Family moved to TN in 1819 (not sure where this came from). The Spring 1994 "Ansearching" News of the Tennessee Genealogical Society on page 32 shows John Patton and Benjamin McCuistion proving a sale of property on February 8, 1810 in Bedford County, TN. I assume "proving" was either testifying as to the correctness or surveying.

General Notes: Child - Samuel A. PATTON

Is listed as a Reverand on the Coffee County, TN incorporation papers. The Spring 1994 Ansearching" News of the Tennessee Genealogical Society on page 32 mentions Samuel Patton's line in a sale of property on December 22, 1810 in Bedford County, TN.

VOL. 5 NO. 11 Local Historian Announces Important Discovery
When local historian Edga Calhoun began to study the history of the old Netherland Inn, in Old Kingsport, he had no idea that the research would lead to what may be a far more important historical discovery.

"Mr. Judd of the Department of Interior and Head of the Park Service suggested that we seek out old residences and compare the structure," Calhoun said, "so I thought of the Old Patton House in Carters Valley. I had always thought that the old house bad belonged to Dr. George Patton, and that his children were born there. But when I asked Mr. Victor Patton where he was born, he told me that he and all the children of the well - known doctor were born in Kingsport. Then I knew I was on the track of something "

Calhoun was indeed on the track of something. His research, borne out by records in the Register's Office at Blountville, has established the fact that the old house was built and occupied by Rev. Samuel Patton, who headed up the Holston Conference of the Methodist Church for some 35 years. "Several books have been written about Rev. Samuel Patton," Calhoun said, "and they all give Sullivan County as his home. At least one of the books identifies the. home as "Spring Place", but no one has ever been able to pin point its location. All we knew was that the home was located somewhere in Sullivan County."

Samuel Patton was born on January 27, 1797, in Lancaster County, South Carolina. He was the son of John Patton, who had moved at an earlier date from Pennsylvania. At thirteen, young Patton decided to become a preacher, and decided to join the Methodist Church. His family was prejudiced against the domination[sic], but finally gave in to his wishes, so in 1813 he was admitted into the church as a probationer.

Later, the Patton family moved to the backwoods country of Middle Tennessee, where young Samuel worked on his father's farm.

In 1819, at the age of 18, Samuel felt again the call of God, and a year later he was licensed to preach.

After some years of experience in Middle Tennessee, he was appointed to the Clinch Circuit, including parts of Tennessee and parts of Virginia.

In 1823, he married Nancy Morrison of Sullivan County, and sometime before 1825 built a home here, naming it " Spring Place ". Calhoun's discovery establishes that the old house.on Carters Valley Road is the long forgotten " Spring Place ". Located about 3/4 mile from Clouds Ford, toward Morrison City, the old log home is still in reasonably good repair. Built in two sections, the log house had three large rooms downstairs, and one room upstairs in the older part, and the second section consists of six rooms, two on the ground floor and four upstairs. Most of the house is constructed of oak logs, which were órginially chinked with clay, which has long since been replaced by mortar. An eighteen inch poplar log near the center of the walls height leads Calhoun to believe that a large porch was probably built across the front of the building when it was constructed.

Rev. Patton, one of the real pioneers of the Methodist Church in the Holston Conference, was one of the best known and most respected men of his day. He died in 1854, and was buried at the Morrison Chapel Graveyard, In the history of the Methodist Church; his name is remembered as that of a Pastor, Presiding Elder, Editor, Author, and Legislator.

A Centennial Memorial erected by the Holston Conference at his grave bears the inscription" Servant of God, Well Done" Perhaps the old house, constructed by Patton himself, is a better memorial of days that are gone, and will never come again.

General Notes: Husband - James Carol Patton

Is listed on the Company Muster Rolls of Company G, 2nd Regiment of Arkansas Infantry as a Private. He was enlisted June 10, 1861 by Lt. Col. J. W. Bocage for the duration of the war at Helena, AR. The first roll showed him traveling 290 miles to "place of rendezvous" (probably Camp Hardee).

The second roll shows him sick at Camp Hardee during the period June 10 to August 31, 1861.

The third muster roll is for the period April 30 through June 30, 1862 shows him present and entitled to bounty. He was paid by Capt. Bradford. [Where was unit from 9/1/1861 - 4/30/1862?] He was paid by Capt. Bridewell.

Fourth roll shows him present and paid by Major Landis through June 30, 1862. Fifth, sixth and seventh roll shows him present and paid by Capt Haley through February 28, 1963. Eighth, ninth, and tenth rolls show him present and paid by Capt. Sullivan through August 31, 1863. Other roll listed a Capt. Bridewell and show Private Patton was absent on furlough February 10, 1864 [Was he ill? Did he return home?]. He was present on the roll ending April 30, 1864 but had been paid only through October 31, 1863.

The last muster roll is August 31, 1864. He was present but paid only through February 29, 1864.

Audrey Jennings Jones remembers hearing her grandfather James Carol Patton talk about the Civil War. He was in the Battles of Shiloh, Chattanooga, and Chickamanga. She could say these place names before she could walk. After war was over, he walked back to Bradley County, AR only to find that his parents, brother and sister had moved to Corinth, MS while he was away. It took him six months to return to his family after the war.

Food during the War was so scarce. One Sunday he and some of his friends saw some hogs across a creek. They swam the creek, ran down a hog, killed, skinned and ate it. He did not get a scratch during the War, but had not been home long when he was "fooling" aroung with a gun and shot himself in the heel.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Per Pherby Hayes (who was told by her sister Vera), James Carol was a heavy drinker.
General Notes: Child - Francis Samuel "Frank" PATTON
Per daughter Pherby, Frank attended Sylvania Normal College in Beebe, AR. Later, after he began teaching, his wife Lizzie was one of his students.
After Lizzie died, he already had a crop in the ground. He just left home and the crop. He had two grown children - Clint and Vera (who had been married only two months) - with whom he left Eulala, Ralph and Pherby. Thereafter he never had a regular job - essentially a hobo. He just traveled around the country working odd jobs. His granddaughter Martha Ann Hayes remembers his clothes were in shreds. Often he wore a pack on his back. Made his grandchildren taste everything he cooked. Was a big proponent of the socialist Townsend Plan.
(The Townsend Plan, proposed by Dr. Francis Townsend in 1933, was a Great Depression-era proposal to pay all Americans over age 60 a $200 monthly pension, provided they retired and spent the entire sum within 30 days. Aimed at boosting the economy and relieving elderly poverty, it gained massive popularity and pressured Congress to pass the 1935 Social Security Act.)
NOTE: All this from his granddaughter Martha Ann 8/21/94.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
More from Pherby 7/17/95 (her 70th birthday), Frank did not wear rags but did get his full dollar out of them. The crop he left was harvested by son Clint and a cousin of Lizzie's John Coulsen.

James Arthur Stacy was born 20 February 1920 in Cherry Valley, Arkansas, the youngest child of George Washington, Sr. and Ida Greenwood Stacy. He had four brothers: George W., Jr; Herschel; Earl and Walter; and four sisters: Rhea; Irene; Odena and Wyona.

James graduated from Cherry Valley High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. James was at Great Lakes, Illinois, 1941. He was aboard the USS LEXINGTON, along with his brother, Walter, when it was sunk in the battle of the Coral Sea. They did not know each other was aboard until reviewing survivor lists while recovering in a hospital. Fifty enemy planes attacked the Lexington (about 8 May) and were able to register four torpedo hits and two bulls-eyes with bombs, plus a lot of misses. The ship was still afloat; her fires had been controlled and she was traveling under her own power before the crew was ordered to abandon ship. U.S. destroyers finally sent her to the bottom. While ablaze internally, many of her planes returned, refueled and took off again.

James married Margaret Nott and he adopted her daughter, Marguerite. James Arthur Stacy died 24 December 1993 in Dumas, Arkansas and was buried in the cemetery at Dumas.

Henry Co, Ga June 27th 1845

Dear Brother and Sister,

I received a letter yesterday from brother Robert B. S. Owen informing of us that he had just received a letter from you informing of him where you were and that you were well. You may well expect that the information gave us great pleasure to hear from you and that you are yet in the land of the living. We should be glad to see you but know not whether we shall ever have that pleasure or not as we are all settled and have famileys.

You wrote in your letter you wished him to write you word whether any of the Brothers or Sisters were dead or not and which ones were living. As he sent me a copy of your letter. I ___ to __ it [?].

Our Brother Augustin is dead. He died August 8th 1830. Our Mother also departed this life 26th October thereafter. The others is yet in the land of the living.

I have been married twice, the first time in February 1836 she died in December thereafter. The second in January 1839. I have three children by my last wife: Augustin, Catherine Shirley and William Hudson Owen. Myself and family are well excepting Catherine who have been unwell for several days with a fever.

Sister Sarah is in very low health indeed. She has a cancer on her upper lip which pains her very much. She has also got the consumption or some breast complaint which I fear will take her off before long without a great alteration for the better. She has had eleven children. Ten is now living. Two daughters married, the oldest Eleanor has one child, a son. Catherine married James M. Green who was living with mother when you left Morgan. She have had seven children the oldest Louisa died. She has only one daughter living. Eliza married a man by the name of Wiley Brannan. She have had five children one daughter and four boys. The daughter is married and got three children. Philemon has got three children. R.B.S. Owen two children. Myself and sisters are all living in this county. PHILEMON also lived here until last winter when he moved to Alabama Chambers County.

Mother married about five years before she died to a man by the name of Wm Tinsley, ___[?living on?] his property at her death.

Brother Elliott [Robert Henry Elliot, husband of Sarah Beeman Owen MAM] ____[?administered?] on Augustine's Estate and paid your part of this same over to your creditor Longstreet of Augusta who called on him for it by law, and he has a receipt from him for the same.

Eliza has been very much afflicted for the last twelve years not able to lift any heavy thing or scarcely get about.

Brother Elliott has a son Wm who have been severely afflicted for a year with the rheumatic pains. His lower extremities is all perished away. He can only get about at times by the help of crutches.

Sister Sarah takes on very much about you. She says if she were able she would see you before she died. But poor soul I fear she will never have that pleasure as I fear she will soon go hence where parting with friends will be over.

Nothing more but remains your loving brother. Write often.

This immigration record shows him as being "single" (marital status) yet we know he had a wife before Rose. It's not inconceivable that he was 1) married/divorced while in Italy; or, 2) just told the immigration officials he was single (as in by himself if he didn't speak English well enough); or 3) married between arrival in 1905 but divorced (Mari Alonzo) at such time to marry Rose before Sadie was born 6 years later.

Camillo's census ages are definitely incorrect especially 1910 and 20. 1930, 40 and 50 seem to be correct which would lend to his birthyear being 1869. DMH
