~~~~~~~~~~~~
Following the German naming custom, the Schaeffer/Schafer sons were all named Johann/John, but were known by their middle names. A Revolutionary War Soldier, Nicholas was the son of Johannes and Maria Eva Sab Schaeffer and brother to Johann Adam Schafer, also in this cemetery. On 20 Apr 1775 in Northumberland County he married Julianna Brosious, daughter of Sebastian and Margaretha Roth Brosius.
The Veterans Affairs Office In Bellefonte lists this grave as being in the Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery.
His [George Alson Shaffer's] grandfather, John Adam Shaffer, was born in Berks county, Penn., October 31, 1752, and did gallant service in the Revolutionary army. He was second lieutenant of a company of Associators, during the campaign of Trenton and Princeton in 1776-77, and was noted for his Herculean fame, being the strongest man in the company.
He came from York county, Penn., with a brother, Nicholas, and settled in Brush Valley about the beginning of the present century, purchasing the interest of Valentine Ertle's in a tract of land one-half mile east of Madisonburg, where he passed his remaining days, his death occurring January 14, 1840.
He was married in York county to Elizabeth Klinefelder, a native of that county, born December 27, 1760. She died in November, 1835, and the remains of both were interred at Madisonburg [Lutheran & Reformed Cemetery]. They had eleven [tombstone says 13] children, of whom the following record is given: John died in Miles township, Centre county; Michael in Walker township, Centre county; George in Indiana; Jacob in Ohio; Adam and Samuel in Pennsylvania; Barbara in Ohio; Catherine in York county, Penn.; Lizzie in Indiana; Eve in Venango county, Penn., and Magdalena in Ohio.
This is part of an article by a Prof. Meyer which was stated to be "a continuation of a few selections from Prof. Meyer's biographical sketches of the first settlers of Brush Valley" ~DMH
"JOHN ADAM SCHAEFFER (Captain) imigrated into Centre county in 1801, and purchased Valentine Ertle's interests in a lease for the tract on which his son John A. Schaeffer now lives - east of Madisonburg half a mile. Part of a barn which he erected in 1804 is still standing and used.
Mr. Schaeffer was a soldier in the Revolutionary war with the rank of Captain. What battles his company was in could not be ascertained. Philip Meyer, also an early settler, had belonged to his company. Captain Schaeffer was a man of Herculean frame and strength, but never abusive. It is said he was the strongest man in his company and Philip Meyer the best wrestler.
He and Nicholas Schaeffer were brothers; was born in Barks (Berks?) county, Oct. 31, 1752, died Jan. 14, 1840, lies buried in the Lutheran and Reformed graveyard at Madisonburg. Children: George; Michael, ex - Sheriff Schaeffer's father; John A., born Nov. 22, 1796; Jacob; Samuel. Some of the older boys were grown to maturity when the family came to the valley. Samuel and John A. are still living; the latter is eighty - five, and gave a number of these items. The daughters are all dead. They were Catharine, Barbara, Lizzie, Eva and Magdalens. The Schaeffers of Madisonburg and vicinity are descendants of Captain John A. Schaeffer. There are some living int Nittany valley, and some in the western States."
~~~~~~~~~~~~
The citizens of the north end of St. Francis county, A. T., celebrated the 58th anniversary of American Independence, at the house of Maj. CHARLES NEELY, on the 4th ins, by giving a barbacue arid ball. At 3 o'clock P. M. the company marched out to an extensive table, spread in a handsome shade, preceded by the ladies, who being seated, the Declaration of Independence was read by GEO. W. STOKES, Esq. who would have delivered an address on the occasion, but for indisposition. The Rev. Mr. BROOKFIELD made a few remarks, and then the company partook of the dinner prepared for the occasion.

After the cloth was removed, the following regular toasts were drank:
>>The Day we celebrate - Sacred to true Americans, and hateful only to nullifiers and tories
>>The President of the United States - In the field against a foreign enemy, or in the cabinet against a domestic foe, alike invincible
>>The Union - May it be preserved, when Burrism, Calhounism, and nullification, are dead and for gotten
>>The United States of America - Governed by the people, the only legitimate sovereign, office seekers and demagogues should be closely watched
>>The Hon. A. H. SEVIER, our Delegate in Congress - He has our entire confidence
>>The Hunters of Arkansas - Ever ready at their country's call, to protect booty and beauty
>>State Government - We are ready and willing as soon as practicable, to set up for ourselves, and assume our own government
>>The Memory of Gen, GEORGE WASHINGTON
>>THO'S JEFFERSON, Author of the Declaration of Independence The true expounder of the constitution of the United States, and the friend of human liberty
>>The State of Kentucky - The oldest of the western states: may she ever maintain, in moral and intellectual force, a high rank in the confederation
>>The Marquis DE LAFAYETTE - The hero of two hemispheres, the coadjutor of Washington in the United States; in all his political course he has shown himself a consistent friend to humanity and constitutional liberty
>>The Citizens of St. Francis county By their industry and honesty, they will become rich and respectable
>>His Excellency JOHN POPE - Chief ploughman of state - he lays his furrows handsomely, and never looks back
>>The American Fair - Industrious, virtuous, handsome, and lovely, far above foreign competition, without the aid of any protective system - may we always know how to appreciate their worth

VOLUNTEERS
>>By Joseph Shaver. Andrew Jackson, our venerable President, and A. H. Sevier, our Delegate in Congress - True and trusty stuff - the more they are rubbed, the brighter they shine
>>By Jonathan Fillingim. His Excellency John Pope, Governor of Arkansas - May his veto on the ten section bill ever endear him to the freemen of Arkansas.
>>By Dan'l Mitchell. Rob't Crittenden - a staunch patriot: those who know him best, love him most
>>By Maj. B. R. Butler, Long life to the President, and success to his fleet, We'll drink and be merry with all friends that we meet
>>By Ajax Tyer. A porcupine saddle, a cobweb pair of unmentionables, and a hard - trotting horse to the enemies of our country
>>By James C. Shaver. M. Van Buren, Vice - President of the United States - He met his political persecutors, and conquered: the people are sovereign - let their will prevail
>>By Harris Johnson. The citizens of Arkansas- We hear much fear expressed on the side or course of the powers that be: may they be on the lookout, and we doubt not that they will change with the administration
>>By Geo. W. Stokes, Esq. The Federal Judiciary of the United States

BATESVILLE GUARD BODY EXHUMED BY ORDER OF COURT
The grave of Neely Shaver who was buried in the Evening Shade cemetery on the 22nd day of January, 1926, was opened by an undertaker and his assistants of Walnut Ridge Sunday. This action was in obedience to an order of court in Lawrence county.

After raising the casket out of the grave, it was opened and the stomach removed from the body. This was sealed in an air tight glass jar to be taken to chemist for analysis. The casket and body were then re - interred.

Mr. Shaver died January 19, 1926 in Lawrence county, after a very short illness. His physician pronounced his ailment acute indigestion or ptomaine poisoning. No foul play was suspected until it was learned that parties related to him had collected several thousand dollars in life insurance. Still later when one of these parties was arrested charged with poisoning another man in that county, it was determined to investigate the death of Neely Shaver. He left his widow and one daughter who reside in Pine Bluff, one son. in Jonesboro, and one Sweet Home. He was an uncle of L. H. and O. C. Shaver and others of Evening Shade. The result of the analysis of the stomach and contents will be awaited with much interest.

On 23 June 1850, Martha Elizabeth Shaver (fifth child of Jacob and Thurza) married to Andrew
Jackson "Jack" Tucker (son of Robert Tucker and Sarah Pelphrey).

In 1852, Martha Elizabeth and her husband Jack Tucker headed to California. He reportedly deserted
her en route or was forced to leave the wagon train for mistreating her. She gave birth to a son, Alfred
Lafayette ("Lafe") in Green River, Utah Territory (now in Sweetwater County, Wyoming) in July of that
year, and proceeded on to California. She married in California in 1856 to James Ervin Burnham, a
miner, and settled in Calaveras County (in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, not far from where the
Gold Rush began just a few years earlier). She was joined in California soon afterwards (probably in
1856 or 1857) by her brother John P. Shaver (Jacob and Thurza's seventh child), who also tried his hand
at mining.
