J. H. grew up in Birdeye, Arkansas with a brother and two sisters, Maurice, Jr., Elizabeth and Anne. He married Winnie Bob Shaver in March of 1944 and landed in the British Isles on 31 May 1944 just before D-Day. J.H. landed in Normandy in July 1944 with the 110th Infantry of the First Army. He was a rifle platoon leader in the fighting in and around St. Lo, France and participated in the breakthrough that reached Vire, France. He was wounded by shrapnel from a grenade exploding on his steel helmet in fighting around St. Lo. Knocked unconscious, he was left for dead by German Troops, but later revived and rescued by passing American troops. J .H. spent considerable time hospitalized back in England and later in Chickasha, Oklahoma. He received the European Theater Ribbon with two campaign stars, the American Theater Ribbon, the Purple Heart with one cluster, the Jump Badge and the Combat Infantry Badge.

J. H. was retired from the Army due to the loss of hearing he suffered from his combat injuries. J.H. returned to Birdeye to farm with his father and brother in W.M. Smith & Sons. He and his wife, Winnie Bob, raised five children: James Harmon, Jr., Carolyn, Thomas Benton, William Whitfield and Meredith. Horses were a major interest of J.H. He was a well known horse breeder and he and his family and his horses were regulars on the horse show circuit. James Harmon Smith died from a heart attack 15 November 1990 at the age of 68 and was buried in Cogbill Cemetery.

General Notes: Wife - Ida Virgie Tims

Virgie penned this sometime before 1988:

The Life Story of Ida Virgie Tims Shepherd

I was born April 2, 1904, at Fitzgerald Crossing, across the tracks, in a log house, in Cross County at Wynne, Ark. My father was William Christopher Tims and my mother was Marth E. "Mattie" Milton. We lived in Cross County in several different farm houses, as I grew up. Daddy farmed and I worked hard clearing land and we choopped hickory butts and bolts and cord wood. Daddy hauled it to Wynne, Ark. and sold it for $3.00 a load. My mother, oldest sister Ruby and I cut the timber and got it ready for EDad while he was selling the other load. We raised all our own sorghum and made molasses. We raised all our vegetables and canned for winter. I was 16 Years old when we moved to Wittsburg and farmed for Forest Armstrong. There, Mr. Harry Imell built us a house with the help of my future husband, Preston Shepherd, and I. When I was 17 years old, I was married to William Preston Shepherd on the night of May 3, 1921 at Mays Chapel. Anges Kennedy (Justice of the Peace) performed the ceremony. We had a wedding supper with my Daddy and Mama before the ceremony. We lived on the river in Crittenden County with Preston's Daddy till the fall, then we went to Forrest City, caught a train to Wynne, Ark. and lived in Cross County until spring. From there, we went to the Singer Woods with Preston's daddy, Robert Lewis (Bob) Shepherd. They built us a shack out of posts and cypress boards in a day and i cooked supper on a #7 cook stove that night. They trapped for three months. During this time, my Daddy, William Christopher Tims, died in July, 1921, but I didn't find out until the next month. From there, we moved back to Cross County and I sold our dog, Betsy, and bought a pistol. We stayed at the Milton Place until Oliver Lewis was born June 22, 1922. From there, we moved to the Jones farm still in Cross County and farmed it. The next spring, Nettie Mae was born Feb. 24, 1924. We lived there two years and my mother, Martha E. Milton Tims got sick with cancer and moved to the hills with my sister, Ruby. In 1926, William David was born at my momma's house. We, then, moved to St. Francis County (Burnt Cane) and fished awhile for a living. Then, we moved to Mays Chapel in Cross County and lived in a tent. We got a boat and dug shells for a living. Oct. 20, 1927 little David died from Typhoid fever. Two weeks before that my mother died from breast cancer. Two weeks after little David died, Preston's Daddy, Bob, died;. Then, one week after Bob died my grandma, Rody Milton, died. We moved to St. Francis coiunty (Madison) and Florence Elizabeth was born July 24, 1929. in between little David and Florence, I had two miscarriages. On Oct. 10, 1930, one year later, I had Theddie Ray (Jack) ane Thelma May (twins). She was born first. Thelma lived three days and took a chill and died. I had a miscarriage the next year. Then, we moved to Wiley T. Jones' place. There, Helen Irene was born on Nov. 5, 1933. Then I miscarried with another baby. We moved to Bay Village when Helen was three years old. There, I had William Franklin Nov. 10, 1936. He was deformed and unable to nurse, so, he lived 1 month and 8 days. We moved to Tom Jones place and there James Preston was born Aug 5, 1938. Billy Lee was born Nov. 6, 1940 at the same place. Then, we moved to Buzzard Roost on Linden Island, where I miscarried. Then, we moved on down the lane and Troy Lewis was born Aug. 1, 1945. Then, we moved to Jake Taylor's place and I had Linda Gail on Jan. 27, 1948 at Dr. Davidson's clinic. Then, when Linda was 5 years old, we moved to the Chinaman's place (Fong). When Linda was 7 years old and in the first grade, we moved to the Jim Edgar place. There, Preston died Dec. 16, 1962, at the age of 59. I was 58 at that time. We had a lot of hardship then, for I still had Troy and Linda to finish raising.
After Preston's death, 8 years later, I remarried, but, it resolved in divorce. Since then, I've lived alone and pieced quilts for a hobby. I enjoy going to church at Beckspur Baptist Church. I have had 13 children. I am the grandmother of 27. I am the great grandmother of 58. And, I have 9 great, great grandchildren at the age of 84 years old. I have made quilts for all my babies. This is how I have filled my life since my husband, Preston, passed away. Now, I look forward to a family reunion, July 3, 1988 at Paragould, Ark., at my granddaughter's, Mary Helen and Larry Lamb's.
I've lived a full life. I am saved and will be waiting for the Lord to call me home.

Follow the Leader
By Stacey Hydrick
After the birth of our sixth child, as they put her in my arms and my entire being flooded with post-delivery euphoria, people in the room began saying, "OK, that's it, three boys, three girls, y'all are done." Just as they had been doing since our first two children were born (14 months apart), others were trying to plan, or more correctly, limit, the size of our family. It didn't work very well. We now have six children and our oldest is eight years old.

You see, my husband and I believe in the teachings of the Catholic Church. We see children as blessings, gifts. You may say, well, so do I, but I just don't want that many gifts. It isn't a numbers game, though. Whether you have none or 10, it is about letting the Creator be in charge of creation. God sent His Son that we would follow Him, not lead. He sent Jesus to show us that love is exemplified through self-sacrifice and servitude and by complete abandonment to God's will.

Many times people have said to us, "Oh, I wanted another one, but my husband wouldn't let me," or "I wanted six, but my wife said no more after three." I believe this stems from the birth control mentality seeping into the marriage vocation. For in marriage we are supposed to give ourselves completely to one another, through God. We must examine our consciences, especially when one spouse desires a child and the other does not. We must ask, why does the Church teach this? What does the Gospel say? What are my true reservations, finances, emotional capabilities, health, fear, selfishness, etc.? (Yes, my husband and I have actually done this, believe it or not.) When we are honest with ourselves, giving God our worries and fears, He will lead us to the truth. If that truth you fear is that God does want you to have one or two more children, it may be a struggle. It may be extremely difficult. But one thing is certain; God always promises rewards that far outweigh the sacrifice. There would have been no resurrection without the crucifixion.

On a lighter note, often we simply limit ourselves and God. Most people say to us, "I could never do it. You and David are so patient and calm." First of all, we're not. We just try not to lose it in public. Secondly, we constantly learn to have more patience as we have more children. Otherwise, we would be nuts. God doesn't require perfection BEFORE you have children. If that were so, no one would have any. God gives you your children to help you become better people.
Another issue is timing. We can all see things our children cannot, due to their age, height, etc. It is the same with us and God. We only see right in front of, or behind us. God sees everything. Birth control's focus is on me or us in the here and now. Yes, maybe it is a really inconvenient time for you, even horrible, financially. But we cannot see the future. What if your father is going to die in two years? You may be cheating him, and your son, out of fishing together.

Perhaps you are debating having that third child. Think about child number three, Fred Smith. How many people would be affected without this one person? Strange to think, isn't it, that FedEx would not exist? Or maybe a large family sounds neat, butΠPonder Fr. Vincent Capodonno, a priest who rescued numerous soldiers in Vietnam before losing his own life, trying to protect and aid a wounded Marine. He was the tenth child, born into a poor, immigrant family. Thus, when we take the lead in planning our families, we have no idea what we may alter in the future. We cannot foresee how many lives may be impacted by our decision. Yet, God knows, and that is why He must lead.

As a poor man in Louisiana once said, "One more child, it's just another bowl of gumbo and when you got a big pot of gumbo, it ain't no big thing." In other words, trust that God you believe in! God will not give you children and then abandon you. You will sacrifice, and He will bless your marriage more than you can know. You will suffer to bring them into the world, and your children will bring immeasurable joy. You will be sleepy and stressed, then you will find a toy otter or a chicken drummie bone in your shoe. You will be bored from staying home and then get spontaneous, live entertainment. You will lose your temper and learn humility. You will have a horrible day, and someone will put his arms around your neck and tell you that he loves you, and you are the best in the world. And when we all get to heaven, some special souls will be there because you and your spouse said "yes" to God.
