James Harrell Quessenberry was born 5 August 1923 in Wynne, Arkansas, the son of Elkanah Abner and Bessie Lee Phillips Quessenberry. He was often called "Slick" and grew up with five brothers: Aaron, Roscoe, Ira, Gilbert and Marion and two sisters: Maggie Mae and Virginia Lee.
He graduated from Wynne High School in 1941 and attended Northeast Louisiana Junior College at Monroe, Louisiana from 1942 to 1943. James' hobbies before entry into the service were gardening, drawing, painting and golf.
James was inducted into the Navy 26 January1943 at Little Rock, Arkansas. After three months of boot training at the San Diego Naval Training Station, he attended gunnery school at the Destroyer Base at San Diego. James was assigned to the USNR Armed Guards. The Armed Guards were utilized on troop transports and cargo ships for defense against enemy air and sea attacks. His unit of the Guard was required to take on cargo at Honolulu, Hawaii; Australia ports of Sydney, Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns; New Guinea ports of Milne Bay, Buna and Finchhaven; Manila, Philippine Islands; Neumia, New Caldonia; Chile ports of Antafagosto and Channeral; Buena Ventura, Columbia; Panama; Guantanama Bay, Cuba; New York City, New York and Treasure Island, California. After taking on cargo, it was delivered where needed to various battle sites in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. James participated in delivering cargo to the battle front positions then boarded converted troop ships that were utilized for returning casualties to the States. The Armed Guards earned their place in history by helping assure that the sea lanes were safe for shipping vital cargo and replacement troops. He was assigned to the Algiers Naval Air Station at New Orleans in 1945. His discharge process was started at the New Orleans Separation Center and finalized in November 1945 at Millington Naval Station, Tennessee.
While in the Navy, James married Ann Smith 14 January 1945 and they are the parents of one son, Jim, and two daughters, Rebecca and Beth. James engaged in farming in the Birdeye Community, Arkansas - raising soy beans, rice and wheat. In addition to farming, he still gardens, draws, paints, and gets in a round of golf from time to time.

One of our Hydrick Genealogists from his email of Feb, 2003:
Yes! Include me in! I am from the Jacob Hydrick of 1790 through Jacob
Haysmith Hydrick and the ones that stayed in Orangeburg SC. Uncle Onan
Hydrick's book is really all I have. Where do you fit in?
My wife was a Reigle whose dad came from NY whose family came from PA and Germany.
Did the Hydricks come through Holland from Germany? Any religious connection?
Thanks,
Ralph Smith
