Roy grew up, was christened, and married in the Marked Tree First United Methodist Church. After moving to Bryant, the family became members of the Bryant First United Methodist Church.

He graduated from Marked Tree High School and received his bachelor's degree in business administration from Arkansas State University. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Roy was given the Pike W. W. Nedrow Award for his artistic contributions and driving the Pike firetruck across the ASU campus after football games. He was also a member of the Freemasons of Arkansas.

He was the Program Administration Coordinator for the Programs and Contracts Division of the Arkansas Department of Transportation where he retired after more than 35 years of service.

He was a Boy Scout, served as an Explorer Post Scout leader in Jonesboro, a Scoutmaster in Bryant and never missed Scout camp out with his son, Jamie. He was a patient and compassionate Little League baseball coach in Bryant.

His favorite pastimes were tinkering the cars, woodworking, cryptoquotes, watching and attending NASCAR races. Roy loved traveling the world with family and the Super Bowl crew. He visited 26 countries on four continents. His famous line was just as when Rick told Ilsa "We will always have Paris." He loved the music, the movies-anything from the 1940's.

He was Mr. Fixit who could repair, create, or redesign anything. His phone number was the first to be called when anything was broken, or a problem needed to be solved.

We have all been blessed by Roy's love, thoughtfulness, patience, sweet demeanor, kind-heartedness, and dear, dear friendship. Roy said, "I want to be respected by others and I want to respect others."

Funeral service will be private.

Friends and Family are invited to attend a graveside service at 3:00pm, Friday, January 29, 2021 at Marked Tree Cemetery, Marked Tree, Arkansas.

General Notes: Wife - Sarah Pickens Dowdle

Page 176 in "A History of the Thomas McCadam Family" by William Henry McAdams states: "It has become increasingly clear that Iredell's (Cunningham) daughter, Sarah P. Cunningham, probably did not marry Samuel McAdams as his second wife, instead Samuel's second wife was almost certainly Sarah Pickens Dowdle as long believed by Samuel's descendants in Lamar County and Pickens County, Alabama. An important reason for this conclusion is that sometime before 1988, Mrs. Grace Cunningham Hunt wrote and privately published a Cunningham family history in which she used a birth date of 20 January 1825 from a Cunningham family bible for Sarah P. Cunningham. Sarah P. McAdams' birth date was 28 March 1827 according to a tombstone placed soon after her death while most of her children were still living and presumably knew her correct birth date. It has not been possible to verify the Bible record of Sarah P. Cunningham's birth date because the Bible was inherited by a niece on her husband's side after Mrs. Hunt's death in 2000 and has not since been available for examination. It is believed to be very unlikely that the Cunningham Bible identifies Sarah's husband as Samuel McAdams."

Pg 120 of the book "Deaths, Marriages and Confederate Soldiers Pickens County 1841-1931 Volume One and Volume Two" states "*died 8- - 1899, Mrs. Sallie McADAMS, formerly of Pickens County, at her son-in-law, Mr. T. A. PHILLIPS, in Lamar County, Age 70 years. Her daugher was Elizabeth A. "Betsy Ann" McAdams. Daughters name was found on pg 180 of the book "A History of the Thomas MCCADAM Family" compiled by William Henry McAdams.

Sarah "Sallie" Pickens Dowdle was a half sister to Samuel L McAdams' first wife, Clara Amanda Dowdle. Both were the daughters of Robert Dowdle Jr.

Permission has been granted by Dale McAdams, son of William Henry McAdams, author of the book, "A History of the THOMAS MCCADAM FAMILY", to add this excerpt from his book to the memorial for Sarah Pickens Dowdle

General Notes: Child - Alphara HYDRICK

From Gertrude Stephens, who is Alphara's great-grandaughter, Alaphara remarried after Jess was "supposedly" killed in the Civil War to a man who beat her. After warnings not to do so, her son, Sharp, shot his stepfather. Gertrude couldn't find a record of the court proceedings but Sharp was free to move to Texas, so he must have been found innocent. - DMH

Also from Gertrude...
"I got a copy of marriage certificate (or license) for Jesse Johnson and Alaphare Hydrick in 1848 in Russell Co AL. The Clerk of the Court decided to copy the information on a nice format and clearer than the original in the marriage book. He/she misspelled her name. On the marriage from the marriage book, her name is Alaphara. On the typed copy by the clerk, it is Alphara. When the license was returned for recording, it was also signed by one John Johnson as bond for Jesse Johnson. I feel sure that John & Jesse were brothers.

Thought I would clear that up - I am using "Alaphare" which is on the license as recorded in the marriage book. Gertrude"     ~~~This from an email from Gertrude J Stephens [gjs123@juno.com] 22 Mar 2004

The family would like to recognize those friends, co-workers, and neighbors who loved and supported him through good times and into his final years.

Was adopted. His birth name was Thackerson
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Walter was born Walter Marion Thackerson on 09 March 1888 in Anniston, Alabama to a single mother. He had a brother named John who was several years older. The boys were sent to the orphanage @ Evergreen Alabama when they were very young, his grandfather, John S Thackerson said he found him eating corn out of the hog trough and brought him back to Talledega to raise, he was eventally adopted by Jesse Martin. John ran off and ended up in Florida.
Jesse Martin's wife had one son and one day she took a shot at him for not doing what she told him to do, it scared Walter so badly because if she would shoot at her own son, he knew he was fair game, so he ran away in his teen age years and spent years riding the rails, even traveling to South America for a while.
When he got word that Mrs Martin had died, he came back home and moved in again with Jesse Martin. This is the story as told by Walter's oldest son, E V Martin, my dad. (Contributed by "Alabamagail" on Ancestry.com)
