General Notes: Wife - Ethel Marylyn "Mimi" McNeill

Marylyn McNeill Lee was born September 15, 1936 in Magee, Mississippi. She graduated from Mendenhall High School in 1953 and continued her education at Hinds Community College and Millsaps College, graduating in 1957 with a degree in Sociology.

Marylyn worked for Bell South for 37 years, retiring in 1994. She was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers of America on both the local and state level. She was a founding member of the Copiah County Art Association and the Copiah County Historical and Genealogical Society.

Marylyn was an active member of the Crystal Springs United Methodist Church. She had a natural gift and love for working with children, which she discovered as a teen volunteering as a kindergarten class Sunday School instructor at the Mendenhall United Methodist Church. After retirement, some of the most joyful years of her life were spent working in the Crystal Springs United Methodist Church office, and especially, the nursery, where with a gleam in her eye, she spoke of the children as "the light of her life."

Although she instructed her family that she didn't "want everything I ever did mentioned but maybe sprinkle in a few things just so I don't look like a total nothing," here are a few sprinkles on Marylyn's 80-year cupcake of life: She loved spending time with her family, she was an amazing mother & a devoted wife. Fondly referred to as "Mimi" by her family, she loved animals of all kinds, riding horses, drawing and was an avid reader. Although openly admitting she was "totally a mess" in regard to athletic ability, in high school, she said she "had a basketball uniform for a few games and went in once when Betty Jo had the flu." During her education, she was a member of the band, playing the snare drum, and also participated in drama, various social clubs, and writing for the school newspapers. A prolific talker, Marylyn never met a chasm of silence she couldn't span, given the opportunity. She had a quick wit and playful sense of humor that when combined with her loving and compassionate nature, instantly endeared her to others, both young and old. Marylyn relied on her strong faith and Christian beliefs for guidance in her life. She was a three-time survivor of cancer.

She was preceded in death by parents, Neil and Mary Ethel "Katie" Howell McNeill, and brothers Claude Talmadge "Brother" McNeill and Howell Neil McNeill. She is survived by the love of her life and husband of fifty years, Don Lee, and her children, Michael Lee and Amy Lee Manley, son-in-law Brandon Manley, many nieces and nephews, as well as great and great-great nieces & nephews, whom she adored, and one particularly demanding lap cat, Max.

A celebration of Marylyn's life and legacy will be held on Monday, February 27, 2017 at the Crystal Springs United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 2:00 PM and services will begin at 2:00. A private interment will be held at the Lee Family Cemetery in Pinola, Simpson County.

Wife of Associate Justice Suecumbs to Illness Funeral Saturday. Spartanburg, Oct. 6.

Mrs. Rosa Lee Hydrick, aged fifty, wife of Associate Justice Daniel E. Hydrick, died at her home, corner of West Lee and Spring streets, this morning at 12.45 o'clock. While Mrs. Hydrick had been in failing health for some time past, her condition was not considered serious until last Wednesday afternoon, when she suddenly became much worse. She continued to grow weaker throughout the day Thursday and the end came early this morning.

Mrs. Hydrick was the daughter of Major and Mrs. John A. Lee, who were pioneer citizens of Spartanburg. Mrs. Lee, before her marriage, was Miss Rosanna Briggs, of Union county. Major Lee died about, ten years ago, and Mrs. Lee died when Mrs. Hydrick was but a girl.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Hydrick is survived by one brother, Mayor J. B. Lee, and four children: Mrs. Monroe Wallace, Miss Ellie Lee Hydrick, John Lee Hydrick and Daniel E. Hydrick, Jr.

The death of Mrs. Hydrick occasioned great sorrow among her many friends in Spartanburg and throughout the State. Perhaps the chief characteristics of Mrs. Hydrick was her devotion to her home life and her untiring efforts to care for the wants of others. She was a woman noted for her unselfishness and was always eager to aid those in distress or to extend a kind word to those in trouble.

The funeral services will be held at the residence, on West Lee street, tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock and will be conducted by the Rey. R. S. Truesdale, pastor of Central Methodist church, of which Mrs. Hydrick was a devoted member.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
The immigrant ancestor of most of the Blackwelder families in America was John Blackwelder, who was born Johannes Schwarzwalder on 29 January 1684 in Monchweiler, Wurttemberg, Germany. His parents were Jacobus Schwarzwalder and Margaretha -----. Monchweiler was in Germany's Schwarzwald (or Black Forest). On 27 November 1708, in Durrn (a town in Wurttemberg, about 60 miles north-northeast of Monchweiler), Johannes Schwarzwalder (a wheelwright) married Elisabetha Maushardt. Elisabetha, a daughter of Andreas Maushardt and Barbara -----, was born in 1688 (possibly in Lienzingen, a few miles to the east of Durrn).
Johannes and Elisabetha had at least six children, three of whom survived infancy: Johann Adam (born 30 September 1719), Gottlieb (born 8 November 1722), and Anna Margaretha (born 29 Oct 1725). The Schwarzwalder family were members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Durrn. Elisabetha died in Durrn on 27 March 1734. Johannes remarried there on 7 May 1737 to Christina, widow of Johannes Keller.
Not longer after his marriage to Christina, they applied to leave Germany for America and, on 29 March 1738, were granted a permit to do so. They sailed in the ship Friendship, which arrived in Philadelphia on 20 September 1738. Not long after arriving, they anglicized the surname from Schwarzwalder to Blackwelder. According to the declaration of importation found in Brunswick County, Virginia Order Book 3, p. 27, dated 3 April 1746, "John [Johannes] Blackwelder made oath that he imported himself, his sons, John [Johann Adam] and Caleb [Gottlieb] and daughters Elisabeth and Margaret [Anna Margaretha], and his sister Catherine Blackwelder directly from the Marquisite of Durlach of Germany into the Province of Pennsylvania . . ." There was no mention of his wife Christina and it is not known if she made the trip to America or if she died after their arrival. No record of a daughter Elisabetha has been found in the Durrn church records nor is anything else known about her.
On 25 August 1742, in Williams Township, Bucks County (the part of which became Northampton County in 1752), a Johannes Schwarzwalder married Elizabeth Bernhardt, daughter of William Bernhardt. It is not known whether this Johannes Schwarzwalder is of the same family that immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1738.
The Blackwelder family next appeared in Brunswick County, Virginia in 1744. A patent of land granted to Martin Phifer dated 16 June 1744 described the land as "adjoining Blackwelders". Martin Phifer (son of Caspar Pfeiffer) married to John Blackwelder's daughter Margaret on 1 October 1745. According to Virginia Land Patent Book 26, pp. 159-160, John Blackwelder was granted 290 acres of land on 12 January 1747 "in the County of Lunenburg on both sides of Horsepen Branch of Allen's Creek". (Lunenburg County was formed from Brunswick County in 1746. The part of that county in which the Blackwelders lived was subsequently divided into present-day Mecklenburg County, Virginia in 1764.) John Blackwelder, Caleb Blackwelder, and Martin Phifer appeared in tax lists of Lunenburg County from 1748 to 1752. (John Adam Blackwelder's name did not appear in these tax lists.)
On 7 September 1756 (see Lunenburg County, Virginia Deed Book 4, p. 313), John Blackwelder conveyed his 290 acres of land on Horsepen Branch of Allen's Creek to Caleb Blackwelder. The deed was signed by John and Margaret M. Blackwelder. The date of John's marriage to Margaret M.is not known. Nor is the date of John's death. There was a marriage of a Margaret Blackwelder in Cumberland County, Virginia on 26 November 1763 to Thomas Wilks, so presumably John died in southern Virginia between 1756 and 1763.
Margaret (Blackwelder) Phifer and her husband Martin moved from Lunenberg County, Virginia to Anson (now Cabarrus) County, North Carolina around 1757. Martin Phifer was living on Cold Water Creek as early as 1758. On 29 October 1760, he was granted 278 acres of land on Cold Water Creek (see Mecklenburg County, North Carolina Deed Book 1, p. 152). (Meckleburg County was formed in 1762 from Anson County. Then, in 1792, Cabarrus County was formed from the part of Mecklenburg County where Martin Phifer lived.) Martin died in 1791; his wife Margaret in 1803. They had at least four children.
Caleb Blackwelder deeded the land received from his father to William Philps on 19 January 1760 (see Lunenburg County, Virginia Fiduciary Book 4, p. 41). He then moved with his wife Betsey Phifer to Anson County, North Carolina around 1760. Caleb and his family belonged to the Dutch Buffalo Creek Lutheran Church, formed in 1745. This was later known as St. John's Lutheran Church, now located near Mount Pleasant in Cabarrus County, a few miles east of Concord. Caleb died 1794. He and his wife Betsey are buried at St. John's Lutheran Church. They had at least eight children. Most of the Blackwelders of Cabarrus County are descended from Caleb Blackwelder and Betsey Phifer.
Relationship to Dennis Morgan Hydrick: 3rd cousin 6 times removed
Jacob settled in the Knox Township area of Columbiana County around 1804, just when Ohio was being settled. His first marriage was to Margaret, last name possibly Conrad. That marriage was on January 27, 1814. They were the parents of 3 daughters & 1 son. Margaret and a young child were killed by lightning on June 1, 1822. It could be assumed that their daugher Esther, who was born in 1816, may have been the young child killed with Margaret. There has been no other information found on Margaret or Esther.
Capt. J. M. Levesque, the worthy and esteemed county clerk of Cross County, enlisted at the outbreak of the Civil War, in Company C of the Thirteenth Arkansas Infantry, the first regiment organized in that part of the State, Cross County, and was immediately elected orderly-sergeant of his company.
The regiment was sent to Fort Pillow, and thence to Kentucky, and was also in the battle of Belmont, Mo., November 7,1861 evacuating at Columbus, Ky, in March 1862. At the battle of Shiloh, April 6, 1862, Lieut. Joe Hall was wounded and Mr. Levesque was chosen to fill his place as second lieutenant. Shortly after this the first lieutenant was wounded and discharged, and our subject was elected to his position, and at the reorganization of the regiment at Cornith, in April 1862, he was elected captain, and served through the Alabama and Kentucky campaign, also participating in the battles of Richmond, KY, under Kirby Smith at Perryville, KY, and Murfreesboro, Tenn. At the reorganization of the army, he was sent to the Trans-Mississippi Department, and there engaged in recruiting a company of cavalry, mostly from Cross County; was in a number of skirmishes, but not any important battles, his company going on the Missouri raid under Gen. Price.
At the close of the war, he took up farming as an occupation; but in 1866 he was elected circuit and county clerk of Cross County, which office he held until the reconstruction of the county, when he was disfranchised for having held office at the beginning of the war, and in participating in the Rebellion. He then again engaged in farming In 1874 he was elected sheriff of Cross County and was re- elected in 1876 and 1878. In 1880 he was elected circuit and county clerk and was also re-elected in 1881, 1884, 1886 and 1888.
Mr. Levesque was born in Fayette County, Tenn., in 1834 (December 28), and was the son of James and Elizabeth (Arnett) Levesque. In 1854 he was married to Miss Nannie Willis and in the fall of that year he removed to Arkansas, settling in Cross County, in what was then a part of Poinsett County. The result of this marriage are five children, three of whom are still living: Elizabeth; Fannie; Willlie T.; James Cheathan and John Phillip.
The above information was copied from "The Goodspeed Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Eastern Arkansas", pages 366-367.
J. M. Levesque died 26 August 1917 and was buried in the Vanndale Cemetery, Vanndale. Arkansas.
The child of James M. Levesque & Elizabeth Arnett was James M. Levesque.His father died when he was 5 and his mother when he was 13.He then went and lived with his uncle and aunt, Rev. William & Rachel Levesque.There is a lot of documentation for James on several sites/postings and there is a nice write up by Richard Levesque in the Winter 2006 Association Levesque Inc.'s "Levesque Info" - a bulletin pretty much devoted to the French Canadian Levesque lines.I'll just be very brief:
Captain James M. Levesque
 b. 28 Dec 1834, Fayette co TN
 d. 27 Aug 1917
& Nancy/Nannie A. Willis
 b. 1832, TN
 d. 23 Aug 1915, Cross Co., AR
They married about 1854-5 and went to Arkansas, where they joined his cousin Susan [Levesque] Taylor's family and Nancy's brother N. J. Willis.He bought 40 acres mid July 1859 and started farming. 2
General Notes: Child - Sarah "Fannie" LEVESQUE
Fannie Levesque married twice. First was Mr. Puryear, with whom she had a child, James, b. 1877 in TX. Mr. Puryear evidently either died about that time or they diivorced, and we see young James in his grandparent's home in 1880 without his mother.
In the meanwhile Sarah/Fannie married Isaac Block on 5 Mar 1878. In 1880, while her son is living w/the Levesques, she and Isaac are boarding in Wittsburg, Cross, AR in the home of L.N. Block (possibly a brother). Isaac is a merchant, b. MO, parents born Germany and Fannie is seamstress.
William "Willie" T. Levesque was born in Cross Co on his parent's farm. At 17, he became a deputy sheriff (to his father, the Sheriff). He also ran a sawmill and cotton gin, in addition to farming. He married Effie Hamilton (b. Dec 1868, d. 1957, buried Cogbill Cemetery, Wynne, Cross Co., AR) in 22 Apr 1884, Cross Co., AR. It appear to have fallen apart rapidly however, for in 1900 we see Effie is living with her brother, stating she was married "0" years and with 0/0 children born/living! Effie never remarries and stays with her brothers until she dies in 1957. And that same year finds a W. T. Levesque with another wife: Rachel Taylor, a younger woman, marrying her on 16 Feb 1898 (see below).
Four people including a child - all from the same family - died Saturday and Sunday as the result of a traffic accident in Bossier Parish, Louisiana.
Three other people received critical injuries.
Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a two-vehicle crash on Linton Road, just east of Airline Drive, at 2:29 p.m. Saturday.
According to investigating troopers, Christina McGrew, 34, of Haughton was traveling west on Linton Road while operating a 2009 Honda Civic.
Katie McGrew, 57; Jessie McGrew, 30; Britini McGrew, 25; Cierra McGrew, 7; and Ethan McGrew, 2, all from Haughton, were all occupants in the Honda Civic.
While traveling west, Christina McGrew entered a curve to the left with a short bridge. For unknown reasons, she lost control of the vehicle, striking the right concrete wall of the bridge. The Honda Civic veered left and slid sideways into the path of a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu that was traveling east.
The collision occurred in the eastbound lane of travel which left the Chevrolet Malibu disabled in the roadway. The Honda Civic, which veered left after the second impact, became lodged on the bridge railing with its driver's side tires suspended above the ground.
Christina McGrew was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash. Britini and Ethan were both unrestrained in the back seat at the time of the crash. All three were airlifted to LSUMC in Shreveport with life threatening injuries.
At approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, Britini McGrew, rear passenger in the Honda Civic, was pronounced dead at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport due to the injuries she sustained in the crash.
Katie McGrew, who was wearing a seat belt, along with Jessie McGrew and Cierra McGrew, who were both unbuckled in the back seat, sustained injuries that were fatal and were all pronounced dead at the scene by the Bossier Parish coroner.
Lindsey Robbins, the sole occupant in the Chevrolet Malibu, was restrained at the time of the crash and was airlifted to LSU Medical Center with moderate injuries that were not life threatening.
Toxicology tests are pending and the crash remains under investigation.
