~~~~~~~~~~~~
Died, at his residence on Horse Creek, on December 9, 1846, the Reverence John Landrum, in the 82nd year of his age. He was born in Chatham County, N.C., on May 10, 1765. His father migrated to S.C. when he was eight years old. He was a witness to, and could well remember many of the exciting and thrilling scenes of the War of the Revolution; but was not of a sufficiently mature age to act a part in that momentous conflict. At an early age, he became a convert of the Church. He entered upon his ministerial functions about the year 1790, and was a zealous and untiring preacher of the Gospel, for more than 50 years. Without the advantages of even an ordinary education, and unaided, save by the energies of his own mind, he acquired a general knowledge of most of the sciences and learning of the day. The writer of this, has heard him say, that often, when a boy, he would hunt for lightwood knots, in the darkness of the night, by the light of which to read whatever book he could procure. He was a kind husband, an affectionate parent, and a good citizen. (Filius).
Searching For Enslaved Laborers At The Reverend John Landrum Site (38AK497)
(written by) Brooke Kenline, University of South Carolina
As part of the 2011 Edgefield Field School run by the Universityof IUinois (sic), University of South Carolina, and
Diachronic Research Foundation, archaeological investigations into the domestic locations of the enslaved laborers
of the Old Edgefield District's pottery industry were conducted at the Reverend John Landrum site (S8AK497)
located in present-day Aiken County, South Carolina.
The pottery site is situated in the Big Horse Creek Section of the Old Edgefield District, located approximately
11 miles south of the Edgefield town center.
Reverend John Landrum, a Baptist minister and brother of Pottersville founder, Abner Landrum, erected the pottery in the
early 19th century. Due to its inclusion on the Robert Mills Map (Figure 1), it is believed to have been an established
enterprise by 1817.
Obituary of Colonel William R Shaver:
Col W. R. Shaver died at his home in Lebanon Monday morning at 4 o'clock after an illness of short duration.
Colonel Shaver was reared in Wilson County, having been born April 28, 1837. He had always loved his native section and had been true to her interest. He was a member of the State Senate and as such served to the highest satisfaction of the people. He was strongly urged to become a candidate again and had he done so would have been elected.
SHAVER, B. F.
b: Feb 15 1844, Tennessee
d: Mar 21 1910, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO, Mar 26 1910 - The death of Judge B. F. Shaver occurred at his home, corner of Main and Elm, at 8:10 p.m. Monday from stomach trouble, after a serious illness of 12 weeks, waited upon by his patient, faithful wife.
Born in Middle Tennessee Feb. 15, 1844 and came with his widowed mother to Benton County in his youth. He married Miss L. M. Black, who bore him five* children, and died in August 1894. Only one child survives, Jesse Shaver of Orange, California, and three grandchildren, Ruth, Fern and Chloe Sands, children of his daughter Mary.
In 1896 he married Miss Minnie Johnson of Roseland and they lived at his farm a mile and one-half south of Calhoun. One little son, Charley, aged 6, was born to this union. Mr. Shaver was elected Associate Judge of Benton County in 1886 and held the office two years. He made his own way in the world, accumulating considerable property by farming and stock raising, unusual thrift and economy. He taught school for a number of years. Served in the Union army and was a Methodist. Burial in Englewood.
(*obit states he and Letha had five children, but there are six who appear in his household 1880/1900 census, all shown as sons and dau. They also had a child born/died between census.)
ALERT: The 3rd name engraved on this stone is a mystery: "son of G. (or C) Shaver 1904-1929" These dates are for Charles, son of B.F. and Minnie (Johnson) Shaver, who is buried with them. It is logical the engraving should have been "Son, Charles" or "Son C", not "son of", ie, the word "of" should not be there
Believed to have died in the Battle of Chattanooga, buried on the battlefield, C.S.A. Private in Herndon's Ranger's, Captain Montgomery's Company (NOTE: although the attached muster roll states that he deserted?? -DMH)
~~~~~~~~~~~~
If he died in 1862, then he was 35-36 y.o. His wife, 13 years his junior, would have been 22-23. Obviously, to have had 6 children, she wouild have had to have married very young (7 y.o. with Martha), had at least one set of twins, wife's reported birth date is incorrect, or his death date of 1874 seems more plausible, especially given the fact that the above muster roll said he deserted. Surprising that he would be buried in a battlefield cemetery unless records were lost. It would seem that wife's birthdate is probably off by 10 years and was a typo? Lots of what'ifs-DMH

Died in Lowndes, Co. Mi., Dec. 24, 1849, Rev Nathaniel Lawrence. He was born in Bertie Co., NC July 27, 1766 and emigrated to S.C., Nov. 17, 1778.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
He professed religion in early life, and was an exhorter for many years. In 1830 he was licensed to preach by Bp. Andrew. Father L., was a devoted christian, a man of cheerful, happy temperament. He retained his physical energies, with great vigor, till within the last four or five years. He was called to suffer a great deal by the loss of his sight, and the effects of an operation performed on his eyes. Ye (sic) was always resigned, and ready to praise God in the severest suffering. As he drew near the close of his long life, he seemed to ripen for heaven; and religion was his theme, at home and abroad. The house of God was his resort, whenever able to leave home; and he was always blessed when he met his bretheren in class. One of his first objects when he emigrated to Mi., and settled where his family now resides, was, to get a meeting-house erected, and a society formed. This society he left in a prosperous condition, which was a great gratification to him, as he always felt a peculiar solicitude for Providence Society.
Servant of God, well done! thy glorious warfare's past! Thy battle's fought the race is won-and thou art crown'd at last; Of all thy heart's desire triumphantly possess'd, Lodg'd by the Ministerial choir in thy Redeemer's brest.
On harps of gold he'll praise God's name, His face he'll always view; Then let us followers be of him, that we may praise him too.
Believed to have died in the Battle of Chattanooga, buried on the battlefield, C.S.A. Private in Herndon's Ranger's, Captain Montgomery's Company (NOTE: although the attached muster roll states that he deserted?? -DMH)
~~~~~~~~~~~~
