General Notes: Child - Lora Lane

In her later years she lived with her daughter Margaret Elizabeth and her husband John Hal Eckford ,He built her a wonderful Mother In Law Room w a kitchen , onto the side of the house ,her piano would fill the house with its tunes and her students. I recall as a young child working many a puzzle with her on her old card table ,She tried to no avail to teach me piano but me, I just wouldn't sit that still, I only wanted to be outside with my Pappaw ,helping him in the barn or etc. ,I regret that to this day .

Later on my grandmother had to let her Mother be taken to Inglewood Nursing Home close to the Hinds General Hospital ( about 10 minutes away from the house ) because her sister Lora Lane Ledbetter felt that she needed to be there
Even then ,my Grandmother was dedicated to her Mother ,She went to visit her on a daily basis, seeing to her wants and needs sometimes I would go to see her as well .
My Mamie, had always kept Her hair in a tight braided bun on her head I remember the first time , my grandmother took her hair down , carefully brushing it ,then washing it for her in a wash tub ,drying it w a towel , braiding it again and then placing it back into a bun on her head ...I was so amazed by that ,because I never had seen her with her long hair down... It was just one act of my grandmother's love for her mother ,there were so many endless acts of love but there are just too many to write about .
When She passed ,she was buried in the same cemetery plot side by side with my grandmother (her daughter) and then my grandfather.

These photos are of my Great Grandmother Lora Lane they are from the Lane family albums which belonged to her and have been passed on to me
These photos and or obits of my Relatives I post to Findagrave,Family Search and Ancestry ,out of kindness so that You can see what my family looked like ,instead of only a memorial, So if copying be kind, do not erase my name from the photos, I placed it on them because I am its source

3/22/2026: More information from his Find A Grave page... Information provided below by previous Findagrave Manager (Unknown) and a great-great granddaughter who contributed to the biographical information after years of research and gathering documentation. I am the manager of George-Siddy memorials.

They are my 3rd Great Grandparents on Donie Elizabeth Harper-Lane 's side. The candle has now passed down to me 29 July 2025.

George Poindexter Harper was born on the 9th of July in 1833 in Pike County, Mississippi to Parents : Jesse Harper and Sarah Allston Bacot of Pike County. ( No graves found as of 2025 ). There is no evidence to prove he was born in Simpson County and his supposed father, Jesse Harper, lived in nearby Pike County as stated in U.S. censuses and the document mentioned in the next paragraph.

George was named after his father's friend and lawyer, George Poindexter, a prominent and controversial official in MS. and U.S. government. Proof that Jesse Harper knew Mr. Poindexter and held him in high esteem is Doc. No. 467 of the 23rd Congress of the MS. 1st Session of the House of Reperesentatives, found on the website Gov info.gov. I am George's great-great granddaughter through his son, Taylor Harper and have done extensive research on him. I have been researching my family history for over 40 years.

He Married Sidney Elizabeth "Siddy" Jones on 15th May 1850 in Copiah Co, Mississippi. They had 8 children according to the 1870 and 1880 U.S. censuses of Simpson Co, MS. Occupation was farming. He was also a civic leader and a Mason as shown on his grave monument.

Molly and Milton married in Alabama or Mississippi. They moved from around Reform, Alabama during the depression. Their family moved to Cross Lake outside of Shreveport, LA. They ran a boat landing and fishing store. Milton R. built all the boats they rented at their dock. They raised their kids in a house on the lake. As a child, J. Milton Harper remembers rowing people out to go bass fishing and receiving 25 cents. Molly loved fishing and would wear overalls all the time. Milton R. worked as a bus driver when his kids where in school. He quit when his kids were no longer in school. He also work as a tool maker for a glass factory (Libeo and Ford Glass?) .

Birth Notes: Wife - Lillian Mae Hunter

Grave marker shows birth year as 1880. The 1880 census shows her as 9 years old which would have an estimated birth year around 1871. It becomes more confusing as her marriage record shows her as 25 years old in 1901 making her birth year around 1876. The 1910 census shows her as 38 years old making her estimated birth year as 1872. Finally, her death certificate shows her age at death being 70 years 11 months 6 days. Using an online date calculator, that shows her birth as 14 May 1873

'Red' Hydrick's body found in Pearl River

"Red" Hydrick, prominent among Rankin County bootleggers during Mississippi's prohibition period, was found in the Pearl River near his home early today, authorities said. Rankin County Sheriff J.B. Hydrick's body had been in the water since late Wednesday.

Torrence said Hydrick was given some small ducks by a friend Wednesday and apparently was trying to put them in the river near his mobile home. He said markings on the river bank made it appear that Hydrick slipped on the bank, struck his head on a pipe and tumbled int (sic into) the river.

The body was found by a fisherman.

Hydrick, an unsuccessful candidate for county sheriff in 1971, lived In an area of Rankin County where black-market liquor was sold In drive-in style stores before the state voted in local option liquor sales in the 1960s.
Rankin County has remained dry, and the blackmarket liquor stores were closed.

my mother BOBBIE DOWNING was married TWICE to xl hydrick. she raised me as her daughter, but was actually my grandmother by biological definition. I grew up in the house with Jr.(lil red's son, xl jr). the book IS hard to find. i paid for one on Amazon that never arrived and it was a pretty penny. i have been fortunate enough to come across one locally and have yet to get a moment to read all of it. i have a box full photos from back in the day that i WISH someone would sit down with me so identify who was who and who did what. seems like all these precious people from my family are gona and i have no one left to tell stories to me about back then. i miss my mama every day, as she died in a car wreck 6/4/05. Big Mama, Ada Comfort Hawthorn Muse, was a very dear part of my life as well and my aunt and uncle, Corine and Ralph Wilson. I have old bootlegging whiskey artifacts and such but alot was lost due to thieves when my parents old house was left empty and thugs broke in to it and stole everything down to the refrigerator in 2006. The only surviving family i have that means anything to me is my "aunt" betty jean, actually was mama's neice but I always called her Aunt Betty jean. she too is here in rankin county near by. if anyone wants to reply to me or share stories, my email address is vood00child@yahoo.com ... 00 are zeros the rest is alpha...

Disappearance of X.L. Hydrick Still Uncertain

The death or whereabout of X.L. (Little Red) Hydrick, widely known former Rankin countian, was still undecided Wednesday afternoon, six days after S.C. Moncure reported to officers that he had knocked "Little Red" into the Yazoo Canal. Moncure is the manager of "The Showboat," a night club on the Louisiana side of the canal from Vicksburg.

G.W. "Big Red" Hydrick, a brother, has offered $100 reward for information regarding "Little Red's" death or whereabouts, and Sheriff C.E. Hester, of Tallulah, offers a $50 reward.

Moncure told Sheriff Hester of Madison Parish, Louisiana, that he knocked "Little Red" Hydrick into the canal about 2:30 last Thursday morning when Hydrick tried to hold him up for the "Showboat's" receipts for the day.

He said that the attempted hold-up occurred on the little ferry boat operating between the "Showboat" on the Louisiana side of the canal and the Vicksburg levee, that he hit Hydrick with his fist to knock him into the canal; and that Hydrick when last seen was swimming toward the Louisiana bank, just below the "Showboat."

Moncure also told Vicksburg police and Sheriff Hester that he did not have the day's receipts with him but had sent them over to Vicksburg earlier by a friend. He had also said that Hydrick had been aboard the "Showboat" from early Wednesday night until it closed Thursday morning.

Some of Hydrick's relatives and former associates voiced disbelief that he tried to hold-up Moncure and hinted that he may have met with foul play aboard the "Showboat" after winning a large sum in a dice game.

Haley E. Dye of Jackson, who drove Hydrick to Vicksburg, Wednesday night later declared that "Little Red" was not armed.

"Big Red" Hydrick also was quoted as saying he had been told that the argument between "Little Red" and Moncure occurred on the little ferry while it was still anchored to the "Showboat" and not while it was moving across the canal to Vicksburg.

Louisiana officers searched the Louisiana side of the canal Thursday without finding any trace of "Little Red" though Sheriff Hester expressed the belief he reached the shore safely.

Fishermen searched the canal without results. Vicksburg Chief of Police, Albert Allen said that he believes that Hydrick drowned.

Hydrick was rumored to have been seen at other places Thursday but none of the rumors was verified.

MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- Senior Airman Juddson Hydrick, 341st Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal team member, was in front of a Redbox looking at movies with his family at a Walmart center in Great Falls, Montana, Aug. 19, 2018, when he looked up and saw a man with a chokehold on a female Subway employee. The man held a knife to her throat.

Hydrick further assessed the scene and watched as the man tried to drag the woman from the front of the store further into the building.

"I knew I had to do something," Hydrick said. "I yelled at him to 'Calm down!' and to 'Drop the knife!' I backed away from my family and circled far away from them. He let go of her pretty much immediately."

She ran away quickly, and while it appeared she was safe, the story didn't end there, Hydrick said.

"After she broke away, he took a couple of steps towards me. He looked to be about in his 50s, and clearly was unstable," he said.

"I didn't want to charge him because he was holding a knife, but I knew I needed to keep his attention on me," Hydrick said.

"Then more people realized what was going, and people started calling, 'He's got a knife, get back!' The man stopped coming towards me and began to walk through the store. I started to follow him and two guys came with me. He kept waiving the knife and ranting at people - at one point he got real close to grabbing a Walmart employee," Hydrick said.

"Very suddenly one of the guys I was following him with, grabbed his arm without the knife and swung him down on the ground. Me and the other guy jumped on him. I pinned his knife arm and pried the knife from him," he said.

"Once I had the knife away from him, I folded it up and we got off of him," Hdyrick said. "Then the guy left and went over to the entrance, but by then the police had arrived. He had this really crazy look on his face."

"I watched as the police officer subdued him with a Tazer, and I gave the knife to a Walmart employee," he said.

"I went outside to check on the girl, and she was dripping blood off her arm and already talking to the police," he said. "I learned she was OK, and at that point I was ready to get my family out of there."

"This could have been an entirely different scenario," he said. "And it happened fast. Be aware of your surroundings. Simple situational awareness kept the woman from being hurt a lot worse."

"I scan rooms faster and more often now when I'm out in town, even more so than I did before," Hydrick said.

"I just saw that she needed help. A young girl in her mid 20s. I couldn't just let him go back to her," he said. "I didn't know if he was zoned in on her or what."

Hydrick said he later learned the woman had likely been targeted, and that the man was seen regularly at the shopping center.

"Initially I thought he had a scalpel, but then found out it was Swiss army knife. I sustained a small cut when getting the knife from him," Hydrick said.

The Hydrick family left the shopping center after the incident, but they did not rent a Redbox movie that dramatic day.

A couple of days later, Hydrick made his statement at the Great Falls Police Department.

Dr. Cora wrote Bartina Faye Wilson Peoples on 10/5/2002 and gave her some corrections. I originally had her married to a George Polka (??) which is not true. She and her husband decided, before marrying, that she would retain her maiden name and that any children would also have the Hydrick name

As of 1975, Cora was a basic education instructor for Department of Labor Job Corps Manpower Center in Phoeniz, AZ.

This last paragraph taken from source: The Descendants of Major Jacob Haysmith Hydrick 1819-1903; Hydrick, Onan Augustus, pp.122-123. Per the note above it, purportedly from Cora herself to Bartina Wilson Peoples, Onan must have received bad information when writing this portion about her marriage to George Polka.

Jesse and Martha (Mattison) Hart, who relocated from Hopewell Twp., old Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co., NJ, to Beaver Co., PA. This move occurred sometime after the Revolutionary War. The statement that Jesse died in May 1780 in Beaver Co., PA, is false. His death is reported as having occurred in January 1815 by Rev. F. W. Pyne, genealogist of the descendants of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Jesse's last child was born in July 1781, reportedly in Hopewell, so Jesse could not have died in May 1780. The 1815 date seems to be reliable based on the fact that Jesse is listed in Beaver Co., PA, in the 1810 Census.

Also, Rev. Pyne reports that Martha (Mattison) Hart's death occurred about 1805.

One of the most beautiful weddings ever seen in Manning was that of Miss Clara Harvin and Mr. Isaac Ingram Appelt, which took place in the Presbyterian church at 8:30 o'clock Wednesday evening. The church was beautifully decorated for the occasion with ferns and ivy, presenting a charming picture. The alter was draped in white and ivy vines gracefully trained against the white background. Just before the bridal party entered the church Miss Augusta Appelt played the accompaniment to a vocal solo by Miss Valley Appelt, who sang Sidney Lanier's poem " The Life Road". Miss Augusta Appelt played during the ceremony Nevin's Love Song from his sketch book. The party came in to the music of the bridal chorus from " Lohengrin" and went out by Mendelssohn's Wedding March.

The ushers, Messrs Sam Sprott and McLaurin Appelt, Herman Duggins and Irvine Richardson, came down oppusite aisles. They were followed by the bridesmaids and groomsmen, who came in alternately, as follows: Miss Edna Brockinton with Leard Huggins, Miss Sarah Witherspoon of Greenville with Bertram Weinberg, Miss Corinne Barfield with Percy Harvin of Sumter, Miss Pauline Wilson with Jake Iseman, Miss Lulie Harvin of Columbia with Charlie Wells, Miss Cora Sprott of Foreston with Henry Richardson of Sumter. Next came Mrs. Horton Rigby as dame of honor, followed by Miss Bessie Harvin as maid of honor. These scattered chrysanthemum petals in the path of the bride, who entered on the arm of her brother, Mr. Stuart Harrin They were met at the altar by the groom, who came in from the opposite direction with his best man, Mr. Alphonsa Rigby. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. A. R. Woodson, pastor of the bride.

The bride wore embroidered chiffon over messaline trimmed with pearls and real lace aile velt caught with orange blosses, and pinned with a silver arrow that has been used for three generations and carried a shower bouquet of bride's roses, lilies of the valley and asparagus ferns. After the ceremony the bridal party and near relatives attended a reception at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Harvin. The same color scheme was carried out at the house as was at the church. Misses Virginia Wilson and Hallie McCollough presided at the punch bowl. The gifts were numerous, beautiful and valuable. ranging from an elegantly furnished house and lot, all the way through to a great variety of silver, cut - glass and other appropriate articles.
