General Notes: Child - Ethel Marylyn "Mimi" McNEILL

Marylyn McNeill Lee was born September 15, 1936 in Magee, Mississippi. She graduated from Mendenhall High School in 1953 and continued her education at Hinds Community College and Millsaps College, graduating in 1957 with a degree in Sociology.

Marylyn worked for Bell South for 37 years, retiring in 1994. She was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers of America on both the local and state level. She was a founding member of the Copiah County Art Association and the Copiah County Historical and Genealogical Society.

Marylyn was an active member of the Crystal Springs United Methodist Church. She had a natural gift and love for working with children, which she discovered as a teen volunteering as a kindergarten class Sunday School instructor at the Mendenhall United Methodist Church. After retirement, some of the most joyful years of her life were spent working in the Crystal Springs United Methodist Church office, and especially, the nursery, where with a gleam in her eye, she spoke of the children as "the light of her life."

Although she instructed her family that she didn't "want everything I ever did mentioned but maybe sprinkle in a few things just so I don't look like a total nothing," here are a few sprinkles on Marylyn's 80-year cupcake of life: She loved spending time with her family, she was an amazing mother & a devoted wife. Fondly referred to as "Mimi" by her family, she loved animals of all kinds, riding horses, drawing and was an avid reader. Although openly admitting she was "totally a mess" in regard to athletic ability, in high school, she said she "had a basketball uniform for a few games and went in once when Betty Jo had the flu." During her education, she was a member of the band, playing the snare drum, and also participated in drama, various social clubs, and writing for the school newspapers. A prolific talker, Marylyn never met a chasm of silence she couldn't span, given the opportunity. She had a quick wit and playful sense of humor that when combined with her loving and compassionate nature, instantly endeared her to others, both young and old. Marylyn relied on her strong faith and Christian beliefs for guidance in her life. She was a three-time survivor of cancer.

She was preceded in death by parents, Neil and Mary Ethel "Katie" Howell McNeill, and brothers Claude Talmadge "Brother" McNeill and Howell Neil McNeill. She is survived by the love of her life and husband of fifty years, Don Lee, and her children, Michael Lee and Amy Lee Manley, son-in-law Brandon Manley, many nieces and nephews, as well as great and great-great nieces & nephews, whom she adored, and one particularly demanding lap cat, Max.

A celebration of Marylyn's life and legacy will be held on Monday, February 27, 2017 at the Crystal Springs United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 2:00 PM and services will begin at 2:00. A private interment will be held at the Lee Family Cemetery in Pinola, Simpson County.

Stringer Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Lewis Clock Hudiburgh was born 5 Oct 1788 in Elizabethtown, Franklin, Tennessee to Thomas, Sr. and his wife Dolly Reno Clock Hudiburgh.

He married Dorcas Kelso on 1 Jan 1812 in Knox Co. and they had seven children: Thomas Alexander(1815-1852), Albert Smith(1817-1896), Mary Ann(1821-1841), Margaret Adeline(1822-1830), Harriet(1824), Lewis, Jr.(1826-1838), Charles(1829-1838).

When a fever epidemic swept through Knoxville, Lewis, his wife Dorcas, sons Lewis, Jr. and Charles all died within a few days of each other.

Lewis and Dorcas had lost a daughter, Margaret in 1830 at age 8.

The entire family was buried at the Second Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Knoxville. However, in 1905 this cemetery was moved with the internees buried in different cemeteries throughout Knoxville. Lewis and his family were moved to Woodlawn at that time.

In September, 2007, Jeff Berry of Knoxville, found them at Woodlawn and provided me with the information found on their headstones.
Thank you Jeff.

Henry Co, Ga June 27th 1845

Dear Brother and Sister,

I received a letter yesterday from brother Robert B. S. Owen informing of us that he had just received a letter from you informing of him where you were and that you were well. You may well expect that the information gave us great pleasure to hear from you and that you are yet in the land of the living. We should be glad to see you but know not whether we shall ever have that pleasure or not as we are all settled and have famileys.

You wrote in your letter you wished him to write you word whether any of the Brothers or Sisters were dead or not and which ones were living. As he sent me a copy of your letter. I ___ to __ it [?].

Our Brother Augustin is dead. He died August 8th 1830. Our Mother also departed this life 26th October thereafter. The others is yet in the land of the living.

I have been married twice, the first time in February 1836 she died in December thereafter. The second in January 1839. I have three children by my last wife: Augustin, Catherine Shirley and William Hudson Owen. Myself and family are well excepting Catherine who have been unwell for several days with a fever.

Sister Sarah is in very low health indeed. She has a cancer on her upper lip which pains her very much. She has also got the consumption or some breast complaint which I fear will take her off before long without a great alteration for the better. She has had eleven children. Ten is now living. Two daughters married, the oldest Eleanor has one child, a son. Catherine married James M. Green who was living with mother when you left Morgan. She have had seven children the oldest Louisa died. She has only one daughter living. Eliza married a man by the name of Wiley Brannan. She have had five children one daughter and four boys. The daughter is married and got three children. Philemon has got three children. R.B.S. Owen two children. Myself and sisters are all living in this county. PHILEMON also lived here until last winter when he moved to Alabama Chambers County.

Mother married about five years before she died to a man by the name of Wm Tinsley, ___[?living on?] his property at her death.

Brother Elliott [Robert Henry Elliot, husband of Sarah Beeman Owen MAM] ____[?administered?] on Augustine's Estate and paid your part of this same over to your creditor Longstreet of Augusta who called on him for it by law, and he has a receipt from him for the same.

Eliza has been very much afflicted for the last twelve years not able to lift any heavy thing or scarcely get about.

Brother Elliott has a son Wm who have been severely afflicted for a year with the rheumatic pains. His lower extremities is all perished away. He can only get about at times by the help of crutches.

Sister Sarah takes on very much about you. She says if she were able she would see you before she died. But poor soul I fear she will never have that pleasure as I fear she will soon go hence where parting with friends will be over.

Nothing more but remains your loving brother. Write often.

Tribute by June Elizabeth Pickler Allen:
"My mother, Jewel Hydrick Pickler, was never one to express very much emotion. She hugged and kissed us kids, but not over-abundantly. She really didn't have to because we knew, without being told constantly, that she loved us very much. I remember one particular time when I was a senior in high school. There was to be a senior prom at the Hotel Peabody, and I wanted a new dress desperately. We were not poor, but we also did not have extra money to buy evening gowns. My mother had been saving Indian Head pennies for years and she kept them in a very large jug. She took all her pennies and cashed them in, bought material and had my Aunt Peggy make me a dress, a beautiful lavendar dream. I knew that we did not have much money, so I did not pressure her for the dress, but that is the kind of lady my mother was. She just knew how badly I wanted the dress and she saw to it that I got it, even though it took all her pennies."

Parties Involved:
Lois Hydrick (Appellant)
George L. Hydrick (Appellee)
Case Type: Family
Jurisdiction: Supreme Court of Arkansas
Disposition: Opinion Reversing the Judgment
Dispute Synopsis: Lois' character and fitness as a parent have been favorably assessed by the Juvenile Court of Memphis and a probation officer. George obtained letters from Lois' apartment without her permission. Lois lives with her parents in a nice neighborhood with schools nearby. George refused to disclose his net income. George put Lois and his brother out of a truck on a bridge at night. The testimony in the divorce suit is made a part of the record. A probation officer investigated Lois and found her to be a satisfactory person for custody. The Juvenile Court of Memphis investigated Lois and reported favorably on her. A man with a history of mental illness and suspected of rape sleeps in the same room as the six-year-old girl. The living situation at George's home is crowded and potentially unsafe. George has an uncontrollable temper and has demonstrated violent tendencies. George presented witnesses who testified to Lois' alleged immoral conduct. George allegedly forced Lois to confess to immoral acts by threatening her with a shotgun. George was initially granted custody of the three minor children. The living situation at George's home is crowded, with ten people living in a four-room house with two bedrooms. Lois and George Hydrick were married on May 18, 1947, and separated multiple times before the final separation in March 1952. Lois left George and the children to work in Memphis. George's previous attorneys withdrew from the case due to fear of him. The record does not reveal George's exact financial condition, but he appears to have a substantial income. Lois is employed and has a stable living situation. George has an uncontrollable temper and threatened violence at a property sale. Mr. and Mrs. Fahr are paid to care for the children in George's absence. George has withheld gifts from the children sent by their mother and threatened suicide. Lois works at an Easy-Way store and is considered a good employee. George is a well driller who is frequently away from home. Lois cannot afford to pay an attorney from her meager earnings. Lois has a good home with her parents in Memphis, in a nice neighborhood with schools nearby. George prevented Lois from seeing her children on Sundays in violation of the court order.
Outcome: The cause is reversed with directions to award appellant custody of the children with reasonable visitation privileges to the appellee, a reasonable sum for their maintenance in keeping with the financial position of the parties, and a reasonable attorney's fee.
Winning Party: Lois Hydrick (Appellant)

He may have other children but is not yet confirmed. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. He was an accomplished man, leading many soldiers in the Korean war. His company was left behind but he managed to teach his unit how to hunt, fish and basically stay alive. He was a strong man but cancer finally got the best of him. His strength and sense of humor is what I remember best about him. He was and is truly inspirational.
