General Notes: Husband - Andrew Jackson Hydrick

All notes are by Ora Hydrick Smith

Following "Sequence of Events" for research purposes:

Cheryl Haynie (researcher) claims Edward Hydrick came to Texas in 1860/70's with foster parents (no name of foster parents), looking for brother. Yet, another researcher, Willie Bunt records that it was another Andrew Jackson Hydrick of Alabama who had a brother Edward, and that it was Edward that went to Texas, with Andrew Jackson Hydrick went to Texas to find him, but not being able to do so, and returned to Alabama. Records show this may be the correct version. That an Andrew Jackson Hydrick, born 25 Dec. 1857, in Alabama, parents unknown, married and lived in Alabama.

TIME LINE OF EVENTS FOR ANDREW JACKSON "JACK" HYDRICK:

1880 Williamson County, Texas Census - Jackson Hydrum living with a widow, Emily Ford and her three year old son, Daniel Ford. Jackson is 18 years old, a farm hand, and also claims to be an orphan. Born in Alabama, and claims parents to have been born in Mississippi.

1885, May 4 - Son born, Joseph Henry Hydrick. Born in Roundrock, Williamson, Texas. (claims Belle to be his mother.)

1885, 20 September - married Belle Flint, who (according the census) was born in Illinois.

1887'ish - possibly daughter born (according to records of Ernest Hydrick).

1890 - daughter born, Annie Hydrick born in Texas.

Jan. 19, 1899 - possible date that George Neverson Hydrick was born. (See military records - all birthdate information recorded as 1899.)

1899 - Jack found in the Houston Directory, listed as a teamster employed by Butlers Brickyard. Boarding at 3317 Washington Ave., Houston. (Can't be sure of month that directory was recorded.)

1900,Jan.19 - possibly son born, George Neverson Davidson Hydrick (my Grandfather). He claims he was born on this date, in Galveston, Galveston, Texas, but I have found no proof, thus far. Claims Emma Butterfras to be his mother. His military records show that he was born 19 January 1899. (see notes for George Neverson Hydrick)

Summer of 1900 - Census shows Emma Butterfras living at family home with her parents and brother, Paul Butterfras and sister-in-law and their two Butterfras children. Also two of Emma's siblings. No George Neverson Davidson Hydrick. No Jack Hydrick living with them. No Hydrick's found in 1900 Census in all of Texas.???

1900, June 14 - Married Florence Patillo (who was born Feb 1881 in Texas). Three months later hurricane hits. Could Florence have died? Not on record of those who died in hurricane, but 100's of people where not on the list. No trace of her in any other records found thus far.

1900 - Houston Directory shows Jack as a teamster employed by H.P. McLaughlin. Boarding at 818 Lakin, Houston.

1901, July 2 - Married Emma Butterfras (born July 1881, I believe in Texas). Married by minister of 1st German Methodist Church, in Houston, Texas.

1902, Mar. 20 - Son born, Ernest Albert Andrew Hydrick, to Jack and Emma Butterfras Hydrick. (date given to Ernest by mother, but all records show otherwise, see Sept. 5, 1903)

1902 - Houston Directory shows Jack living at 2209 Washington St., Houston.

1903 - Houston Directory shows Jack as bricklayer living at 2413 Center, Houston.

1903, Sept. 5 - Possibly real date of Ernest Albert Andrew Hydrick's birth. The state records show this date, and so do school records. Ernest reports that his mother always told him his birth date was March 20, 1902, which he believed almost his entire life until he found the records down at City Hall showing differently. Birth record shows Jack and Emma living at 2600 Center St. (NOTE: I have tried to find this birth record he claims was at City Hall, but have not been able to do so.)

1905, June 25 - Jack Hydrick dies at Butler Switch, Bastrop Co., Texas. Death certificate does not list a residence or age...Although there are spaces for this information on the death certificate. Cause of death listed as congestion. Family knowledge reports that Emma was living in Houston at time of death of Andrew in Butler Switch, and that she was pregnant.

1905 - Houston Directory has Emma Hydrick (Mrs. Andrew J.), listed alone. Residence 2218 Carr, Houston. (1907-1916 Houston Directory shows NO Hydrick's)

TIMELINE OF CHILDREN OF JACK HYDRICK:
1905, December 9 - Joseph Henry Hydrick married to Lillie "Kate" Foust (Fouse) in Georgetown, Williamson County, Texas.

1905 - son born to Jack and Emma Hydrick. My Grandfather said this child was never talked about. I do not know if the son was named. I have found no record of this birth thus far. May have been put up for adoption. May have died, but Granddad's wife, Alice, says he did not die, and was given to someone else to raise. Owen Elmer Hydrick, grandson to Andrew Jackson Hydrick records that the baby was born on Christmas Eve, 1905, and that he was the son of Howard Hughes, Sr. He makes claim that in fact the baby born to Emma was Howard Hughes, Jr.

1906 - Emma takes her two boys (George and Ernest) and moves to Galveston to live with her brother, Paul Butterfras. Grandad states he grew up mostly living with Uncle Paul

1908, Jan 07 - Daughter, Pearl born to Joseph H. and Kate Hydrick. Born in Pflugerville, Williamson Co., Texas.

1910 Census - Williamson County shows Joseph H. Hydrick, age 26 head of household. Wife Kate, age 24, married for 5 years. Joseph claims he does not know the birth place of his father and that his mother was born in Illinois. He is a farmer. One daughter, Pearl, age 2 born in Texas. (Census taken 19 April, 1910.) Microfilm #1,375,610 Mesa Family History Center, AZ.

1910 Census - Travis County (area-Red River) shows Annie Hydrick, age 19 living with her uncle, Philip Fagan, age 42 and his wife, Mattie, age 35. The Fagan's had been married 13 years. Philip was born in Ohio and his parents born in Ireland. Annie claims her father's place of birth unknown and her mother was born in Illinois. She is working as a sales clerk for a retail store. Mattie Fagan is a Flint, and the sister of Belle. So, Annie is living with her aunt and uncle here.

1917 - Galveston Directory shows Emma Hydrick at 39th and Broadway, Galveston.

1917 - Houston Directoy shows George Hydrick, molder at Dickson Car Wheel Co. He had rooms at 3505 Raymond. (George Neverson Hydrick says this is not him, that he never worked for Dickson Car Wheel Co.)

1918 - Galveston Directory show George Hydrick (Grandad) working at Model Laundry. Living at 25th and Church St., Galveston. (Grandad says this is not him, he says he never worked for Model Laundry.)

1919, July 11 - George Hydrick sworn into U.S. Marines. Not writing to mother, but is writing to his Uncle Paul Butterfras. Left home without telling his mother where he was going.

1919, Aug. 15 - Emma Butterfras Hydrick dies of cervical cancer. George does not come home for the funeral.

Other information:

Uncle Ernest Hydrick wrote in a letter to my father and myself that he had no idea he had a half-brother until he got a call from Klein Funeral Home in Tomball, Texas in 1960 advising him that his half-brother died. Uncle Ernest was shocked and went to the viewing out of curiousity. He doesn't say who he met there or if he talked to anyone, but he did say the half-brother looked just like my Grandad. Ernest and my Grandad do not look alike. Emma Butterfras Hydrick does not look like anyone in my family, but Ernest does look like her. He also states in his letters that he started doing some investigating and found his birthdate to be different than his mother had always told him it was. He claims Georges birthdate as right, Jan 19, 1900. He said that he also found out he had 2 half-sisters and a cousin in Marshall, Texas and a cousin in Corpus Cristi, Texas. He said one half sister lived in Magnolia (which I believe he was mistaking as a sister...it was Joseph's daughter, Pearl Hydrick Lee) and one half sister lived in Gidding, Texas. Then another letter said maybe one of the half sisters lived in Paige; and that one of the sisters married a Bohemian fellow. No names given. He listed his fathers name as Jack Ahern Andrew Hydrick.?? He mentions a friend of the family gave him alot of information. He doesn't mention who that was. May have been Emma's second husband (or boyfriend). Also, Uncle Ernest states he found something he didn't like and destroyed his records and doesn't want to discuss it. He wants to forget all about it and live the future, which is basically what my Grandfather said, too.

Further research shows an Isom Hydrick living in Marshall, Texas during the time Uncle Ernest wrote his letters. My father contacted Isom (Bill) Hydrick and found out his family was from Arkansas and had Cherokee blood in the family. I have found no proof of being connected to this family, but it's possible. There was an Andrew Hydrick from Arkansas born in 1842, who served in the war, but he died in the war. Isom's father was also named Isom, born in Arkansas.

The female Hydrick child I recorded as being born 1887 to Jack Hydrick is an assumption on my part. Since Uncle Ernest said there were two half-sisters I assumed she would be born about then because there is 5 years in age difference between Annie and Joseph Hydrick. But perhaps there was only one sister, Annie, and the other he was mistaken about, and it was Pearl Hydrick Lee that he was thinking of??

I don't know where my grandfathers name came from. George Neverson Davidson Hydrick. Seems like 2 last names perhaps? I do not find any of the names in the Butterfras line. throughout his life he went as George Neverson Hydrick without the Davidson. Through Uncle Ernest's research, he claims his name had Davidson included.

Looking at Jack's signature on his marriage license to Emma Butterfras, he may have been an uneducated man. The signature looks very child-like and has spelled the name A Hydrik. And it looks like he signed his marriage certificate to Belle Flint with a "mark" only.

Alabama line:
The Jackson Hydrum in 1880, Williamson County, Texas Census claims he was born in Alabama. 1870 Alabama Census' have no Hydrums, but do have Hydricks. Two may fit, one is Andrew, age 7, born in Alabama, living in the household with John and Cornelia Cunningham in Montgomery County (possibly city of Montgomery). John Cunningham is a state judge and wealthy. Also living in his household are; his 2 little children; Mary Smith, a domestic servant; John Gusin, butcher; Adolphius Gusin, fisherman; Ellen Hydrick age 27, seamstress; Macon Hydrick age 24, policeman; Morgan Hydrick age 18, housekeeper. Are Ellen, Morgan, Macon and Andrew siblings? Or Ellen could be Andrew's mother. Morgan could be married to Macon, but if she was, she would be too young to have a 7 year old son.
In Selma, Dallas County, Alabama, there is a Margaret Hydrick, age 38, seamstress, living with Sarah Cook, age 37, seamstress. Sarah Cook has a female child named Missouri, and Margaret Hydrick has a male child, Andrew, age 7, born in Alabama. She also has a female child, Mattie, age 13, born in Alabama. No males as head of household. Seems there are two females living together with their three children. Is Margaret widowed or never married? Considering there are two children, perhaps she is widowed? Could she have passed away after this and left her two children orphans?

General Notes: Wife - Belle Flint

NAME: Isabelle?

BIRTH PLACE: In 1910 Texas, Williamson County Census, Joseph Henry Hydrick claims his mother was born in Illinois.

POSSIBLE SCENERIO: Perhaps Belle died in childbirth at the birth of George in 1899? Andrew took the baby and went to Houston for some unknown reason...work, or perhaps he already knew Florence Patillo and wanted to see if she would marry him? At this point, Joseph would have been 14 years old, possibly a daughter of Belle's and Andrew's would have been about 12 years old, and Annie would have been 9 years old. Would Andrew have left the children with the Fagan's at this point? Wouldn't he have left the baby? Did he have family in Houston? Did he go to Houston and get work and then came back for the kids? It's all a mystery!

1st Pres. Church, Pastors Church Records, Travis County, TX - FHL Film #364,115. No Flint, Fagan, or Hydrick.

General Notes: Child - George Neverson Davidson HYDRICK

BIRTH: No birth certificate ever found. Birth date listed on Social Security application, (April 9, 1937), and death certificate (13 May 1990) as 19 January, 1900. Birth date listed on military records (Parris Island July 6, 1919) as 19 January 1899.

OCCUPATION: Aviation Electrical Inspector.

SOCIAL SECURITY APPLICATION: April 9, 1937. Living at 1711 Airline Drive, Houston, Texas. Social Security# (on file)

PARENTS: On a Social Security Application, which George Neverson Hydrick filled out 4/9/1937, he listed his father as Charles C. Hydrick (deceased), and mother as Emma Butterfras (deceased). This is very confusing. While living, George always told his family that his father was Andrew Jackson "Jack" Hydrick, and his mother was Emma Butterfras Hydrick. Because of dates regarding the birth of George Neverson Hydrick, being 1899, or 1900, Andrew Jackson Hydrick was supposedly married to Belle Flint at this time, marrying Florence Patillo in June 1900, and Emma Butterfras in July 1901. (See notes of George's father, Andrew Jackson Hydrick.)

BTW: This is the first and only time I have found a Charles C. Hydrick listed as father of George. I am not sure where this came from, or who Charles C. Hydrick is? I have found records showing Andrew Jackson Hydrick to be married to Emma Butterfras, and Emma Butterfras was certainly the woman who raised George Hydrick.

MILITARY: Service Number 153498, July 11, 1919, Houston, Texas. Another Service Number 277446, November 17, 1939, Portsmouth, Virginia. Military Records requested by Jeanette Jackson (George's daughter) under the number of 153498 show that George Neverson Hydrick became a Private in the Marine Corps on July 11, 1919. Copies of his Service-Record Book were sent to Christi Hydrick at the request of Jeanette Hydrick Jackson, who sent them to Ora Smith, who holds those copies in file. As stated above, in these documents his birthdate is listed multiple times as January 19, 1899, and being born in Houston, Texas. He enlisted in the Marines for a term of 4 years. Embarked on USS Kittery at Charleston, S.C., Sept. 25, 1919. Sailed same date for foreign tropical shore service in Cuba. Arrived and disembarked at Nerwita (?) Cuba, Sept. 29, 1919 (signed Major Turner). Embarked on board USS Henderson at Guananamo Bay, Cuba, March 1, 1921, sailed same date, arrived at Hampton Roads, Virginia, March 1921, disembarked March 21 (?), 1921 (signed Capt. Maurice Holmes). Extra and Special Duty Details - Corral 11/16/19-2/29/20; Radio Mechanic 3/1/20-3/27/20; Orderly 4/1/20-5/10/20; Messman 12/31/20-1/20/21; Labor 5/21/21-11/12/21.

Feb. 24, 1931, Application for Certificate in Lieu of Discharge...showing George applying for a certificate in lieu of lost or destroyed discharge certificate, and request that it be sent to him at the following address (left blank). Lists his birthdate as 19 Jan 1899, with a personal description of his appearance. Goes on to state that he was discharged 31 December 1921 at the Marine Barracks, Navy Yard in Washington D.C.. His discharge certificate was lost or destroyed on or about December 12, 1930 under the following conditions - Misplaced or lost to Civil Service Commission.

March 1, 1935, An Honorable Discharge letter by special order of the Major General Commandant for his (George's) own convenience, December 31, 1921, at Washington, D.C., a Private, with character "excellent". (signed L. D. Hermle, Major, Asst. Adjutant and Inspector, U. S. Marine Corps.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
LITTLE ROCK - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bobbye Hydrick Garner Floyd, who departed this life on Dec. 9, 2025, in Little Rock. Bobbye Jean Hydrick was born in Memphis, to Robert Flynn and Edith Holcomb Hydrick, on July 14, 1936. She spent her early years living near her father's Red and White Store outside Parkin, Ark., in the Togo Community before her father purchased a farm at the end of World War II. She did many things, but working as a farm girl was not one of them. Although she did learn to drive in an old army jeep in the alfalfa field.
Bobbye graduated from Parkin High School, where she was on the homecoming court and Homecoming Queen in her senior year. She managed the girls' basketball team and earned the nickname of "lightning" from Coach Norris for her slowness.
Bobbye was a teacher, mother, and grandmother. She attended Memphis State University, now, University of Memphis, before transferring to Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. She graduated from ASU with a degree in English and was certified to teach secondary education. She taught junior high, senior high, adult education, and alternative school, and was an adjunct professor at Pulaski Technical College. She held a lifetime certification in the State of Arkansas. She was a tutor at Sylvan Learning Center for over 10 years.
In 1958, she married James Richard Garner and had two children, Janet Lynn Garner and James Hydrick Garner. She lived in Wynne, where she played pitch and bridge. She was involved with the Wynne Band Booster and served as president of that organization. She was also a Cub Scout den mother.
In 1982, she moved from Wynne to Jonesboro, where she met and married Joseph Parker Floyd. She and Joe were active in the arts community, and she also served on the Arkansas Sesquicentennial Committee for Craighead County before moving to Little Rock. She enjoyed traveling, entertaining, and being entertained. Her mother was a great cook, but Bobbye preferred eating out to preparing meals herself. Lunch or an early dinner with her granddaughters and friends was one of her favorite activities. After Joe's death, she was active in Faith United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school and conducted bible study groups. She also served on Good Shepherd's Resident Council.
She was blessed with four granddaughters: Jett, Greylin, Reagan, and Audrey, and became Baboo. She loved spending time with her granddaughters and hearing about what was happening in their lives.
Bobbye was predeceased by her parents, aunts, and uncles, and both her husbands. She was also predeceased by her blind cocker spaniel, Riley, whom she always referred to as Little Rowdy, even though he weighed over forty pounds.
She is survived by her two children, Janet Garner Baugher (Mike) and Jim H. Garner; her four granddaughters, Jett Pieroni (John David); her first great-granddaughter, Garner Mae Pieroni; Greylin Garner, Reagan Garner Johnson (Paul), and Audrey Garner; her stepson, Joe Floyd, and his sister, Teri Floyd Wright.
There will be a private burial. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Bobbye Floyd's life on Jan. 7, 2026, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Faith United Methodist Church, 9820 W. Markham St., Little Rock, Ark., 72205.
"JOSIAH FRANKLIN,
and
ABIAH his Wife,
lie here interred.
They lived lovingly together in wedlock
fifty-five years.
Without an estate, or any gainful employment,
By constant labor and industry,
with God's blessing,
They maintained a large family
comfortably,
and brought up thirteen children
and seven grandchildren
reputably.
From this instance, reader,
Be encouraged to diligence in thy calling,
And distrust not Providence.
General Notes: Wife - Abiah Folger
When Abiah Folger was born on 15 August 1667, in Nantucket, Dukes, New York Colony, British Colonial America, her father, Peter Folger, was 50 and her mother, Mary Morrell, was 47. She married Josiah Franklin in 1689. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 4 daughters. She died on 8 May 1752, in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America, at the age of 84, and was buried in Granary Burying Ground, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
ABIAH FOLGER was the only child of Peter Folger born at Nantucket, as 'his two sons and other six daughters were born at Martha's Vineyard previous to his arrival' on the more southern island. She was born August 15, 1667, and died in Boston about 1752. By her marriage to Josiah Franklin, she became the mother of the philosopher, statesman, diplomatist and author, Benjamin Franklin, who very rightly attributed whatever of character he developed and whatever success he achieved to his mother's influence. What could even the Gracchi have accomplished without the qualities transmitted by their gifted mother, Cornelia?

Very few details if Mrs. Franklin's life have been handed down; but she is known to have had exceptional force of character, and to have been a most worthy and excellent mother and wife. Defective perhaps in the graces of cultured intelligence, she was, nevertheless, apparently of that class of women, frequently typified by the early colonial mothers of New England, which was characterized by distinctive qualities of head and heart, pervasuve [sic] whole-souled excellence, and strong common-sense, fortified by a strong sense of duty and a never failing trust in Providence.

Be this as it may, her motherhood was honored in the birth if her distinguished son, and Nantucket is proud to acknowledge her as one of her own beloved daughters. The vital force of both mother and son was undoubtedly transmitted by that sturdy old pioneer, Peter Folger; for breeding tells, and without it the nations of the earth would soon become degenerate.

Her tombstone in the old Granary Burying Ground in Boston is still standing and the inscription thereon may be read by the passer-by on Tremont Street. The Nantucket Chapter of the D.A.R. is named 'Abiah Folger Chapter.'"

Benjamin Franklin was well known for for being a profound thinker and writer. His words and deeds have shaped American history. Here are some of his quotes, and help give insight into the mind and heart of this great man (quotes courtesy of brainyquote.com):

- Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.
- Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.
- An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.
- Well done is better than well said.
- Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.
- Money has never made man happy, nor will it, there is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. The more of it one has the more one wants.
- Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.
- By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.
- The Constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.
- They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
- Anger is never without a reason, but seldom with a good one.
- Do not fear mistakes. You will know failure. Continue to reach out.
- Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship.
- It is much easier to suppress a first desire than to satisfy those that follow.
- He that would live in peace and at ease must not speak all he knows or all he sees.
- I didn't fail the test, I just found 100 ways to do it wrong.
- We are more thoroughly an enlightened people, with respect to our political interests, than perhaps any other under heaven. Every man among us reads, and is so easy in his circumstances as to have leisure for conversations of improvement and for acquiring information.
- Work as if you were to live a hundred years. Pray as if you were to die tomorrow.
- Having been poor is no shame, but being ashamed of it, is.
- It is the eye of other people that ruin us. If I were blind I would want, neither fine clothes, fine houses or fine furniture.
- Where liberty is, there is my country.
- Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of.
- Take time for all things: great haste makes great waste.
- I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion about the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it.
- A good conscience is a continual Christmas.
- Speak ill of no man, but speak all the good you know of everybody.
- Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today.
- When in doubt, don't.
- All mankind is divided into three classes: those that are immovable, those that are movable, and those that move.

General Notes: Husband - Daniel Freeman McMillion

He was born Freeman Daniel McMillion. When he was about eighteen months old, his father died, so he never knew him. When he was a young boy, his mother Etta married J. A. Stevenson and they moved from Arkansas to Texas. He and his brother Ira later legally changed their names and Freeman Daniel McMillion became "Daniel Freeman McMillian.

Mac attended schools in Honey Grove, Texas and was among 37 graduates of Honey Grove High School's Class of 1931. After high school, he went to college for a couple of years and was involved in investigative work for the police force at night and on weekends.

He and his nephew Ronald Wheeler were close in age and were friends growing up. They took a test to get into the Coast Guard, but that did not work out for either of them. When World War II broke out, the FBI was looking for people with police experience to recruit. Daniel had a good record at the police department and his boss wrote a recommendation for him and he was accepted into the FBI.

When he was accepted into the Bureau, he went to Quantico for training. His first assignment was in Seattle, Washington. Then he went to St. Paul, Minnesota where he met his future bride, Lucille Ford. He was transferred to Baltimore and finally to Norfolk, Virginia in 1952.

He left the FBI about 1953 and became involved in private investigative work. He retired as security officer for Norfolk General Hospital.

Mac loved talking to people and never passed up an opportunity for conversation. Some people called him "Dan", and others "Mac" or "Red". He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church between 1952-1996 and served as an usher there. He was also an avid golfer and spent many hours at the Ocean View Golf Course in Norfolk.

On May 14, 1996 he passed away, a few weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. He was survived by his wife, five children, and thirteen grandchildren.
