THE ZONE
Like father, like daughter
Two Albany veterinarians are more than just colleagues they're family.
BÁRBARA RIVERA HOLMES <mailto:barbara.rivera.holmes@albanyherald.com>
ALBANY: She's been working at the veterinary practice since 1986 when she was 11 years old, and the decor in the waiting area hasn't changed much since then.
Yet, said Haley Hydrick, there's nothing like home, where the University of Georgia wallpaper screams out "We're alumni!"
The Albany veterinarian has been a partner at her father's 35-year-old animal hospital since she returned from her Texas internship about a year ago.
"He's a pretty good boss," said 28-year-old Haley Hydrick of her father, veterinarian Dick Hydrick. "Sometimes (he has) a hard time distinguishing between (me) being his daughter and being his business partner."
The perks of working with her father: "He buys me lunch," she said with a smile.
Phyllis Hydrick, Dick's wife and Haley's mother, is glad to have her daughter home. She said she's seen a good change in her husband's attitude. Now he'll even take some time off, she said of her "workaholic" husband.
"He enjoys her new ideas and she his experience," said Phyllis Hydrick. "He loves having her work with him."
Haley Hydrick always thought about being a vet, but it wasn't until she was doing her undergrad work at UGA that she decided to pursue veterinary medicine. She got a bachelor of science in animal science at the Athens school and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Ala.
"I don't know what the neatest part is (of working with Haley)," said Dick Hydrick. "It's good. It's fantastic ... just having somebody to carry on."
Being around animals was normal for Dick Hydrick, who grew up on a Mitchell County farm.
"I'd say probably early high school/late grade school I knew I was going to give it a try," he said. "(Back then) it probably wasn't as popular as it is now.
"Thank goodness. I would have never made it," he said lightheartedly.
He and Ellen Gardner set up the Albany practice in 1968. They have been at their 1803 E. Oglethorpe Blvd. building since 1970.
The two started school together in 1956. He graduated from UGA in 1960 with a B.S. in animal husbandry and received his DVM from there in 1964.
Aside from the Albany practice (Gardner & Hydrick Animal Hospital), they have one in Sylvester (Gardner & Hydrick Veterinarians) and will open one in Leesburg (Leesburg Animal Hospital). Jennifer Daniels is the fourth vet in the practices.
Hydrick said the field has "come a long way in the last 40 years," with the advances in medicine allowing doctors to do many more in-house procedures than before.
"It's just so much more convenient," Hydrick said.
Also, people have more disposable income now, he said, and so they spend more "looking after their pets than they used to."
Being an established Albany practice, the experienced veterinarian said some of his patients' owners are children and grandchildren of original clientele.
Dick and Haley Hydrick have an obvious sense of comfort when working together.
She holds Ristra's leg and her father inserts the needle into the vein. Then he stands back and watches over her shoulder as she cleans the dog's teeth.
She's used to her father watching over her. It doesn't make her nervous at all, instead she talks and smiles and laughs all the while concentrated on Ristra's teeth and gum line.
Miranda Baucam, who works the front desk at the Albany practice, sees the Hydricks day to day. Of their team: "It's as good as the rest of them."
"They don't ever have any problems, or spats or anything like that," Baucam said. "They both get along well."
When the doctors have a difference in opinion over a case, Dick Hydrick is usually the one to back off, she said. He said he'll walk out of the room so she can learn on her own.
"There's a safety net there," said the young vet of working under her father's wing. "But yet I want to make him proud."
The Hydrick family has always been a close one, they said. Hydrick's eldest daughter, 30-year-old Holly Waldrep, is a physical therapist in town. His wife of 35 years, Phyllis, works for the Advocacy Resource Center in Albany, serving people with disabilities.
The family has four dogs and 20 horses, which are kept at their Mitchell County farm. Dick Hydrick said it's quite a sight to watch Haley ride horses.
The vets work mostly on cats, dogs and horses.
When area horses were diagnosed with West Nile virus in 2003, the five horses that Haley treated at the Sylvester office survived.
"We're here to make the animal kingdom a happier place," she said.
Though she's a vet, she never forgets she's her father's daughter first.
"I do definitely feel like a daughter, because everybody asks me, 'When are you going to let your daddy retire?' "
Dick Hydrick laughed at that.
"She's going to pay me my retirement," he said, his eyes twinkling at his daughter. "Somebody's got to."

LATEST INFO (Sept, 2025): This from a book, 35 Degrees 24 Minutes North 91Degrees West - A Town Called Hickory Ridge by James O. Jeffers, Johnny H. Wilson, Isaac A. Bratcher and Don Evans.
Per the 1830 census of Mitchell Township in Poinsett County, Arkansas, Mary Pauline "Polly" and her husband, John, were living there.
If factual, this contradicts the story that Polly (Old Big Grandma) was a widow when arriving in Arkansas. In relating this story to daughter Dessie, George Washington Hydrick said she was a widow but that could have meant that she was all the time that he knew her?? They came to Arkansas after 1811 (Note: I show husband John C. as dying after 1821 so he had to be in Arkansas at that time) and had "several" children. Rebecca was born in 1811 in SC and later married Ajax Tyer who was the postmaster in Mill Ridge from 1846-1850.
Son William G. L. was born in 1813 in TN, so it must have been later in 1813 or afterwards that they got to Arkansas.
John Powell was born in 1810 in SC. His son was James H. Hydrick born in Arkansas. He married Sarah Perry of Tennessee. Two of their children were Rebecca Malvina (some records state her name a Mollie R. or Mallie R.). She was born in Arkansas in 1855. Another child was George W. Hydrick (Dessie's father) born in Arkansas in 1857. These two siblings eventually moved to Hickory Ridge, AR. Rebecca Malvina married Benjamin Franklin Greenwood (b. 1850, AR) in 1873. In about 1903, the couple moved to Hickory Ridge where they bought the Hickory Ridge Hotel and a general mercantile store (B. F. Greenwood Mercantile Co). See more details under their records.
George W. married Sarah Ella Summitt of Indiana in 1878. The had at least three children one of whom was Guy E. Hydrick (b. 1879, AR). Guy married Henrietta Grace Huey in 1900 and they too moved to Hickory RIdge. See more details under his record.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some records record her last name before marrying John Hydrick as Harris but I've not seen a source for this data (-DMH)
Also known as Old Big Grandma
Following notes from Patrick Hydrick's GEDCom:
Polly was in St Francis Co Ark 1833. Polly was a Baptist. On 1860 census she is living with daughter-in-law Elizabeth whose husband John was apparently dead. She was blind by 1877. In 1880 she was 88 yrs old in the home of her Grandson, James H. Hydrick in Cross Co Ark Coldwater & Mitchell twp.
"Polly" is the name given to her by Annie Odessa Hydrick.. She is listed in the censuses as just Mary. Patrick Hydrick has found 1848 land records with her name listed as Mary B. Hydrick.
Mary's first born came in 1810 when she was eighteen so I assume she was married about 1809. I have looked for her in both Tennessee and SC census. She should have been in SC in 1810 and in TN in 1820. The SC census for 1810 only lists male heads of household as did the 1820 TN census. Further the 1810 and 1820 TN censuses were lost or destroyed and have been recreated from tax and land records. In short they are not very useful.
Mary first appears in 1830 census in Mitchell Township, Arkansas with 1 male age 15-20, 1 female 30-40, 1 male slave under age 10, 1 male slave 20-30, 1 female slave under age 10 and 1 female slave 20-30 for a total of 6 persons. This is Mary (1792) , son William G.L. (1813) and a slave family (about 1808 and 1827). Above Mary's listing is "Loane Mulling". This is difficult to read and probably wrong.
Below Mary's listing in 1830 is son John and below him is old friend Charlie Shaver. John has 1 male under age 10 (William 1830), 1 male 20-30 (himself 1810) and 1 female 20-30 (Indian Betsy about 1807). The total popluation for the township in 1830 was 245.
She appears again in the 1840 census (page 129) after son John. Her listing shows 1 male age 20-30 (William G.L. 1813), 1 female 40-50 (herself 1792), 2 male slaves under age 10, 2 male slaves 10-24, 1 female slave 20-24 and 1 female slave 36-50 for a total of 8 persons.
Interestingly, the census was taken and certified by Rolls Perry. Roll's daughter Sarah R. became the wife of James H. Hydrick, Mary's grandson.
If the slave family with Mary in 1830 and 1840 are the same, the ages are interesting. The slave wife in 1830 was age 24-36 (i.e. born 1794 - 1806); the oldest male was age 10-24 (i.e. born 1806 - 1820). In 1840, the oldest female was age 36-50 (i.e. born 1790 - 1804); she is probably the same female slave from the 1830 census. The oldest male in the 1840 census was again age 10-24 (born 1816 - 1830). If he was the same male from the 1830 census, he must have been about 14 years old then - kinky. Given the dates, it is possible that Mary arrived in Arkansas with four slaves and, without additional purchases, they had increased to six by 1840.
I need to examine the 1850 census (page 207) again. The Tennessee State Archive's copy is nearly illegible, but I did not see any slaves or children with her then. Her real estate is valued at $8.75. She does not appear in the 1860 census. Family history has her living with daughter-in-law Betsy by then.
From Ora Hydrick Smith files:
It is only assumed that this Mary "Polly" belongs with this John Hydrick from Germany. She did marry a John Hydrick and went west with him. He died on the way, in Tennessee (or they settled there for a time, at least long enough to have a child in 1813), but she went on to Arkansas with the children, and settled in Poinsett County.
NAME: 1850 Census, Poinsett Co, Arkansas shows Polly's name as Mary.
HISTORY: Clyde Hydrick Eldridge (female) stated that after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and when Andrew Jackson was president in 1828, the Hydrick's, Henderson's, Hughey's, Ramsey's, Wheeler's, and Foust's (and probably more) all in a group, came from Orangeburg, SC to Arkansas and settled around Hydrick, Arkansas, which is about 3 or 4 miles from Cherry Valley, Arkansas. (I would assume the area called Hydrick was named after they came, not before.)
[*Note - John was born in SC in 1810 and William in Tennessee in 1813, that would mean that John and Polly left SC sometime between those two dates.]
Mrs. Eldridge also confirmed that Old Big Grandma was Polly Hydrick, a widow from SC, but said Polly had been married three times, first to a Mr. Davis and then to Mr. Wyle, before marrying John Hydrick.
Mrs. Eldridge said the Hydrick's were of Austrian descent (which agrees with the "Collection of Upward of 30,000 Names, etc" who came to this country in 1734, consisting of Germans, Swiss, etc. The Hydrick's disagreed with the Catholics, and decided to leave their country in 1732 (which is two years different from the record of 1734, as stated above). The Hydrick's who were settled in England and who also could not tolerate the Episcopal Church of England, came to America with other immigrants, and settled in Orangeburg, SC. The built a Baptist Church with others. Out of gratitude to William of Orange, who became King of England, the settlers named Orangeburg after him. The king was born in Holland, son of Prince Orange, and Mary, daughter of Charles I of England.
TERRITORIAL HISTORY: Arkansas became the 25th state of the Union June 15, 1836, before then when Missouri applied for statehood in 1819, Congress created Arkansas Territory which included the present state of Oklahoma. The panic of 1837 brought most of the settlers in the older southern and eastern states.
Cross County, Arkansas was formed in 1862 out of Crittenden, Poinsett, and St. Francis counties. Crittenden was formed in 1825, Poinsett in 1838, and St. Francis in 1827. Hydrick, Arkansas is just above the Cross/Poinsett County border, being in Poinsett County. Hickory Ridge is just under the Cross/Poinsett County border, being in Cross County.
The following information was recorded by A. Odessa Hydrick, and given by her father, George Washington Hydrick when he was 78 (Dessie was 25): "Old Big Grandma, whose name was Polly, a widow, came from either North or SC with a Charlie Shaver. She had three children, two boys, William and John and one girl (name unknown). The girl marred a Jack Tyer. Don't know who William Hydrick married. John Hydrick married a girl named Betsy and had five boys, and three girls, the boys being Jim Hydrick, William Hydrick, Jake Hydrick, Isom Hydrick, and Ben Hydrick; and the girls being Sarah Hydrick, Mary Jane Hydrick, and Katie Hydrick, (these people being George Washington Hydrick's uncles and aunts).
William Hydrick married a Hughey. Their children were Tiny Hydrick, Mary Beck Hydrick, Isom Hydrick, and Bob Hydrick.
Jake Hydrick married a Taylor. No children were born to this union. Jake died. Ben Hydrick was killed in the Civil War. He was never married. Isom Hydrick was killed in the Civil War. He was never married. These two men fought for the South, or Confederate Army. George Washington Hydrick remembered the soldiers of the Civil War as he was about seven years old. However, no fighting was done around his home.
Sarah Hydrick married a Henderson....Mary Jane Hydrick married John Pink Greenwood...or was it Kate Hydrick who married John Pink Greenwood? All these families lived around Hydrick, Arkansas, or Sugar Creek (in Cross County) as it was then. It was later called Hydrick Creek. It got its name from George Washington Hydrick's father, Jim Hydrick. He helped construct the railroad through there and he was elected railroad or depot agent."
Letter dated May 24, 1980 from Dessie Hydrick to Ruby and Bill Hydrick in Texas:
"From census records I have found that Polly's real name was Mary, and the "Polly" is the nickname for Mary. As Old Big Grandma, Mary Polly was a widow when she came from SC to Arkansas with the Charles Shaver family in 1824, and with her three children, Rebecca, John and William G.L...I have recently heard that a Hydrick and some Henderson families went first to Georgia from SC, before going onto Arkansas, but the census records also indicate that William G.L., Mary Polly's youngest son, was born in Tennessee in 1813, so we have been looking for Mary Polly's husband in Tennessee. Now, we will have to start looking for him in Georgia--in Atlanta, Marietta, and Savannah."
1870 Census, Poinsett County, Arkansas:
Mary Hydrick, age 78, born in SC is listed in household of Elizabeth Hydrick (her daughter-in-law, presumably), who is age 63, born in Tennessee. Two great grandchildren of Mary's are listed in household, also...Isham Hydrick, age 10, and Robert Hydrick, age 1, both born in Arkansas. Could have been visiting there on day of census?
Additional info as of 28 Sep 2023: From the Lane Family tree in Ancestry.com, Mary's parents were Moses Brown and Emily Milly Milstead. Also noted, she married George Samuel W. Parker about 1824 in Arkansas. In Aunt Dessie's letter above to Ruby and Bill Hydrick, a reference to Georgia was made. Coincidence that the Lane Family tree states that Mary''s parents died in Newton, GA. However, Newton is located almost to the Florida line and quite a ways from Tennessee. A straight-line trip from Orangeburg Co, SC to TN would have taken them thru the NE tip of Georgia, but Newton would have been out of the way unless, of course, her parents had moved to Newton later. (and assuming this parentage is correct) (DMH)
General Notes: Husband - James P. Brown
James P Brown was the grandson of Jacob "the Wagon Maker" Braun. His death date was found in probate records from Hamilton County, Indiana when his son reported his intestate death.
He was very likely living around McMinnville, Warren, TN before 1810 where he met his first known wife Hester Ann Helms. They were married before March 1812 as their first son was born in December. In May of 1813 the moved to Shelby County, Kentucky where they raised one crop and had their second son, John Jack Brown. They lived in Craig Township, Switzerland County, Indiana from 1814 until March of 1829 when they moved just outside of Fortville, Indiana on land now mostly covered by Geist Reservoir.
Hester died giving birth to Perry Brown outside of Vevay, IN in May of 1825. In the fall he married Amelia Haskell, a native of New Jersey who had moved with her family to land very close to where James lived. She was the mother of Job H. Brown. Amelia is confirmed through title records to be James's wife and their marriage license is known. It is unknown when she died, but it was prior to 1844 when James's last son - Lewis Brown was born with his 3rd wife, Mary Apple, the widow of George Pickel.
In the January term of 1853, his eldest son Henderson reported his death to the court. It ended up being more than a little complicated - enough so that land James bought at an estate sale was not transferred to the family and was seized for development in the 1950's.
General Notes: Husband - James P. Brown
James P Brown was the grandson of Jacob "the Wagon Maker" Braun. His death date was found in probate records from Hamilton County, Indiana when his son reported his intestate death.
He was very likely living around McMinnville, Warren, TN before 1810 where he met his first known wife Hester Ann Helms. They were married before March 1812 as their first son was born in December. In May of 1813 the moved to Shelby County, Kentucky where they raised one crop and had their second son, John Jack Brown. They lived in Craig Township, Switzerland County, Indiana from 1814 until March of 1829 when they moved just outside of Fortville, Indiana on land now mostly covered by Geist Reservoir.
Hester died giving birth to Perry Brown outside of Vevay, IN in May of 1825. In the fall he married Amelia Haskell, a native of New Jersey who had moved with her family to land very close to where James lived. She was the mother of Job H. Brown. Amelia is confirmed through title records to be James's wife and their marriage license is known. It is unknown when she died, but it was prior to 1844 when James's last son - Lewis Brown was born with his 3rd wife, Mary Apple, the widow of George Pickel.
In the January term of 1853, his eldest son Henderson reported his death to the court. It ended up being more than a little complicated - enough so that land James bought at an estate sale was not transferred to the family and was seized for development in the 1950's.
It is only assumed that this is the same John found in Tennesse records...that he died on his way to Arkansas, where his family settled.
The authors state that John actually came to Arkansas with Mary sometime after 1811, unless they had him confused with their son, John Powell. Most records show him dying possibly in SC or TN.
General Notes: Wife - Mary Pauline "Polly" Brown
Relationship to Dennis Morgan Hydrick: 4th great-grandmother
LATEST INFO (Sept, 2025): This from a book, 35 Degrees 24 Minutes North 91Degrees West - A Town Called Hickory Ridge by James O. Jeffers, Johnny H. Wilson, Isaac A. Bratcher and Don Evans.
Per the 1830 census of Mitchell Township in Poinsett County, Arkansas, Mary Pauline "Polly" and her husband, John, were living there.
If factual, this contradicts the story that Polly (Old Big Grandma) was a widow when arriving in Arkansas. In relating this story to daughter Dessie, George Washington Hydrick said she was a widow but that could have meant that she was all the time that he knew her?? They came to Arkansas after 1811 (Note: I show husband John C. as dying after 1821 so he had to be in Arkansas at that time) and had "several" children. Rebecca was born in 1811 in SC and later married Ajax Tyer who was the postmaster in Mill Ridge from 1846-1850.
Son William G. L. was born in 1813 in TN, so it must have been later in 1813 or afterwards that they got to Arkansas.
John Powell was born in 1810 in SC. His son was James H. Hydrick born in Arkansas. He married Sarah Perry of Tennessee. Two of their children were Rebecca Malvina (some records state her name a Mollie R. or Mallie R.). She was born in Arkansas in 1855. Another child was George W. Hydrick (Dessie's father) born in Arkansas in 1857. These two siblings eventually moved to Hickory Ridge, AR. Rebecca Malvina married Benjamin Franklin Greenwood (b. 1850, AR) in 1873. In about 1903, the couple moved to Hickory Ridge where they bought the Hickory Ridge Hotel and a general mercantile store (B. F. Greenwood Mercantile Co). See more details under their records.
George W. married Sarah Ella Summitt of Indiana in 1878. The had at least three children one of whom was Guy E. Hydrick (b. 1879, AR). Guy married Henrietta Grace Huey in 1900 and they too moved to Hickory RIdge. See more details under his record.
Some records record her last name before marrying John Hydrick as Harris but I've not seen a source for this data (-DMH)
Also known as Old Big Grandma
Following notes from Patrick Hydrick's GEDCom:
Polly was in St Francis Co Ark 1833. Polly was a Baptist. On 1860 census she is living with daughter-in-law Elizabeth whose husband John was apparently dead. She was blind by 1877. In 1880 she was 88 yrs old in the home of her Grandson, James H. Hydrick in Cross Co Ark Coldwater & Mitchell twp.
"Polly" is the name given to her by Annie Odessa Hydrick.. She is listed in the censuses as just Mary. Patrick Hydrick has found 1848 land records with her name listed as Mary B. Hydrick.
Mary's first born came in 1810 when she was eighteen so I assume she was married about 1809. I have looked for her in both Tennessee and SC census. She should have been in SC in 1810 and in TN in 1820. The SC census for 1810 only lists male heads of household as did the 1820 TN census. Further the 1810 and 1820 TN censuses were lost or destroyed and have been recreated from tax and land records. In short they are not very useful.
Mary first appears in 1830 census in Mitchell Township, Arkansas with 1 male age 15-20, 1 female 30-40, 1 male slave under age 10, 1 male slave 20-30, 1 female slave under age 10 and 1 female slave 20-30 for a total of 6 persons. This is Mary (1792) , son William G.L. (1813) and a slave family (about 1808 and 1827). Above Mary's listing is "Loane Mulling". This is difficult to read and probably wrong.
Below Mary's listing in 1830 is son John and below him is old friend Charlie Shaver. John has 1 male under age 10 (William 1830), 1 male 20-30 (himself 1810) and 1 female 20-30 (Indian Betsy about 1807). The total popluation for the township in 1830 was 245.
She appears again in the 1840 census (page 129) after son John. Her listing shows 1 male age 20-30 (William G.L. 1813), 1 female 40-50 (herself 1792), 2 male slaves under age 10, 2 male slaves 10-24, 1 female slave 20-24 and 1 female slave 36-50 for a total of 8 persons.
Interestingly, the census was taken and certified by Rolls Perry. Roll's daughter Sarah R. became the wife of James H. Hydrick, Mary's grandson.
If the slave family with Mary in 1830 and 1840 are the same, the ages are interesting. The slave wife in 1830 was age 24-36 (i.e. born 1794 - 1806); the oldest male was age 10-24 (i.e. born 1806 - 1820). In 1840, the oldest female was age 36-50 (i.e. born 1790 - 1804); she is probably the same female slave from the 1830 census. The oldest male in the 1840 census was again age 10-24 (born 1816 - 1830). If he was the same male from the 1830 census, he must have been about 14 years old then - kinky. Given the dates, it is possible that Mary arrived in Arkansas with four slaves and, without additional purchases, they had increased to six by 1840.
I need to examine the 1850 census (page 207) again. The Tennessee State Archive's copy is nearly illegible, but I did not see any slaves or children with her then. Her real estate is valued at $8.75. She does not appear in the 1860 census. Family history has her living with daughter-in-law Betsy by then.
From Ora Hydrick Smith files:
It is only assumed that this Mary "Polly" belongs with this John Hydrick from Germany. She did marry a John Hydrick and went west with him. He died on the way, in Tennessee (or they settled there for a time, at least long enough to have a child in 1813), but she went on to Arkansas with the children, and settled in Poinsett County.
NAME: 1850 Census, Poinsett Co, Arkansas shows Polly's name as Mary.
HISTORY: Clyde Hydrick Eldridge (female) stated that after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and when Andrew Jackson was president in 1828, the Hydrick's, Henderson's, Hughey's, Ramsey's, Wheeler's, and Foust's (and probably more) all in a group, came from Orangeburg, SC to Arkansas and settled around Hydrick, Arkansas, which is about 3 or 4 miles from Cherry Valley, Arkansas. (I would assume the area called Hydrick was named after they came, not before.)
[*Note - John was born in SC in 1810 and William in Tennessee in 1813, that would mean that John and Polly left SC sometime between those two dates.]
Mrs. Eldridge also confirmed that Old Big Grandma was Polly Hydrick, a widow from SC, but said Polly had been married three times, first to a Mr. Davis and then to Mr. Wyle, before marrying John Hydrick.
Mrs. Eldridge said the Hydrick's were of Austrian descent (which agrees with the "Collection of Upward of 30,000 Names, etc" who came to this country in 1734, consisting of Germans, Swiss, etc. The Hydrick's disagreed with the Catholics, and decided to leave their country in 1732 (which is two years different from the record of 1734, as stated above). The Hydrick's who were settled in England and who also could not tolerate the Episcopal Church of England, came to America with other immigrants, and settled in Orangeburg, SC. The built a Baptist Church with others. Out of gratitude to William of Orange, who became King of England, the settlers named Orangeburg after him. The king was born in Holland, son of Prince Orange, and Mary, daughter of Charles I of England.
TERRITORIAL HISTORY: Arkansas became the 25th state of the Union June 15, 1836, before then when Missouri applied for statehood in 1819, Congress created Arkansas Territory which included the present state of Oklahoma. The panic of 1837 brought most of the settlers in the older southern and eastern states.
Cross County, Arkansas was formed in 1862 out of Crittenden, Poinsett, and St. Francis counties. Crittenden was formed in 1825, Poinsett in 1838, and St. Francis in 1827. Hydrick, Arkansas is just above the Cross/Poinsett County border, being in Poinsett County. Hickory Ridge is just under the Cross/Poinsett County border, being in Cross County.
The following information was recorded by A. Odessa Hydrick, and given by her father, George Washington Hydrick when he was 78 (Dessie was 25): "Old Big Grandma, whose name was Polly, a widow, came from either North or SC with a Charlie Shaver. She had three children, two boys, William and John and one girl (name unknown). The girl marred a Jack Tyer. Don't know who William Hydrick married. John Hydrick married a girl named Betsy and had five boys, and three girls, the boys being Jim Hydrick, William Hydrick, Jake Hydrick, Isom Hydrick, and Ben Hydrick; and the girls being Sarah Hydrick, Mary Jane Hydrick, and Katie Hydrick, (these people being George Washington Hydrick's uncles and aunts).
William Hydrick married a Hughey. Their children were Tiny Hydrick, Mary Beck Hydrick, Isom Hydrick, and Bob Hydrick.
Jake Hydrick married a Taylor. No children were born to this union. Jake died. Ben Hydrick was killed in the Civil War. He was never married. Isom Hydrick was killed in the Civil War. He was never married. These two men fought for the South, or Confederate Army. George Washington Hydrick remembered the soldiers of the Civil War as he was about seven years old. However, no fighting was done around his home.
Sarah Hydrick married a Henderson....Mary Jane Hydrick married John Pink Greenwood...or was it Kate Hydrick who married John Pink Greenwood? All these families lived around Hydrick, Arkansas, or Sugar Creek (in Cross County) as it was then. It was later called Hydrick Creek. It got its name from George Washington Hydrick's father, Jim Hydrick. He helped construct the railroad through there and he was elected railroad or depot agent."
Letter dated May 24, 1980 from Dessie Hydrick to Ruby and Bill Hydrick in Texas:
"From census records I have found that Polly's real name was Mary, and the "Polly" is the nickname for Mary. As Old Big Grandma, Mary Polly was a widow when she came from SC to Arkansas with the Charles Shaver family in 1824, and with her three children, Rebecca, John and William G.L...I have recently heard that a Hydrick and some Henderson families went first to Georgia from SC, before going onto Arkansas, but the census records also indicate that William G.L., Mary Polly's youngest son, was born in Tennessee in 1813, so we have been looking for Mary Polly's husband in Tennessee. Now, we will have to start looking for him in Georgia--in Atlanta, Marietta, and Savannah."
1870 Census, Poinsett County, Arkansas:
Mary Hydrick, age 78, born in SC is listed in household of Elizabeth Hydrick (her daughter-in-law, presumably), who is age 63, born in Tennessee. Two great grandchildren of Mary's are listed in household, also...Isham Hydrick, age 10, and Robert Hydrick, age 1, both born in Arkansas. Could have been visiting there on day of census?
Additional info as of 28 Sep 2023: From the Lane Family tree in Ancestry.com, Mary's parents were Moses Brown and Emily Milly Milstead. Also noted, she married George Samuel W. Parker about 1824 in Arkansas. In Aunt Dessie's letter above to Ruby and Bill Hydrick, a reference to Georgia was made. Coincidence that the Lane Family tree states that Mary''s parents died in Newton, GA. However, Newton is located almost to the Florida line and quite a ways from Tennessee. A straight-line trip from Orangeburg Co, SC to TN would have taken them thru the NE tip of Georgia, but Newton would have been out of the way unless, of course, her parents had moved to Newton later. (and assuming this parentage is correct) (DMH)
Memorial and burial services are pending with Chapel of Hope in Hobbs, New Mexico with tentative scheduling in April.
