Humphrey Lawrence was the son of Robert Lawrence and Elizabeth Cobb, both of whom were born in the Colony of Virginia and moved to the Province of Carolina circa 1710.
Humphrey Lawrence was probably born in 1712 in that part of Chowan Precinct of Albemarle County lying west of the Chowan River that later became Bertie County, North Carolina Colony.
He married Ann Ashley in July 1747. She was the daughter of Thomas Ashley.
Humphrey described himself in 1747 as a Planter of Bertie County, and owned several acres of land.
A year before he died on June 13, 1772, at age 60, he wrote a will leaving his wife Ann the house and plantation, and one slave. He left another piece of land and a slave to his son Fredrick; a third piece of land and a slave to his son Reuben; part ownership in a still and a slave to his son David; a slave woman to his son Nathaniel, and a slave girl to his daughter Ann. Two horses, 26 cattle, 16 sheep, 37 hogs, cotton, wheat, corn, and rice were divided among his wife and children.

Walter Askey Rites Held At Smithville
Friends will be interested in the announcement of the death of Walter Askey at his Smithville home where he passed away Nov. 27. Burial took place there Nov. 28.
Mr. Askey was born August 1870 at the old Askey homestead five miles from Gonzales and spent his boyhood near Leesville and attended the Stockdale schools. He also attended a Presbyterian college near Waxahachie.
He was a retired farmer and rancher and had lived for the past several years at Smithville. He was a member of the Methodist church, the Masonic lodge and Woodmen of the World.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Katherine Askey; a sister, Mrs. Cora Collins of Smithville and an aunt, Mrs. H.W. Matthews.

LOYALTY RANGER
Walter H. Askey was born August 1871, in Gonzales County, Texas to Elijah Clinton "Clint" Askey and Elizabeth Susan Carnes. Walter stood 5ft. 9in. tall, had brown eyes, brown hair and a dark complexion. He married Katharine Askey in about 1899. Walter was a ranchman in Sisterdale, Kendall County, Texas. He enlisted in the Texas Rangers as a LOYALTY RANGER from August 16, 1918 until February 1919. In 1930, he was still living in Kendall County. Walter H. Askey died November 27, 1946, in Bastrop County, Texas. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Smithville, Bastrop County, Texas.

Mr. Virgil M. Atkins of Forrest City, died Sat. June 17, 2006 at the Baptist East Hosital in Memphis. He had been in poor health for the past two years. He was 86 years old.
Services for Mr. Atkins were held at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2006 with burial following in Loughridge Cemetery.
Mr. Atkins was born Oct. 4, 1919, in West Point, Miss., and was the son of Temple Atkins and Tommie Meeks Atkins. He lived most of his life in St. Francis County, was a retired truck driver and inspector for Yale and Town, was a veteran of World War II, was a Baptist, and was chosen Great Grandparents for the State of Arkansas for 2004.
Mr. Atkins married Dorothy Dennis June 13, 1942 in St. Francis County, and she preceded him in death in 2005.
He is survived by three sons: Jerry Wayne Atkins of Marion, Terry Glenn Atkins of Jacksonville, and Eugene Atkins of Jonesboro; one daughter, Julia Atkins of Bryant; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
He had one daughter, Dorothy Yvonne Atkins who preceded him in death in 2005.

Mrs. Dorothy Lucille Atkins, age 81, of Forrest City, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis.
Mrs. Atkins was born March 21, 1924, in Wynne, and was the daughter of Jim Dennis and Girlie Frazier Dennis.
She lived in Forrest City for most of her life, was retired from Sanyo Manufacturing and was a Baptist.
Mrs. Atkins marries Virgil Atkins in 1942 and he survives her along with three sons, Jerry Wayne Atkins of Marion, Terry Glenn Atkins of Jacksonville and Eugene Atkins of Jonesboro; one daughter, Julia 'Judy' Atkins of Bryant; one sister, Jewell Packett of Wynne; four brothers, Bob Dennis and Clarence Dennis, both of Colt, J.C. Dennis of Florida and Marcus Dennis of Wynne; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Y. Atkins earlier this year.
Visitation for Mrs. Atkins will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2005, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005, beginning at 10 a.m. at Stevens Chapel with burial following in Loughridge Cemetery .

Mr. Jerry Wayne Atkins, age 69, of Proctor passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013 in West Memphis after a long illness.
Mr. Atkins was born February 16, 1943 in Texas, the son of Virgil Atkins and Dorothy Dennis Atkins.
He spent his entire life in this area and was a Baptist.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Yvonne Atkins and Judy Atkins.
Mr. Atkins is survived by his wife, Martha Jackson Atkins of the home; two sons, Wayne Atkins and Shannon Atkins both of West Memphis; two brothers, Glen Atkins of Jacksonville and Eugene Atkins of Jonesboro; and six grandchildren.
Visitation with the family will be held Thursday, March 28, 2013 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Morgan Funeral Home.
Graveside services are scheduled for Friday, March 29, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at Loughridge Cemetery in Colt with Bro. William Witcher officiating.

Virgil "Eugene" Atkins, 65, of Jonesboro, Arkansas, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at St. Bernards Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 27, 1949, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late Virgil Mabry Atkins and Dorothy Lucille Dennis Atkins.
He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force. Mr. Eugene worked as an installer and repair person for Southwestern Bell and AT&T. He will be remembered as a loving husband and father.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Atkins; son, Jason Atkins of Marion; a brother and his wife, Terry Glenn and Betty Atkins of Jacksonville; a sister-in-law, Martha Atkins of West Memphis; and his mother-in-law, Margaret Shannon of Jonesboro.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Wayne Atkins; and two sisters, Yvonne Atkins and Judy Atkins.
A celebration of his life was held at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home. Burial was in McDaniel Cemetery.

I cannot be positive but I believe he was the father of my Alfred. I found him in 1860 and 1870 census of Al. Employed by the Mundy Companies for over 43 years, and an active member of the Spring Branch Community Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, James Brownschidel, and her son, John Thomas Hanway, IV. Survivors include her children, Matt Hoffman and wife Becky, Marilyn Sinclair and husband Richard, Debra Ann Brownschidel, Elizabeth Pylant and husband Ronnie, and grandson (adopted son) John Thomas Hanway V and wife Cynthia. Twelve grandchildren and nine Great Grandchildren.

Mary Frances Coffman, age 89, of Elwood, passed away on Monday, April 3, 2023 at her residence following an extended illness.
She was born in Anderson on April 3, 1934, to the late Wilbur and Grace (Carpenter) Austin.
On November 20, 1954, she married A. D. Coffman and they shared more than 51 years of marriage together before his passing in 2005.
Mary was a homemaker and enjoyed taking care of her family and her home. She was a member of Zion Chapel Church. Mary enjoyed attending church, singing, reading her Bible and taking walks with her friends. She also enjoyed going out to eat and having coffee with her friends, including special friend Stan Alvey.
Mary is survived by her loving son, Larry (wife Pam) Coffman of Elwood; brother, Paul (wife Frances) Austin of Muncie; six grandchildren, Kyle Coffman M.D. of Westwood, KS, Jaime Coffman of Elwood, Christian (wife Michelle) Craig of Marion, Amber (husband Shaan) Mahaney of Alexandria, April (husband Josh) West of Muncie, and Kristy (husband Christian) Burguss of Jacksonville, NC; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild on the way; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her father, Wilburt Austin; mother, Grace Austin; husband, A. D. Coffman; daughter, Barbara Coffman; sister, Helen Newland; three brothers, Frank, Herchel, and Harvey Austin; and infant great grandchild, Mahaney.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm on Monday, April 10, 2023, at Dunnichay Funeral Home, 1113 S. Anderson St., Elwood, IN 46036.
Funeral service to celebrate Mary's life will follow the visitation and begin at 1:00 pm at the funeral home with Pastor Rick Craig officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Walk Cemetery in Anderson.

He was born in Anniston, Alabama on 4 Jun 1938. He graduated from Anniston High School and from Howard College (Sanford University) with a B.A. He received a Masters in Theology and a Masters in Counseling, followed by an Advanced Acedemic Degree. He taught history and spanish with the JCBOE for 35 years touching many lives.
He was preceded in death by his parents Shelley and Thelma Austin.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara Sue Roberts Austin; his loving children, David Austin (Michelle), Phyllis Mays (Jim); 5 grandchildren and one great grandchild; brother, Johnny Austin (Paula); sisters, Shirley Jackson (Benny) and Cindy Mills (Nolan); numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
The funeral service was held Friday, 19 Feb 2016 at the funeral home with Rev. Bill McCall and Rev. Randy Kesler officiating. Burial followed at Forest Grove Cemetary.

Barbara Sue Austin, 79, of McCalla, passed away went home to be with her Lord on July 19, 2022. Sue grew up in Concord and graduated from Hueytown High School. She worked for Liberty National Life Insurance Company and retired as Business Coordinator for the Earl Usher Bessemer YMCA. She was a Member of the Baptist Church at McAdory.
Sue was a faithful pastor's wife and devout Christian, serving in many roles in the church, including pianist, Sunday School teacher, choir member, Vacation Bible School, and many more. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Rev, Richard Austin; parents George and Laurine Roberts, and mary Moody; brothers George "Buddy" Roberts and Tom Roberts; and stepsister Karen Carroll. She is survived by her son David Austin (Michelle); daughter Phyllis Mays (Jim); grandchildren Michael Austin (Natalie), Ryan Austin (Lindsey), Kyler Austin (Elizabeth), Joshua mays (Brittany), and Jenna Mays; great grandchildren Kinsley Austin, Conner Austin, Rylan Austin, and Kaden Austin; brother Paul Roberts (Louise); stepsister Janet Burchfield (David); and several nieces and nephews.
The visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Friday, July 22, 2022, at Peoples Chapel Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM at the Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Jake McCall officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Grove Cemetery.
