She is sister of Dee Patterson who married Arthur Purifoy's sister Clara. She was a member of the Louann Baptist Church. Pearl died 10-31-1966 in an El Dorado, Arkansas hospital.
She married Arthur Paul Purifoy on October 12, 1916.

Dee Patterson named himself and was from a large family in rural Arkansas. He attended college and became a schoolteacher. Later he married Clara Purifoy and fathered 8 children--4 girls and 4 boys. He and Clara lived on a farm and kept busy all their lives with them and their oldest children doing the work on the farm and in the house. He was a stern taskmaster and sometimes cruel. Ira was my grandfather. His father died five months before the son was born. His mother was Elizabeth Ann Catherine Mitchell and he had two brothers: Francis (who died young) and Clinton Levert.

He was the son of Ira Ellis McMillion (I) (b. 1799) who died in Blount Co., AL in Sept. 1853. He had two brothers: Francis (1850-1853) and Clinton Levert (1842-1920). He had 7 confirmed children. There is no proof he had a child named Francis Oliver.
In some newspaper articles, he is referred to as "Col.", but that was most likely in connection with the social organizations with which he was associated. I have found no evidence, nor are there any family stories, that suggest he ever served in the military.
Obituary
Col. Ira McMillian died at his home in Prescott last night about 11 o'clock. The deceased was one of the oldest citizens of Prescott and had been identified with many of the best business interests here. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. R. H. Wheeler of Fort Worth, Texas, Mrs. O. J. Cantley of this city, and Miss Brice McMillion of Fort Worth, Texas and two younger children. The remains will be interred this afternoon at De Ann Cemetery. The services will be conducted by Rev. W. M. Hayes.

CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Captain [then Commander] Ira Ellis McMillian (NSN: 0-63149), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. NEWCOMB (DD-586), Flagship of the Screen Commander in Task Force FIFTY-FOUR (TF-54), during action against enemy Japanese forces in support of our amphibious operations at Okinawa, on 6 April 1945. With his destroyer subjected to a series of suicide attacks by seven enemy planes, Captain McMillian conducted skilled evasive maneuvers and coolly directed his guns against the plunging aircraft, blasting three of them out of the sky as the other four crashed at intervals into the gallant NEWCOMB. Instantly organizing fire fighting and repair parties to quell the flames raging in the spaces from the bridge aft to Number 3 gun and to control the flooding, violent internal explosions and extensive damage in many vital parts of the ship, Captain McMillian fought off continuing attacks by hostile planes and directed his men in utilizing every means of saving the stouthearted destroyer. When one attacking plane was on a course headed directly for the bridge structure, he unhesitatingly manned the helm and, initiating a radical maneuver, succeeded in avoiding the enemy aircraft. With the assistance of two destroyers ranging alongside his vessel, Captain McMillian led his crew in extinguishing all fires and in effecting emergency repairs, enabling the NEWCOMB to be towed to port. Maintaining a high standard of fighting efficiency throughout the long and terrific attack, Captain McMillian, by his fearless leadership and courage in the face of grave personal danger, contributed to the destruction of three Japanese planes and to the preservation of his severely damaged destroyer. His heroic conduct and unwavering devotion to duty were inspiring to the NEWCOMB's Officers and men and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He was born Freeman Daniel McMillion. When he was about eighteen months old, his father died, so he never knew him. When he was a young boy, his mother Etta married J. A. Stevenson and they moved from Arkansas to Texas. He and his brother Ira later legally changed their names and Freeman Daniel McMillion became "Daniel Freeman McMillian.
Mac attended schools in Honey Grove, Texas and was among 37 graduates of Honey Grove High School's Class of 1931. After high school, he went to college for a couple of years and was involved in investigative work for the police force at night and on weekends.
He and his nephew Ronald Wheeler were close in age and were friends growing up. They took a test to get into the Coast Guard, but that did not work out for either of them. When World War II broke out, the FBI was looking for people with police experience to recruit. Daniel had a good record at the police department and his boss wrote a recommendation for him and he was accepted into the FBI.
When he was accepted into the Bureau, he went to Quantico for training. His first assignment was in Seattle, Washington. Then he went to St. Paul, Minnesota where he met his future bride, Lucille Ford. He was transferred to Baltimore and finally to Norfolk, Virginia in 1952.
He left the FBI about 1953 and became involved in private investigative work. He retired as security officer for Norfolk General Hospital.
Mac loved talking to people and never passed up an opportunity for conversation. Some people called him "Dan", and others "Mac" or "Red". He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church between 1952-1996 and served as an usher there. He was also an avid golfer and spent many hours at the Ocean View Golf Course in Norfolk.
On May 14, 1996 he passed away, a few weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. He was survived by his wife, five children, and thirteen grandchildren.

I remember seeing the pictures of this enormously tall man towering over a small petite woman. I saw this man often in other family photos kept in the front bedroom of my grandparents home. "Who is that?" I asked my grandmother knowing he had to be someone important due to all the photos of him. "Thats your PawPaw McDonald's Daddy." Her grandfather. I knew I had to know more about him, just his photo was enough to send shivers down your spine. This man was tough, anyone could see that. What I found out about Joe McDonald was no surprise in that he used that massive body frame to his advantage.
"Most people thought PawPaw was mean as a snake" my grandmother had told me about her grandfather "but the truth was, he wanted people to think that and definitely played the part but he really did have a good heart, it was just mighty hard to see it at times."
Joe McDonald was a no nonesense kind of man. Most folks made sure to place themselves on his good side for fear what the bad side might bring. He had a reputation for having a short temper (unforunately, a gift some of his offspring inheriated.) and a hard punch, but most importantly he was also smart enough to never have to throw that punch.. To my knowledge, he never actually hurt anyone but the threat was enough. It was obvious he could cause damage if he wanted to.
If his massive structure wasn't enough, he also had the reputation of being one of the best gunman in Talladega County. It was a talent that his many sons enjoyed. The boys would take turns holding objects in their hands for him to shoot. When my PawPaw McDonald came up with the idea of placing the apple in his mouth, he was disappointed when his father told him that he refused to try that, deeming it as "Just too dangerous." It was said that another one of his tricks was being able to shoot and break a strand of sewing thread. The boys would pull it across the yard and hold it, while PawPaw Joe shot clean through it from the porch. My father still has PawPaw Joe's gun, I plan to photograph it soon.
But Joe, did have a rather soft side too. He was known for crowding all his grandchildren around (and he had alot too since he had 12 sons!) and tell them stories. Stories that are still being told today to his descendants. We love you, PawPaw!

VALLEY --- Mrs. Frances M. Helderbrand, 76, of Valley died Thursday, May 2, 1996, at her residence.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, May 4, at 11 a.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. John Gates officiating. Burial will follow in Langdale Cemetery in Valley.
Mrs. Helderbrand is survived by her daughter, Joella H. Dryden of Atlanta, Ga.; her sister, Mary Price of Valley; and her granddaughter, Cortney Dryden of Atlanta.
Born May 28, 1919, in Lee County, Ala., Mrs. Helderbrand was a member of First Baptist Church of Valley. for many years, she was a nurse for Dr. M. C. Hunt. Mrs. Helerbrand worked at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospoital , where she had more than 42 years of service. While employed at George H. Lanier Memorial, she worked as a nurse, an LPN nursing instructor and also started the first ICU Unit at the hospital. Mrs. Helderbrand had lived in the Valley area all of her life and a very active member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

GREER, S.C. Mr. James Harold "Hal" Morris Sr., 78, of Greer, formerly of Pinellas Park, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008.
A native of Langdale, he was the son of the late James Gordon and Verna Blanche Helderbrand Morris.
Mr. Morris was a retired employee of Transitions Optical and was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Carolina Bitely Morris; four sons, James Harold Morris Jr. of Laurel, Miss., William Charles Morris of Topsham, Maine, Kenneth Alan Morris of Laurel and Joel Christopher Morris of St. Petersburg, Fla.; six daughters, Audie Kay Brown of Moselle, Miss., Debra Ann Melton of Magee, Miss., Crystal Louise Smiley, Cynthia Lee Schaer and Teresa Lynn Haddad, all of St. Petersburg, and Tina Louise Sponsler of Greer; a brother, Charles Alton Morris of Lancaster, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; and 10 greatgrandchildren.
Mr. Morris was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Jerrene Faulk.
Funeral services are planned for Saturday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. at Wood Mortuary.

She had one son, Larry Wayne Helderbrand, deceased, who was born and reared in Langdale.She moved to Langdale in 1944 and settled at New Hope Landing near Stockton, Calif., where she owned and operated an RV Park. She retired to Hoodsport in 1968.

She was an avid reader and also enjoyed working with ceramics. She was a member of Vashti Chapter No. 431 Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as past matron. She was also a member of Langdale United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was the daughter of the late Ola Cox Sadler and Robert Sadler.

Sikeston - Funeral service for Michael Sadler of Sikeston will be held today at Ponder Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Sadler, 33 years old, died Monday at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was born Sept. 19, 1961, in Sikeston, the son of Milton and Peggy DeField Sadler. He and Barbara Helms were married June 30, 1979. He was a truck driver with Atlas Carrier, formerly with Malone and Hyde. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

DEATHS AND FUNERALS
Enoch Daniel Henderson, 69, died at his home, one and one-half miles northeast of Stillwater, at 6:10 o'clock Monday night, July 27, 1925.
Funeral services were conducted from the home at 10 o'clock Thursday morning.
Henderson had been in ill health since May, but his condition did not seem serious until this week. He was suffering from stomach trouble, it was said.
Twelve children survive the decedent, in addition to his wife. They are Arthur, Ora, Charles, Charlcie, Louis, Harold, Alleyne, and Mrs. C.S. Bassler, all of Stillwater; DeWitt, Phoenix, Ariz.; Robert, Edmond; Luther, Glencoe, and Mrs. Tom Huffines, Cement.
All the children by Mrs. Huffines have been notified of their father's death. She is away from home on an automobile tour, and relatives have been unable to get in communication with her, they say.
