Far-removed relationship to Dennis Morgan Hydrick: 1st cousin 5 times removed's wife's cousin's son-in-law

Ira was my grandfather. His father died five months before the son was born. His mother was Elizabeth Ann Catherine Mitchell and he had two brothers: Francis (who died young) and Clinton Levert.

He was the son of Ira Ellis McMillion (I) (b. 1799) who died in Blount Co., AL in Sept. 1853. He had two brothers: Francis (1850-1853) and Clinton Levert (1842-1920). He had 7 confirmed children. There is no proof he had a child named Francis Oliver.

In some newspaper articles, he is referred to as "Col.", but that was most likely in connection with the social organizations with which he was associated. I have found no evidence, nor are there any family stories, that suggest he ever served in the military.

Obituary
Col. Ira McMillian died at his home in Prescott last night about 11 o'clock. The deceased was one of the oldest citizens of Prescott and had been identified with many of the best business interests here. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. R. H. Wheeler of Fort Worth, Texas, Mrs. O. J. Cantley of this city, and Miss Brice McMillion of Fort Worth, Texas and two younger children. The remains will be interred this afternoon at De Ann Cemetery. The services will be conducted by Rev. W. M. Hayes.

The delivery was described as "very hard" with the labor lasting several hours. Bess had had no serious illness or accident prior to this.

On April 29, 1926 she was admitted to Abilene State Hospital (an epileptic colony) through the County Court in Tarrant Co., Texas by her sister, Kate Wheeler, 1501 6th Ave., Fort Worth, TX. The records state that she was known to be good-natured, obedient, and kind and very religious, reading the Bible frequently. The record states she was a Methodist. Alexander McGowan McWilliams was born 1747 in Browndodd, County Antrim, Ireland. He was the son of Samuel McWilliams Sr.(1725-1823) and Mary Gordon (1724-1838). The McWilliams family left Wiggtown, Scotland about 1720 due to the religious wars taking place during that era. They come from a long and proud line of Scots Highlanders.

The Alexander McGowan McWilliams family (along with the Robert "Patrick" McGowan family) sailed from the Port of Belfast Ireland to the port of Charleston, SC in the fall of 1800 aboard the ship "Sallie". His brother Samuel McWilliams Jr. was also aboard. Robert "Patrick" McGowan d.29 April 1801 "one day out to sea from port of Charleston, SC".

They were all joining other members of the Whiteford, Nichols, Hunter, McGowan and McWilliams families who had arrived in SC about 1790 and had settled along Cane Creek near the Saluda River about 5 miles north of the Laurens-Newberry District line.

The Alexander McGowan McWilliams & wife Jane Millar family settled at Mudlick Creek, Abbeville District (now Newberry Co.), SC and resided there until the death of Alexander McGowan McWilliams (Will written 30 March 1813- entered into Probate 4 April 1813). At the time of his death his living children were: John Gordon b. 1780 d. 1866 GA,David Reid b. abt 1783 - d. 1860 SC, Andrew b. 1786 - d. 1859 GA, James Robert b. 1794 - d. 1864 TX,and daughters Jane McWilliams McGowan b. 1794 - d. 1874 SC and Mary McWilliams Wallace b. 1797-d. 1869 Ohio. Daughter Esther McWilliams b. 1797 - d. 1850 GA was then married to William Crawford who was also an executor of that will; witnessed by John Wiseman & Andrew Hunter.

Several of the McWilliams, McGowan & Crawford families settled at Cross Hill, Laurens Co., SC.

After the death of A. M. McWilliams most of his married sons daughters and families moved over to today's DeKalb Co., GA in 1828 and then later down to Middle GA & Texas.

They were hardworking and successful farmers.

A special "Thank you" to Myra Singleton Johnson for her detailed research on the McWilliams/Crawford family.

Parents Alexander McGowan McWilliams (1759 Co. Antrim, Ireland -d. 1813 SC) & Jane Miller with their children were "loyal Scots" whose grandparents had moved from Argylshire, Scotland to Browndodd, Lairne, Co. Antrim, Ireland after 1720.

AE McWilliams was married to Sarah Ann McGowan 1808 @ Abbeville District, SC. They moved first to DeKalb Co., GA in 1828 and then to near"Flat Shoals", Meriwether Co., GA in 1832 with oldest eight of "seven sons/two daus." and built a home & farm.

Andrew E. McWilliams died 1859 (his will) and was buried on the family property near Gay, GA. Sarah A. McGowan McWilliams continued to live at the family homestead until her own death in 1876. Both AE & Sarah A. McGowan McWilliams are buried in the private McWilliams Family Cemetery located on that land. No stones now exist. This property stayed within family ownership until 1987.

Parents to 7 sons, 2 daughters:
William Gordon McWilliams (1808 SC-1895 AL)
Mary Gordon McWilliams Elam (1810 SC-aft. 1880 Fannin Co.,TX)

Samuel Brown McWilliams (1833-1920 GA)

Both the extended families of McGowan & McWilliams of Argylshire, Scotland & County Antrim, Ireland descend from the Clans of Scotland ("Clan Records of Scotland"). These two families were well interrelated prior to SC arrival 1801.

General Notes: Husband - Squire Wesley Alonzo Scoggins

First name is Squire on Find A Grave (possibly a title?)

What is the difference between a lord and a squire?
The head of this family was often the Lord of the Manor and called "the squire." Lords of the Manor held the rank of Esquire by prescription. Squires were gentlemen with a coat of arms and were often related to peers.

Fred and Robert, I want to share with you both some information I have uncovered on Mary Alice (Medlock) Scoggins Hydrick, my gg-grandmother. Currently in Find A Grave, we have two entries that seem to be for her:

Edgemont Cemetery (Anniston) (FAG 191512634). The FAG entry is for "Mary Alice Medlock Hydrick." The notes on this entry begin with "unsure of cemetery."
Her second husband Andrew Jackson "Jack" Hydrick (FAG 207347053) in buried at Coldwater Baptist Church cemetery. Her first husband Squire Alonzo Scoggins, 1860 - 1888 (FAG 207347785) (my gg-grandfather) is buried in Forsyth County, Georgia.

His grave marker reads "Beloved Father, farewell. He was just and upright in all his ways." In 1860 census was in Gwinnett County, GA listed as a farmer. By 1891, family had moved to Talladega County, AL where he purchased 40 acres (NW 1/4 Section, Township 17, Range 6) from Jennifer Iron Company. Sold land February 5, 1897 to John WIlson for $237.75 (Talladega County Record Book Volume VV, Page 555). William had received $200 from the death of his aunt Sarah Bagwell in February 1888.
