October 2003 Grants Creek Cemetery Foster, Alabama Old Part Section 3 Surveyed by Jim Foster, March 29, 2001 Fosters, AL, Tuscaloosa County.

Fosters is 9 miles south of the city of Tuscaloosa from I20 and I59 take the Fosters Exit, you will come to old US 11, go straight across, go past the post office and school and when you come to a right curve you will see Grants Creek Road, turn right and go up the hill and you will see the church and cemetery on your right. If you are coming from the west on US 82 you would want to take the toll road around to old US 11 and 43 go south about 6 miles.

This Church and the cemetery is still active and had there 175th Homecoming this past June 2003. This is a peaceful and pleasant Church and cemetery.

In trying to transcribe these names from the stones, it was often very difficult due to the fact that a lot of the old stones were broken into sometimes three or four pieces. Sometimes they would fit together so that you could make out the names and dates, but often times there was enough missing that it couldn't be done. It was truly a wonderful experience and hopefully it will help many people in the future.

Oscar died in the eighties.

He was doing farm work in Carrolton, AL, but wanted his own land. He knew people in Tuscaloosa who wanted to sell to him. So he bought some land out in Fosters about 16 miles from Tuscaloosa. He went to work for Bryce Mental Hospital as a farmer. He farmed to institutions land with the inmates.

His son, Frank still owns the land. As per his son, Frank Hydrick

Oscar worked by the family farm in Millport, AL but wasn't able to buy any land of his own. He rented land. At that time they called it farming on the 4th: this was a sharecropper who paid his landlord 25% of his earning of corn and cotton. If they grew anything else then it was't part of the payment.

Frank Hydrick, son of Oscar Hydrick

email from Penna 6/30/2021:

Hi Denny. Hope all is well.

The Hydrick origins came back as Russia, Sweden, England, Spain, Ireland, Barbados and Argentina. Typing from memory so I hope I didn't forget any.

The Hydrick line originated from the area around the Black Sea. Family Tree DNA group Armenians was matched to us. I joined but the admin is Russian so we had difficulty communicating. Lol

I know this is difficult to believe. I had quite a surprise myself.

The Gittens (and there are various spellings in the U.S.) are the Barbados match. Our closest match through the origins.

I can't help but think that Mary Polly was the Hydrick.

Our land in Arkansas where present day Hydrick, Arkansas is located begins with a Choctaw Land Script.

A Choctaw widow with 3 children...sound familiar? I thought so. Her name is Ha To Na. I found her listed in the treaty, I believe through Google Books.

My father told me back in the 70s that our line has Choctaw, Chickasaw and Cherokee. I've always kept that in mind.

I downloaded my raw DNA from Ancestry and uploaded to My Heritage (free) and noticed a change in ethnicity. My Heritage is associated with Family Tree DNA.

But they have a world map on there that's shaded where you match someone. This has been very helpful. I've noticed some very strange areas shadowed that was before Europeans were there. I suggest you do it.

My father also told me about my mother's line and the Native American blood. I can confirm through my mitochondrial DNA (full sequence) that it's true.

I've discovered that an ancestor's family was stolen by the Cherokees in early Tennessee at Fort Gillespie. It was this ancestor, Thomas Glass, known as 'The Glass' signed the Treaty giving the last of the Cherokee's land in Tennessee to the United States. It took months of research to discover this. In the first generation of the Glass line outside of the control of the Cherokee's, was a son born given the name of a president. I think about George Washington Hydrick and how this may be a similar situation. The year corresponds when Hydrick land was cleared from the Choctaws.

See land documents through BLM. Here's the link: <https://glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx>

There were Gittens that were Choctaw sent to Oklahoma.

Their name has some far-fetched spellings but they were in Mississippi and Arkansas. Extremely hard to find them. Also Tennessee and North Carolina with ties to South Carolina.

That's about where I'm at in research.

I do have World Ancestry so I'm able to search records overseas.

PS....the Johann Peter Heydrick lines have a group on Family Tree DNA. We do not match. They used an alternative spelling of Hedrick. I confirmed this through paperwork when he first arrived in Philadelphia.

At dusk Saturday, a Limestone County creek was alight with candles floating downstream on aluminum boats.

Brandon Hydrick was killed Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, in Limestone County (Contributed, Hydrick family)
The warm glow was poignant and heartbreaking for onlookers, a reminder of their friend, Brandon Hydrick, who loved to kayak on the creek that was accessed through a friend's property near Elkmont.

Hydrick was shot to death at about 3 a.m. Saturday by a man authorities say was brandishing a semi-automatic weapon on a dark, dead-end road near Tanner in southern Limestone County.

Hydrick, 26, died in the arms of his brother, Ryan, 25, after a bullet struck the tailgate of the the pickup truck Ryan was driving, penetrated the truck cab, the backseat and then the front passenger seat, striking Brandon.

The brothers, who grew up in Harvest with their parents Phillip and Donna Hydrick, had been at a cookout and marshmallow roast near Piney Creek on property owned by the parents of Brandon's girlfriend, Bronwen Murray of Huntsville, and were driving in unfamiliar territory.

Joel Patrick Moyers, 52, who was living temporarily in a mobile home on Fennell Road owned by his mother, was quickly arrested and charged with murder and with shooting into an occupied vehicle.

Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely said Moyers told authorities he shot the assault rifle into the air as a warning because he thought the young men seemed suspicious as they drove past. The sheriff said from the angle of the bullet, Moyers would have discharged the weapon quite low.

Ryan Hydrick posted on his Facebook page Sunday that "the boats were simply a perfect send off ... we deeply appreciate the thoughtfulness of it." He described the time since his brother's death as his "darkest of hours."

Jessica Hydrick Nichols, the older sister of Brandon and Ryan, spoke to a reporter Monday despite bouts of weeping, saying her family wants people to know Brandon was a special person.

"We are heartbroken," she said, sobbing. "We miss him so much. He was so wonderful and he had so many friends."

The Hydrick siblings attended Sparkman High School. Brandon graduated in 2004 and later earned an associate's degree from Drake State Technical College. He planned to enroll at the University of Alabama in Huntsville soon to complete a bachelor's degree, Nichols said.

He worked at Halo Monitoring Inc., a medical alert company in Huntsville. Brandon also played for the Huntsville Adult Soccer League. "He loved it. He was very athletic, just a ball of energy," Nichols said. "He was unbelievably outgoing."

Nichols said Brandon and Murray had been dating for about a year and the couple was "very serious."

Murray told The Times' news partner, WHNT News 19, that Brandon and Ryan often drove down Fennel Road, where she lives, and they knew of Moyers' reputation.

"We were aware to be cautious around him because he had threatened other people in the neighborhood and he was known to have a lot of weapons," Murray told WHNT. She told WHNT that Hydrick had passed Moyers' home several times in recent months, seen him outside and had waved to him. She said he waved back.

Moyers was released Monday from Limestone County Jail on $260,000 bond. District Judge Jerry Batts set bond on the conditions that Moyers relinquish any firearms and that he must not possess a gun while free on bail. Also, he must move to his mother's home in Cullman.

District Attorney Brian Jones said he filed a motion as soon as court opened Monday to be heard on bond because of authorities' concern that Moyers should not be allowed to have weapons in his possession before trial. Jones said there is no law against owning an AK-47 in Limestone County.

Blakely said Moyers told authorities a neighbor had asked him to "keep an eye" on his home while he was away and, when Moyers heard a noise outside, he left his mobile home and saw the pickup truck passing. In his statement, Moyers said he wanted to get the tag number from the truck so he ran after the truck into the road and then fired.

"You can't go out there and just shoot somebody just because they're riding down the road," the sheriff said. "If someone sees suspicious activity, they need to contact local law enforcement - if it's an emergency dial 911, if not, call the direct number to the sheriff's department. It's for their own safety and to prevent incidents like this."

Nichols said her brothers drove to the rural road to see some land owned by a friend, who gave permission to visit the property, and got lost trying to find it.

Jones stressed the shooting was "no fault of the victims."

"We didn't see anything in our investigation they did wrong," he said. "They were down at a cookout and came around the corner and stopped. They were 100 yards down the road when he (Moyers) shot at them."

In that moment, a family was shattered.

The Hydrick home near Anderson Hills subdivision had survived three devastating tornadoes - in 1995, 2011 and earlier this year - causing some damage but not the destruction that left many neighbors homeless.

Its walls sheltered a close-knit family, especially the two golden-haired boys separated in age by only a year. On Monday, Ryan changed his Facebook profile picture to one showing him and Brandon as little boys wearing matching Batman pajamas and looking like twins.

General Notes: Child - John Gabriel HYDRICK

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 24, 2000, for John Gabriel Hydrick, who died May 19, 2000. He was 44.

Mr. Hydrick was born February 23, 1956, in San Diego, Calif.

John was a 34 year resident of Tahoe, loved the outdoors and shared all of his loves with his daughters, Heidi and Brittany, and later, his wife Barbara and step-children Sam and Julia.

At the age of 16, he was an accomplished pilot, rock climber, hang glider pilot, and scuba diver. He dove all over the United States, Australia, and the Red, Japan, and China Seas. But his passion was whitewater kayaking and rafting. He kayaked most of the Class V rivers in the United States. He loved to assist novice white-water enthusiasts down any river of their choice. He was in great demand as a river guide. To relax, he sailed Tahoe and San Francisco Bay. His great love and respect for the environment and God's creations inspired and taught everyone who knew him to be a little kinder to Mother Nature.

John Graduated from South Tahoe High School in 1974. In 1977-78, he served a two year mission to Korea and Little Korea in Chicago for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which profoundly influenced his life. Despite severe health trails, he never lost his faith in God. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Business from Brigham Young University, after which he served an internship with the United State Department of State, Korea Office, translating top-secret documents. He was heavily recruited by the FBI, CIA, and NSA, but chose to work in the private sector and live in the West.

A self-sufficient person, he was a master cabinet-maker and carpenter. He never bragged about his abilities or accomplishments; he simply did things for the love of them.

He served as a Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts of America in Carson City for seven years and taught many young men the skills that came no naturally to him. He was fluent in Korean and Japanese and worked for Bently Nevada Corporation, Minden, Nevada as Manager of Foreign Languages, where he supervised development, translation and production of corporate literature for this multi-national corporation. His job assignments took him all over the world, and his family often went with him. He was as comfortable on top of Mount Fuji as in the subways of Tokyo. He knew the canals of Venice and the Art of Florence, the architecture of Tianamen Square and he walked the Great Wall of china. A two month backpacking odyssey on $400 took him through the streets of Athens, Cairo, and Jerusalem and their environs. John loved theater and classical music and was at home in the best theaters in San Francisco and on Broadway. Despite his travels, he loved his simple homes in Carson City and Tahoe best.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Hydrick, daughters, Heidi and Brittany Hydrick, stepson, Samuel Sourikoff, stepdaughter, Julia Sourikoff; (predeceased by wife Sharon Elizabeth Wood Hydrick); mother, June Carsten, father Plymton Hydrick, brothers, Rick, Carter, George, and Don; sisters, Michaell Allen, Ora Smith, Christi Hydrick; grandmother, Marie Whitehurst; various aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints chapel, corner of Spruce and Herbert Avenues, South Lake Tahoe, followed by a Graveside service at Happy Homestead Cemetery.

George Neverson Hydrick, III, the son of Rick and June Hydrick, passed from this life on January 21, 2021. He was born November 20, 1957 in Van Nuys, California and grew up in both Southern and Northern California. He attended schools in Tahoe from grades 4 to 12 and was a gifted trombone player who played many solos in jazz band. He graduated from South Tahoe High School in 1975 and spent his adult life in Idaho, Utah, and California, returning to the place he most loved, and called home - South Lake Tahoe - fourteen years ago. He enjoyed hiking and fishing alone or with his brothers or friends, and also enjoyed spending time with his many friends and cousins. His dog Skye was much loved and had accompanied him everywhere until her passing. George was a very free-spirited guy who loved life; his greatest love was his children, who meant more to him than anything else. George liked to cook and earned a credential in the culinary arts. A favorite family memory was he and his brothers catching several brook and rainbow trout on a backpacking trip through Desolation Valley, after which he broiled them in a delicate orange glaze sauce, to everyone's amazement and gastronomic enjoyment. He was also an excellent carpenter and fine woodworker.

He is survived by his children: Hardison Blake Hydrick (spouse Rebecca and their children: Hunter, Kyah, Ezra, Eden), Christopher Lance Hydrick (spouse Katie and their children: Atticus, Jones, Penelope, Mabel, Gus, Chip), Leah Jayne Hydrick Caceres (spouse Carlos and their children: Talmage, Nixon), Katie Layne Hydrick Hudson (spouse Brian and their children: Madox, Schafer, Lucy, Vivian), and Rachael Ann Hydrick. Also survived by George is his mother June Carsten and her husband Don Carsten, and George's six siblings: Michaell Allen, Rick Hydrick, Carter Hydrick, Don Hydrick, Ora Smith, and Christi Hydrick. His father Rick Hydrick and brother John Hydrick preceded him in death. Because of covid restrictions there will be no viewing or public service. His family will gather for a small burial service at Happy Homestead Cemetery.

General Notes: Husband - Paul Livingston

Paul committed suicide He was last seen at his home on that Sunday morning about ten o'clock. It was supposed that he had gone off to visit some of his neighbors or relatives and no suspicion was aroused until late in the evening, when he failed to return home. A search was started Sunday night but it was not until early Monday morning that he was found. When discovered, the body was some distance from the house on a small island in a branch. The body was lying beside a log with a bullet hole in the head, and a revolver tightly gripped in one hand.

The deceased had a twin brother, Mr Austin Livingston, who committed suicide about nine years ago in the same neighborhood.

I have been doing research on my mother's side of the family. Her maiden name was Whittle. The Whittles came from Whitehall, England. Her mother's maiden name was Booth. There is no relation to John Wilkes Booth as far as I can tell.

The Booths lived in a big, white two story house across the street from the pond in Vaucluse, SC. Grandmother Minnie Lee Booth and her sister Maggie grew up in Vaucluse. They lived next door to the Baptist Church. Their house has been torn down. There is a cotton mill, a Methodist Church, and a few small houses in the little town. There was at one time a post office and what appears to be a general store near the pond. Behind the pond is the cemetary where Minnie, her husband, Horace Whittle and two of their children, Homer Lee, and Elena Katherineare buried. Homer died at age two from pneumonia in 1910, the same year that Elena was born. Elena died in 1991 from Alzheimer's. Her sister, my mother, Mary Elizabeth Whittle Hydrick, was buried in the New Holland Cemetary in New Holland, SC. Mary died with Alzheimer's on Feb. 7, 2000. Mary was born in Graniteville in on Feb. 18, 1920. She married Ray Philip Hydrick on July 27, 1940. She had four children: Philip Ray, born Jan. 10, 1943, Dennis Franklin, born Nov. 19, 1945, Mary Louisa, born Feb. 13, 1952, and me, Marcia Ann, born on Oct. 18, 1957. Mary had 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grand-children. The 7 are: Philip Vince Hydrick, born Jan. 15, 1968,Ashley Suzanne Hydrick, born Dec. 3, 1970, Carla Michelle Hydrick born Sept. 29, 1972, Arthur Ashley Foreman, IV, born March 4, 1978, Ryan Seth Hydrick, born Feb. 22, 1979, Lindsay Elizabeth Foreman, born Dec. 15, 1981, and Courtney Gantt, born on March 9,1984. Great grands: Cortney Marie Temple, born on April 14, 1995, Victoria and Blake Etterle, and Mary Catherine Hydrick.

My grandmother, Minnie Lee Booth Whittle was a white witch. She suffered from depression. One of the family Bibles, which belonged to my Aunt Tranquiller Floyd, of Graniteville, SC, was a huge Bible. It was used as a spell book. My Aunt Tran adopted my mother, Mary Whittle Hydrick in 1923. There is a record of the adoption in the Bible. Aunt Tran was also a white witch. Next door to her lived her sister, Bessie Floyd Moyer, who was a black witch. (She was not a black woman, just a black magic witch.) My cousin Roff Whittle told me that she and her sister Linda lived down the street from the two aunts. They were never allowed to visit Aunt Bessie. But in Aunt Tran's back yard, Uncle Adam Barker, her husband, ran a store that sold Cokes and candy. My cousin Marie Whittle told me that she talked to Aunt Bessie. She said, "Aunt Bessie taught me my ABCs. I cracked her shell." No one else could get close to Bessie. Tran would cook her a plate of food and Bessie would throw it back across the fence at her.

Bessie adopted Elena and Ernest Whittle after their parents died in April 1920. Bessie forced Elena to be a teen-age prostitute in her home, which was a boarding house for men who worked at the Grantieville Company. Elena had a daughter by one of these men, named Sylvia Whittle. Sylvia got married to Irving Jones and lived in Aiken, S.C. She had a daughter named Terry. Sylvia committed suicide at age 39 after she had had a hysterectomy. She was forced to put her first daughter up for adoption in 1952. The baby girl was given to the nuns at the Catholic Church either in New York City or Warrenville, S.C. in1952. If anyone knows where this woman is, please contact me. She is my second cousin. She would be about 50 years old.

The citizens of the north end of St. Francis county, A. T., celebrated the 58th anniversary of American Independence, at the house of Maj. CHARLES NEELY, on the 4th ins, by giving a barbacue arid ball. At 3 o'clock P. M. the company marched out to an extensive table, spread in a handsome shade, preceded by the ladies, who being seated, the Declaration of Independence was read by GEO. W. STOKES, Esq. who would have delivered an address on the occasion, but for indisposition. The Rev. Mr. BROOKFIELD made a few remarks, and then the company partook of the dinner prepared for the occasion. After the cloth was removed, the following regular toasts were drank:

>>>The Day we celebrate - Sacred to true Americans, and hateful only to nullifiers and tories.
>>>The President of the United States - In the field against a foreign enemy, or in the cabinet against a domestic foe, alike invincible.
>>>The Union - May it be preserved, when Burrism, Calhounism, and nullification, are dead and for gotten.
>>>The United States of America - Governed by the people, the only legitimate sovereign, office seekers and demagogues should be closely watched.
>>>The Hon. A. H. SEVIER, our Delegate in Congress - He has our entire confidence.
>>>The Hunters of Arkansas - Ever ready at their country's call, to protect booty and beauty.
>>>State Government - We are ready and willing as soon as practicable, to set up for ourselves, and assume our own government.
>>>The Memory of Gen, GEORGE WASHINGTON
>>>THO'S JEFFERSON, Author of the Declaration of Independence The true expounder of the constitution of the United States, and the friend of human liberty.
>>>The State of Kentucky - The oldest of the western states: may she ever maintain, in moral and intellectual force, a high rank in the confederation.
>>>The Marquis DE LAFAYETTE - The hero of two hemispheres, the coadjutor of Washington in the United States; in all his political course he has shown himself a consistent friend to humanity and constitutional liberty.
>>>The Citizens of St. Francis county By their industry and honesty, they will become rich and respectable.
>>>His Excellency JOHN POPE - Chief ploughman of state - he lays his furrows handsomely, and never looks back.
>>>The American Fair - Industrious, virtuous, handsome, and lovely, far above foreign competition, without the aid of any protective system - may we always know how to appreciate their worth

VOLUNTEERS
>>>By Joseph Shaver. Andrew Jackson, our venerable President, and A. H. Sevier, our Delegate in Congress - True and trusty stuff - the more they are rubbed, the brighter they shine.
>>>By Jonathan Fillingim. His Excellency John Pope, Governor of Arkansas - May his veto on the ten section bill ever endear him to the freemen of Arkansas.
>>>By Dan'l Mitchell. Rob't Crittenden - a staunch patriot: those who know him best, love him most
>>>By Maj. B. R. Butler, Long life to the President, and success to his fleet, We'll drink and be merry with all friends that we meet.
>>>By Ajax Tyer. A porcupine saddle, a cobweb pair of unmentionables, and a hard - trotting horse to the enemies of our country.
>>>By James C. Shaver. M. Van Buren, Vice - President of the United States - He met his political persecutors, and conquered: the people are sovereign - let their will prevail.
>>>By Harris Johnson. The citizens of Arkansas- We hear much fear expressed on the side or course of the powers that be: may they be on the lookout, and we doubt not that they will change with the administration.

A. S. Thorn & Co., general merchants, of Marked Tree, Ark. A. S. Thorn is an example of the success attending hard work and honest dealing, and his trade is solidly established and reaches over the surrounding country. They carry an excellent and select stock of general goods, and the building in which they do business is their own, and they also own a good frame hotel. Their store was established in 1886, and, as stated above, they are doing a prosperous business.

A. S. Thorn was born in York District, of SC, in 1834, and is the third of a family of ten children born to Jesse and Frances (Miller) Thorn, who were born in SC and North Carolina, respectively. The father was a planter, and in 1838 removed to the Blue Grass State, and from there to Poinsett County, in 1848, but entered land in Craighead County, and in 1874 moved to Jonesboro, where he lived a retired life until his death, in 1875. He took considerable interest in local polities, and, although originally a Whig, he afterward became a Republican. His wife's death preceded his by one year, she having borne him the following children: William Jasper, who in 1861 enlisted from Crittenden County, in Capt. Barton's regiment of cavalry, and while trying to capture a vessel, in 1862, was shot, dying a short time afterward, in the month of April; John Newton, another son, resides in Craighead County, and is engaged in farming; A. S., our subject; Mary, who died young; D. H., who is married and resides in Jonesboro; Harvey J., who was killed in 1871 by a falling tree; Zilla, who died in 1864; Martha (Mrs. Hubbs) residing in Craighead County; Sarah (Mrs. Abraham Brown), also of that county, and Caledonia (Mrs. Gwinn), also residing there.

A. S. Thorn received no educational advantages in his youth, but educated himself after reaching manhood. He began farming in Craighead County, and was married there, in 1856, to Miss Ollie Owen, of Tennessee, but her death occurred the same year. He next wedded, in Poinsett County, Miss Nannie Bradsher, of Tennessee, their union taking place in 1859. She bore Mr. Thorn one child, Ida, and died in 1866. This daughter married a Mr. Hydrick, in 1882, and is living in Scott Township. In 1867 Mr. Thorn's third union was consummated, his wife being Miss Amanda J. Mardis, of Alabama, and their marriage has resulted in the birth of three children: Willie N., Ruth and Bessie Beatrice. In 1866 Mr. Thorn removed to Scott Township, and purchased a partially improved farm of 1,350 acres, and put 250 acres under cultivation. He has since divided with his children, but still owns 150 acres there, all under cultivation. He remained on this farm until November, 1884, when he moved to Little River Township, and the following year embarked in his present business, at which he is doing well. He had previously been engaged in the same enterprise at Harrisburg, in 1872, the firm name being D. H. Thorn & Co., but at the end of eighteen months he sold his interest. He has a good farm of 320 acres, with about 120 acres under cultivation, and gives considerable attention to raising stock. He read law while living in Scott Township, and in 1872 was admitted to the bar, and since that time has practiced more or less. He is independent in his political views, and on the 13th of March, 1868, he was elected sheriff of Poinsett County, and served until the latter part of 1874. He is a member of Lodge No. 184 of the A. F. & A. M., at Harrisburg, and in this order is a member of Poinsett Chapter, No. 77. He and wife belong to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - UPDATE: The Tuscaloosa County Homicide Unit says an examination of the victims shows they both received at least one gunshot wound during the incident. Due to injuries recieved in the crash and the gunshot wounds, the exact cause of death has not been released.

ORIGINAL STORY: Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide investigators have released the names of two victims and a suspect in an apparent double murder and suicide from the weekend.

The suspect is Taylor McLaurin Powell, 52. The first victim is Powell's wife, Melanie Powell, 51. The second victim is Ronald Larry Hydrick, 53.

Homicide investigators say Sunday after midnight Taylor Powell confronted his wife at Hydrick's home. There was a domestic dispute that escalated quickly and a car chase began on Sylvan Loop Road.

Investigators say Powell ran his wife and Hydrick off the road and they crashed down a 50-foot embankment.

Investigators say when Powell saw his wife and Hydrick didn't survive the crash, he shot himself with a handgun.

Court documents obtained by FOX6 show that Melanie Powell filed for divorce Oct. 17, 2013, citing an "irretrievable breakdown of the marriage."

Investigators say it's going to be difficult to actually know what took place.

"What went on before the chase occurred, there's just not going to be anyway for us to know," Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Sgt. Dale Philips said. "There doesn't appear to be any injuries [that happened] at the house."

Taylor Powell used to be a deputy for the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office. He left the department in 1997 to seek job opportunities outside law enforcement.

The sheriff's office is calling the incident a horrible tragedy.
