univ. football coach showing interest in Joey. Also, received a call from Mississippi State University Head Baeeball Coach, Ron Polk, inquiring as to Joey's plans. I told him Joey had already signed a football scholarship with Copiah-Lincoln CC. Coach Polk asked if he'd play baseball there also which I wasn't sure of. He said if he did, they'd keep an eye on him.
THE ZONE
Like father, like daughter
Two Albany veterinarians are more than just colleagues they're family.
BÁRBARA RIVERA HOLMES <mailto:barbara.rivera.holmes@albanyherald.com>
ALBANY She's been working at the veterinary practice since 1986 when she was 11 years old, and the decor in the waiting area hasn't changed much since then.
Yet, said Haley Hydrick, there's nothing like home, where the University of Georgia wallpaper screams out "We're alumni!"
The Albany veterinarian has been a partner at her father's 35-year-old animal hospital since she returned from her Texas internship about a year ago.
"He's a pretty good boss," said 28-year-old Haley Hydrick of her father, veterinarian Dick Hydrick. "Sometimes (he has) a hard time distinguishing between (me) being his daughter and being his business partner."
The perks of working with her father: "He buys me lunch," she said with a smile.
Phyllis Hydrick, Dick's wife and Haley's mother, is glad to have her daughter home. She said she's seen a good change in her husband's attitude. Now he'll even take some time off, she said of her "workaholic" husband.
"He enjoys her new ideas and she his experience," said Phyllis Hydrick. "He loves having her work with him."
Haley Hydrick always thought about being a vet, but it wasn't until she was doing her undergrad work at UGA that she decided to pursue veterinary medicine. She got a bachelor of science in animal science at the Athens school and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Ala.
"I don't know what the neatest part is (of working with Haley)," said Dick Hydrick. "It's good. It's fantastic ... just having somebody to carry on."
Being around animals was normal for Dick Hydrick, who grew up on a Mitchell County farm.
"I'd say probably early high school/late grade school I knew I was going to give it a try," he said. "(Back then) it probably wasn't as popular as it is now.
"Thank goodness. I would have never made it," he said lightheartedly.
He and Ellen Gardner set up the Albany practice in 1968. They have been at their 1803 E. Oglethorpe Blvd. building since 1970.
The two started school together in 1956. He graduated from UGA in 1960 with a B.S. in animal husbandry and received his DVM from there in 1964.
Aside from the Albany practice (Gardner & Hydrick Animal Hospital), they have one in Sylvester (Gardner & Hydrick Veterinarians) and will open one in Leesburg (Leesburg Animal Hospital). Jennifer Daniels is the fourth vet in the practices.
Hydrick said the field has "come a long way in the last 40 years," with the advances in medicine allowing doctors to do many more in-house procedures than before.
"It's just so much more convenient," Hydrick said.
Also, people have more disposable income now, he said, and so they spend more "looking after their pets than they used to."
Being an established Albany practice, the experienced veterinarian said some of his patients' owners are children and grandchildren of original clientele.
Dick and Haley Hydrick have an obvious sense of comfort when working together.
She holds Ristra's leg and her father inserts the needle into the vein. Then he stands back and watches over her shoulder as she cleans the dog's teeth.
She's used to her father watching over her. It doesn't make her nervous at all, instead she talks and smiles and laughs all the while concentrated on Ristra's teeth and gum line.
Miranda Baucam, who works the front desk at the Albany practice, sees the Hydricks day to day. Of their team: "It's as good as the rest of them."
"They don't ever have any problems, or spats or anything like that," Baucam said. "They both get along well."
When the doctors have a difference in opinion over a case, Dick Hydrick is usually the one to back off, she said. He said he'll walk out of the room so she can learn on her own.
"There's a safety net there," said the young vet of working under her father's wing. "But yet I want to make him proud."
The Hydrick family has always been a close one, they said. Hydrick's eldest daughter, 30-year-old Holly Waldrep, is a physical therapist in town. His wife of 35 years, Phyllis, works for the Advocacy Resource Center in Albany, serving people with disabilities.
The family has four dogs and 20 horses, which are kept at their Mitchell County farm. Dick Hydrick said it's quite a sight to watch Haley ride horses.
The vets work mostly on cats, dogs and horses.
When area horses were diagnosed with West Nile virus in 2003, the five horses that Haley treated at the Sylvester office survived.
"We're here to make the animal kingdom a happier place," she said.
Though she's a vet, she never forgets she's her father's daughter first.
"I do definitely feel like a daughter, because everybody asks me, 'When are you going to let your daddy retire?' "
Dick Hydrick laughed at that.
"She's going to pay me my retirement," he said, his eyes twinkling at his daughter. "Somebody's got to."
Gay Nichols Hydrick passed away at her home in Mission Hills at the age of 101 on June 2nd.
The daughter of the Rev. Gay and Mrs. Edna Nichols of Anita, Iowa, she had been trained in speech and drama since early childhood and followed those interests all of her life, producing and writing plays and pageants for churches and schools, as well as publishing books of colonial history and her family. After the early death of her father and graduation from Anita High School, she came to Long Beach to work in her uncle's business and attend college. A horse back rider, Gay rode in local events and parades with the Long Beach Lancerettes. She won her 200 pin in League Bowling when she was high scorer for the evening at 220 in a Shell Oil Co. tournament of all men save a single girls' team.When the Ammunition Depot was built in Seal Beach at the onset of World War II, Gay became an employee only to discover the office was still operating on World War I plans and procedures. She rewrote them to meet World War II standards, and they were copied by other stations.
In 1946, she married Lt. Donald Hydrick. They were the parents of two daughters. Post war, they moved to Pasadena where Gay was the drama director for the Oneonta Congregational Church, a center for church drama groups in Hollywood.In 1957, the family moved to La Jolla where Gay established the D.A.R. Children's group and was a founding member of the Torrey Pines Christian Church. She was a devotee of the game of bridge, playing at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club's duplicate game. Her daughters were in the first class of La Jolla Country Day School when the school was housed in little cottages in the village.In 1963, the family moved to Mission Hills. The home was a center of much entertaining as Gay was known as a gifted hostess. They became active members of the Mission Hills Congregational Church where Mrs. Hydrick directed drama productions for the children. A gifted writer, she became a beloved correspondent whose letters delighted friends and relatives everywhere.
She is survived by two daughters, Gay St. Clair and Elizabeth Kelley (James), four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She will be buried beside her husband at Miramar National Cemetery.
MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- Senior Airman Juddson Hydrick, 341st Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal team member, was in front of a Redbox looking at movies with his family at a Walmart center in Great Falls, Montana, Aug. 19, 2018, when he looked up and saw a man with a chokehold on a female Subway employee. The man held a knife to her throat.
Hydrick further assessed the scene and watched as the man tried to drag the woman from the front of the store further into the building.
"I knew I had to do something," Hydrick said. "I yelled at him to 'Calm down!' and to 'Drop the knife!' I backed away from my family and circled far away from them. He let go of her pretty much immediately."
She ran away quickly, and while it appeared she was safe, the story didn't end there, Hydrick said.
"After she broke away, he took a couple of steps towards me. He looked to be about in his 50s, and clearly was unstable," he said.
"I didn't want to charge him because he was holding a knife, but I knew I needed to keep his attention on me," Hydrick said.
"Then more people realized what was going, and people started calling, 'He's got a knife, get back!' The man stopped coming towards me and began to walk through the store. I started to follow him and two guys came with me. He kept waiving the knife and ranting at people - at one point he got real close to grabbing a Walmart employee," Hydrick said.
"Very suddenly one of the guys I was following him with, grabbed his arm without the knife and swung him down on the ground. Me and the other guy jumped on him. I pinned his knife arm and pried the knife from him," he said.
"Once I had the knife away from him, I folded it up and we got off of him," Hdyrick said. "Then the guy left and went over to the entrance, but by then the police had arrived. He had this really crazy look on his face."
"I watched as the police officer subdued him with a Tazer, and I gave the knife to a Walmart employee," he said.
"I went outside to check on the girl, and she was dripping blood off her arm and already talking to the police," he said. "I learned she was OK, and at that point I was ready to get my family out of there."
"This could have been an entirely different scenario," he said. "And it happened fast. Be aware of your surroundings. Simple situational awareness kept the woman from being hurt a lot worse."
"I scan rooms faster and more often now when I'm out in town, even more so than I did before," Hydrick said.
"I just saw that she needed help. A young girl in her mid 20s. I couldn't just let him go back to her," he said. "I didn't know if he was zoned in on her or what."
Hydrick said he later learned the woman had likely been targeted, and that the man was seen regularly at the shopping center.
"Initially I thought he had a scalpel, but then found out it was Swiss army knife. I sustained a small cut when getting the knife from him," Hydrick said.
The Hydrick family left the shopping center after the incident, but they did not rent a Redbox movie that dramatic day.
A couple of days later, Hydrick made his statement at the Great Falls Police Department.
